Having Facebook friends from the Bible Belt can be very eye opening, and a little sad.

This is not from my Facebook account, fortunately I don't have anybody quite this nutty, but it apparently has shown up on numerous other Facebook accounts and I have received it in e-mails multiple times.

I don't even know where to begin with something like this, but it does raise the question as to how a religion dedicated to the teachings by a man identified as the "Prince of Peace," could also embrace gun ownership so aggressively?

It's beyond me how these two items even belong in the same homes. Frankly, the lack of real education that enables people to think this even makes sense portends nothing good for our society.

These people know nothing of "The Prince Of Peace," they are stuck in the Old Testament.

I'm telling you Gryphen; America is done for.

    Move. Now.

You will make twice what you make in AK in places like Australia, NZ, UK, Canada. Your views will be normal as opposed to one sane flicker of light in the midst of an ocean of stupidity, the water swirling ever higher and more angrily, reaching to extinguish all the flickers of light above their heads.

Our Christians are nothing like Christ.

That's either from the Midwest or the South. It is also one of the stupidest things I have ever seen.

When someone posted a picture of President Obama made to look like Hitler, I blasted them as hard as I could - after waiting to see if anyone else did.

When no one did, I slammed them so hard their head is probably STILL spinning. Then I told them all that they were just as bad for not taking umbrage at the posting and closed my Facebook page.

Ignorance: It's what's for breakfast in the South!

And somehow the irony escapes the users of both.

Life in the Bible Belt is not fun if you aren't a fundie...A coworker at my first job after moving to Arkansas did ~3K worth of damage to my car because it had an Obama sticker on it.

Fortunately, he decided to be stupid and do this when I was at work, so there were cameras that caught him in the act.

I've stayed in the closet pretty much since then, though.

In answer to your question, too many pseudo-Christian fundamentalists in this country have long ago abandoned the New Testament in favor of their own peculiar version of the Old. Somewhere they forgot that the rending of the temple curtain when Christ died (New Testament) signified the end of the Old and the beginning of the New. These people may like to call themselves "Christian" but they are not.

I have 5 or 6 cousins, 2nd cousins, uncles etc who are right wingers (tea baggers?) and friends of mine on facebook. 3 of them liked to post provocative crap on my timeline and hijack my liberal posts. our relationships have become strained to say the least as we lambast one another. none of them live near me and i see them seldom. i finally figured out about 2 weeks ago how to keep them from posting on my timeline, having their posts showing up on my timeline, and having them see my posts -- all without them knowing it and without having to unfriend them (which would start WWIII in this nutty family). finally i some peace. unfortunately, when someone pushes my buttons i respond so not even seeing this stuff has substantially de-stressed my life.

Linda, take it from someone who has been there - and currently still is.

You are wasting your time with family that is so bad that they won't tolerate your dissension. Politely tell them off and wait. Those with intelligence (usually the younger generations) will come around.

Trying to avoid the stresses you are describing is NOT worth it.

And by the way, did you complain to FB about what they were doing?

Mississippi boy here. I was in school early 90's.
We had a shooting club and an in-school comparative religions class.
So the picture is stupid, as well as whoever posted it.

Mississippi boy. I have a question:

You say your school offered comparative religions class. Did it include all five major religions to include Hinduism and Buddhism, or did it confine itself to the three paternalistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam? If it indeed covered all five, I am impressed with the speed of devolution since then.

The National Rifle Association is rolling out what it calls “the big guns” this week to push back on the growing call for gun control.

Conservative commentator Oliver North, rocker Ted Nugent, NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre, NRA President David Keene and 2012 Olympic gold medal skeet shooter Kim Rhode will all take to the airwaves for what the NRA is calling a “#Gunversation” on The Sportsman Channel, a digital-tier cable channel focused on the outdoors.

The prominent gun rights voices will be appearing on NRANEWS Cam & Co., a show sponsored by the NRA. Some have criticized the NRA for relying on men like Nugent and LaPierre — who are often politically divisive — to make their case. Nevertheless, the men continue to be heralded in the gun rights community.

“Host Cam Edwards will sit down with some of the most powerful, outspoken and talented individuals in the industry for an entire week of no-holds-barred intelligent and insightful discussions,” read a release from the NRA.

The NRA’s #Gunversation comes as Congress plans to pick up the pace on gun control legislation, holding Senate hearings on a so-called assault weapons ban Wednesday and a possible committee vote on gun control legislation Thursday.

The NRA has been focused on firing up its grassroots base since the push for gun control began after the massacre in Newtown, Conn., and this week’s #Gunversation seems to be part of that effort.

Here’s a preview of the week posted to the Sportsman Channel website:

Police in Sebring, Florida say a man told them that his dog accidentally shot him in the leg with a gun that he thought was unloaded.

Gregory Dale Lanier of Frostproof was riding in his truck on Feb. 23 when the dog knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor of the truck, causing it to discharge into the man’s leg, a police report indicated.

“Sebring Police Cmdr. Steve Carr said police did not arrest the dog or detain the animal, pending the investigation,” according to Highlands Today. The police spokesperson said this was the first case of “dog shoots man” than he had ever come across.

The 35-year-old shooting victim had insisted to police that he believed no bullets were in the gun.

Lanier was traveling on State Road 17 North “when his dog kicked his unloaded .380 pistol causing it to fire and the bullet struck his leg. Lanier said he heard boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg,” the police report said.

The man told police that he was shocked to find out that the gun was loaded and that it was a 9mm pistol, instead of a .380 handgun.

    MS B to fromthediagonal:

Yeah. All 5 plus a few weeks on various cults, Wicca, Druids, as well as possible 'inspirations' like Gilgamesh and Egyptian religions.
The class was only a semester and I think it was only taught once per year.

But, it seems I went to a fairly good public school.
In a small, very conservative town, but the school was something the community was proud of.
I imagine now the flat earthers have taken over the school board.

Thank you, MS B... I am sure that semester taught you critical thinking and widened your outlook upon all kinds of philosophies and traditions.
I wonder how your class mates think now.
I am sure some were interested in learning more, while others became frightened of that open horizon.
The question is whether those who feared that openness stayed home where is was undemanding and comfortable, while the learners who saw and liked the openness went on to new adventures.
Did they feel insecure in their decisions thus facilitating a roll back in curriculum?

It does not sound like you have looked back, and that is probably for the best. But I wonder how these swings of the pendulum happen...
