“Here is the problem in Illinois,” he said on the House floor. “I love you folks in Chicago. You’re the ones that have the problem, you have a runaway gun problem. Don’t blame the rest of us. This isn’t about Democrats, it’s not about Republicans. It’s because Chicago wants a warm fuzzy. ‘Let’s pass a bill that will eliminate assault rifles.’ Last year there were more people killed with hammers than with assault rifles.”
“Here’s an analogy folks, I ask you to think of this. You folks in Chicago want me to get castrated because you’re families are having too many kids. It spells out exactly what is happening here. You want us to get rid of guns.”
What have I been saying?
Essentially the reason that men fight so damn hard to hang onto their guns is because they have become the substitute for their manhood.
They are afraid that if you take away their guns you make them vulnerable and impotent, and that frightens them to death.
Look let me say this, I live in Alaska where there are actual wild animals no more than a quarter of a mile from me at any given time and I completely understand the desire to have a weapon to even up the odds. (I don't carry one, but then I am Alaskan born and raised.) But if you own a gun, or a bunch of guns, because you feel frightened of your government, or because it makes you feel like man, then you have a serious problem and, in my opinion, should absolutely NOT have access to weapons of any kind.
In other words if your manhood is something metal that you put into a holster, then simply put there is NOTHING manly about you.
Gryphen, well stated. I have always felt that some Gun Nuts actually have an orgasm when they get a new gun. How many guns and high capacity magazines must one own to protect his or her family? More victims are killed by over zealous family members than any one else.
ReplyDeleteFrom data compiled in the field and analyzed under (ahem) rigid testing conditions, metal phallic enhancers are cold and often less stimulating than the real thing.
ReplyDeleteSorry, Baggers. Guns don't make up for your (ahem) inadequacy.
They don't realize that. They just get a bigger gun. And a bigger, faster car. And truck. And snow mobile (I should say "machine.") motor boats that make alot of noise.
DeleteYessss!
ReplyDeleteFinally, finally!
No more debate as to the symbology of guns!
It is now a matter of record straight from the House of Representatives of the Great State of Illinois:
"... Chicago, you want a warm fuzzy...
and you want me to get castrated..."
(as the spittle is flying from the old fool's lips!)
This made my day!
It made my day, too. Nice post, G. Good catch on the piece at Raw Story.
DeleteAnd hammers don't kill more people than guns.
ReplyDeleteNo, but hammers do drive more nails into boards than guns do. And they damage the thumbnails of those who shouldn't be doing carpentry. But whoever made up the shit about the lethality of hammers should have their tongue nailed to a fence. Maybe just for a day so they can think about it. Just a simple exercise for self-reflection and self improvement.
Deletewhen dogs play with hammers, no one dies
Deletekeep pushing the liberal anti gun issue and watch all the democrat gains disappear in 2014 and 2016. im not kidding. and im not a repub.
ReplyDeleteGuns are not a partisan issue. They're a safety issue. Anyone who votes for a party strictly because of an imaginary gun control issue is going to vote for that party anyway, and they will not change their mind because they are unable to open their mind to begin with in order to learn the facts.
DeleteI'm not a Dem or an Rep, but I am a gun owner and I'd like to see background checks on any new gun owner, and reported transfers on private sales. All of my guns have been registered each time I purchased them, and they are in a database. If I have one stolen, all of my guns will likely be stolen together because they are in a gun safe. Having the serial numbers will possibly help me get them back, rather than having to collect from my insurance company and then face higher insurance premiums.
I'm not against CCL, but proper training and liability insurance should accompany a concealed carrier. And concealled means concealed, not flashing or using as a threat.
You're not a repub? No Democrat would call them 'democrat gains.' We know the proper term is 'democratic gains.' The right uses 'democrat' incorrectly as a slur. Nice try. 62% of AMERICANS want more registration and fewer guns on the streets.
Delete8:47, I agree with you - to a certain extent. However, what 6:58 is saying is valid. If the growing sentiment to ban assault weapons is accompanied by extreme statements such as banning ALL firearms - and that argument IS growing in use - then any allies we currently have in the fight to ban assault weapons will get weaker because the opposition can successfully use that as an argument against the ban by claiming the ultimate goal is disarming.
DeleteAt the very least it will reduce the ability of those who agree with us to get that desired ban and that is going to be tough enough without the extremist arguments. (DON'T ask me why. Common sense will tell you there is absolutely no use for them except slaughter, but you can't change people's emotions or preconceived ideas. Kind of like religion, right?)
Excellent comments (6:58pm, 8:47pm, 4:42am) to the issue at hand. But damn folks, can we get away from the dogmatic, infantile comparison of guns (and trucks/boats, etc.) to penises? Holy crap, it takes away the strength of our arguement and subjugates it to playground-level taunting!
DeleteWait a minute, can we go back to that part about castrating the little fellow?
ReplyDeleteI must admit that it's rare to see the opposite misuse of "your" and "you're"...
ReplyDelete"You folks in Chicago want me to get castrated because you’re families are having too many kids"
Every day we hear another Republican from somewhere say something that is simply outrageous. How can they all be so ignorant and so uncaring about the people they are supposed to be working for? From state legislatures to Congress, there does not seem to be a single Republican who is willing to put the good of the country above the good of the NRA, Grover Norquist or the Koch Brothers. They have all become zombie advocates of a mythical evil empire. And they even have begun to all look the part as well.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
You misunderstand.
DeleteThey are NOT ignorant or uncaring about the people they work for because the people they REALLY work for are the rich, the powerful and the corporations.
They take very good care of those people and will gladly sacrifice the safety and well-being of the poor fools in the other 99% who put them in office in order to protect that 1%.
