Well sure the Newtown, Connecticut shootings were tragic. But not tragic enough to stop a gun show from taking place forty miles away.

Courtesy of Think Progress:

Connecticut residents are outraged that a gun show will take place this weekend just 40 miles from Newtown, where 26 people were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School just weeks ago. The East Coast Firearms Show is being advertised as the “best of the best of vendors, offering 250 tables of antique and historical arms.”

Local lawmakers say they wish the event had been cancelled, as had been similar shows across the state. “It seems insensitive to have the event continue,” Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia told local reporters.

Since the shooting, several Connecticut newspapers have also apologized for publishing advertisements for a gun show next to articles about the tragedy.

Jesus, what is wrong with these people?

Are they so determined to add to their arsenal of penis extenders that they simply cannot postpone this damn thing for a year or two. Or how about altogether?

Apparently a number of others DID cancel their shows, but not these douchebags.

I sincerely hope that part of the legislation that Congress brings forth after Joe Biden does his thing, is legislation that places SERIOUS restrictions on what kind of weapons can be sold at these shows, and insists that EVERY potential customer undergoes a comprehensive background check before being able to purchase that special "Welcome to the Man Club" peashooter.

We have some pretty fucked up Americans in this country and the Connecticut State Legislature needs to do something about theirs!

This all her kittens back to the similar outrage the right Expressed over the so-called Ground Zero mosque.

40 miles is still relatively healthy distance way. Well I'm not a big fan of guns in general a gun shows in particular, I also feel this is a little bit of the hypocrisy. In fact Jon Stewart Daily Show had an excellent segment on it drinking rights outrage over the Ground Zero mosque. If I still had internet access from anything other than my phone, I would pull up the link to the video and link it here for you. It's still holds true today.

  3. Just in case you missed it, the sign says at the "Children under 12 free".

That ought to be a boon to the families of surviving siblings of the Sandy Hook Elementary martyrs.

While these children's died tragic, senseless deaths, they are not, by definition, martyrs.

I know I'll get slammed for this, but antique and collectibles doesn't equate, in my mind, to offering assault weapons at bargain prices to anyone who strolls through the door. My sorrow does not give me the right to prohibit another from engaging in any legal activity. I doubt anyone is going to step up and reimburse all those involved in the show, including motel owners, restaurants, gas stations, etc., if the show were cancelled. It's all fine and dandy to say this show should be cancelled "out of respect" when you haven't anything invested in it. How many miles away does one have to go and how long does one have to wait to avoid being labeled an insensitive douchebag, anyway?

I'm not a teabagger, a republican, a fundamentalist, a troll, or a palin sympathizer. I've been reading Gryph for years. Not that that will matter much right now. I'd say "fire away" but that might get me labeled as a, well, you know.

    1. Those are some good points that you mentioned.

There's not a real protocol set in stone that demands cancelling the event. But, if they did show some empathy to people of the area who experienced the recent local tragedy by having a ban on selling the Bushmaster assault rifle(s) used to kill the kids and teachers, and ALSO promised to go the extra step to do background checks to every purchaser with no exceptions.

If my kid died from gun violence, I'd probably go to every gun show in the country and walk around with a sign around my beck proclaiming my child's death. And maybe autopsy photos -- if I could stand to see them.

A positive step in trying to assess mental illness and it's connection to mass murder.

Well, I applaud all the douchebags who DID cancel, it's a small step in the right direction. How that one that stayed open can justify it is beyond me.

It's going to be difficult, but I'm confident that something will be done to address gun control. The President keeps his word.

I think that a law should be enacted that, in order to own an assault rifle, one must take a trip to the shooting range and have Former Vice President Dick Cheyney (R) teach them the fine art of "aiming".

It's a win win on both sides! He's a macho real American Patriotic Republican. And it would redeem his image with the Democrats!

Insensitive? Gun-show people? Really? You're surprised?

Seems to me as though the fine people of Stamford need to elect a Mayor that's a little bit smarter, a little more aware of what's going on around him.

It's called money people. Most of these gun show vendors travel around the country to sell almost exclusively at gun shows. This is where they make their money. And in regards their clientele - this is a great season for gun sales; paranoia is rampant and the President and Congress are talking about gun control measures (for real this time) - so sales are looking up! It's going to be a good year for them.

McConnell: Debt And Spending, Not Guns, Are First Priority

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Sunday that despite the White House's push to quickly enact a new round of gun laws, tackling spending and debt will be the top priority for the next three months.

"Clearly, we will not be addressing that issue early because spending and debt are gonna dominate the first three months," McConnell said on CBS' "Face the Nation." He added that when Vice President Joe Biden's task force on gun laws sends recommendations to Congress, they will take a look at them.

The White House reportedly wants to pass new gun laws immediately, with Biden saying legislation will pass by "the end of January."

Freshman Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) said Sunday that she did not support the gun control measures, detailed Sunday in the Washington Post, that the Obama administration is hoping to push through Congress.

“I don’t think that proposal necessarily fit the bill for me,” she said on CNN's "State of the Union."

In a separate appearance on ABC's "This Week," Heitkamp called the plans "way in extreme."

“I think you need to put everything on the table, but what I hear from the administration – and if the Washington Post is to be believed – that’s way, way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about. And it’s not going to pass," she said.

Heitkamp, who hails from a red state, is a member of the National Rifle Association and has an 'A' rating from the group.