A huge AMEN to 2:14!!!!!!!!
DeleteWhy thank you, Leland! :)
DeleteHeh...
ReplyDeleteHere is your point proven for you in a nice colourful map.

{as a side note, when I told my best friend about this, the first thing she quipped out with was about the American fascination with guns :O }
I agree with your sentiment, Gryphen, but I only heard "castration" which involves testicles. I didn't hear anything about penises. I know, moot point.
ReplyDeleteI am assuming that this jackass has either not seen the reports or refuses to accept them, about the problem Chicago is having coming from firearms sold OUTSIDE of Chicago and brought in in violation of Chicago law?
ReplyDeleteTrue, there is a huge problem in that area!
DeleteAgain with the pesky facts????
DeleteDo NOT ruin a good GOP/NRA talking point with those annoying facts and statistics!
Oh, Darn, 2:16. I'm sorry! What was I THINKING??????
DeleteNot to worry, Leland.
DeleteJust be sure to check your Right Wing Nut Job Talking Points Handbook before you post next time.
I believe this particular topic should be listed under the chapter entitled "Stupid (and Easily Proven False) Comments About The Gates of Hell (AKA Chicago) Where that Kenyan, Muzzlimm, Soshalist, White House Usurper Used to Live"
Sir, no one is going to come to your door and beat you senseless, chop your balls off, rape your wife, put your kids in forced labor camps, and then just for good measure take your guns away too.
ReplyDelete"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" means that the American people will have the right to keep and carry arms (guns) as a way to provide security to a free state by way of a militia.
Some argue that we have our own militia (navy, army, marines, air force, natinoal guard, coast guard), but a lot of arguments against that are citing precedence from Colombia vs Heller where the courts stated a person could own a firearm outside of service in the militia. The amendment refers not just to the early days of our country before we created the military branches, but also when our country was literally the united states of America-- as in each state would need its own form of protection. Nowadays we have militia that protects ALL states, and each state has a National Guard that protects individual states. We also have local law enforcement agencies. The idea that a bunch of civilians have the right to form their own militia with no regulation concerning training, safety, etc, is not only laughable but actually kind of terrifying. They have no authority, they are vigilantes-- lynch mobs.
The argument that one needs a gun because as civilians they have the right to protect their state is defunct. It no longer stands to reason.
The idea that someone has the right to protect their own property? I agree with that, although I believe there are better ways of doing it--the simplest being: ever heard of locking your doors? I've constantly been told that a lock only stops an honest thief, and that's true, although getting around the lock would definitely be more trouble for them than just turning the knob. But nowadays we have home alarm systems, deadbolts, hell even mechanical pull-down shielding for your windows if you're that paranoid (it's like a solid steel garage door closing over windows, sliding glass doors, etc). Spend some money for an attack dog trained in Germany, they're only a few thousand dollars. Much cheaper than stockpiling bullets and assault weapons and pistols with the little laser pointers at the end because you're a shitty shot.
"But what if the intruder has a gun and shoots my dog and steals my stuff?"
ReplyDeleteHow about that $50+ per month you spend on home insurance? I know, I know, has no one ever thought of that? That maybe their life is worth more than their possessions? Shocking, I know, in today's material world, but maybe if you feel that scared that you'll get hurt you shouldn't provoke someone. Because guess what? That intruder is breaking the law. It's not like s/he won't eventually get punished (today's world of instant gratification as well, wow).
Like Stephen King said: if you need 30 bullets to hit and kill the person threatening you and your family you are a worse shot than everyone in any action movie ever made. You're going to cause more damage to your stuff than the intruder if you're popping them off like that.
And why would you want to use bullets, anyway? It's so Old Testament-- caught stealing, chop off your hand. Caught sneaking into my house? DIE!! Maybe a paintball gun so the cops know to look for the dumbass running around blind with blue paint all over him? Potato gun so you can still hurt him? Either way you can still enjoy watching him be sentenced in the courtroom and can rest peacefully knowing that he's become some prison dude's sock puppet, because punishment that is greater than the crime is what it's all about, right? Otherwise you would't be so trigger-happy you'd shoot some poor fuck turning around in your driveway.
Have we really become such a nation of pussies that half of us feel we are in such danger? Are our egos and self-importance so inflated that we feel the need to carry a weapon capable of killing someone using one finger around with us everywhere we go? Sure, the Boy Scouts say "always be prepared" but ... seriously?
No one NEEDS an assault weapon unless they plan to assault someone (or group of someones). No one NEEDS a pistol. In the name of tradition, why should any gun not used for hunting be allowed? (And to those who are going to argue that shotguns should be banned too-- My only concern about that would be whether the meat industry would take unfair advantage of no one being able to get their own deer.... of course, I suppose they could use arrows...? I've never thought it was fair sport to kill a deer from a mile away unless you were desperately in need of the food.)
And now my novella is over. Sorry for writing so much!
you want to shoot deer with shotguns?
DeleteGun Condoms! Wrap them rascals! fewer guns, fewer gun fetishists... race you to the patent office!
ReplyDeleteWould you put a sign in your yard that reads "my home is gun free"? Maybe automakers should build cars that only do the speed limit. Cars do have a mind of their own and do kill people, doesn't anyone watch transformers? They're real, they're on TV! We better take away fat and sugar, those rascals are out to get you. You can't control how many twinkles (rip) you eat. People's decisions kill people, not guns, cars, food. FBI statistics show areas introduced with concealed carry have a drop in violent crime. This is a fact. Remember, police show up after the crime is committed.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually sorry you're feeling in that way. I am hoping you're
