It is well past time for this to change.

I have known people that have gotten married on a whim, due to pregnancy, and because their parents arranged it when they were young. So the idea that somebody in a committed relationship spanning decades cannot have the protections, and privileges, provided all of us by marriage in this country makes a joke of this phrase from out Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

Of course I don't attach much credence to the "endowed by their creator" nonsense, but I am certainly down with the rest. And believe that if one of us has these rights, then ALL of us should have these rights.

    Hell, Gryphen, they don't believe it when we point out the EIGHT different forms of marriage listed in the Bible! Why should this be any different?

    If the DO accept the statement about the number of marriage types, they simply explain it away as them having "matured" in their thinking and ignore it. (This generally from those who say the Bible MUST be accepted as a whole and NEVER changes!)

    Face it. Some people will NEVER be convinced and most certainly WON'T accept it!

    I am NOT one of those! My brother has been married three times because he can't keep his pecker in his pants. I have LGBT friends who have been in committed relationships for over 20 years, just as you depict. It's just sad.

    But we are making progress.

    Oh, and I am assuming that you meant to write "attach" in your last paragraph instead of "attack"?

    It is truly sad but that cartoon is spot on. Happily married people have no problem with same sex marriage...it is a stupid argument made by the same miserable people that hate anyone elses happiness. It is long overdue like most civil rights and only strengthens this countries families, whatever they may look like. You know the loudest voices of hate are miserable in their lives.

    The majority of "traditional" people I know have been married an average of twice, with some working on their third, fourth, or "just looking around now." Most were married the first time "in haste" (cough) because Mom and Dad demanded it for appearance's sake, and there was no further discussion, rationalization or "choice." All have kids who are products of the varied spouses, and of course, there are those little things called "alimony" and "child support" that just keep piling up for all the participants. Very few had the patience to stick around and try to work things out--and in some cases, there was eventual abuse. Marriage basically became a revolving door with no regard to the fallout.

    Two friends are still in marriages that are hanging on "for the sake of the kids," with Mom or Dad cruising for one-night stands to "get back" at their partner. Their families are miserable. Two others are in long-lasting unions and are able to work their problems out when they arise.

    Oh, and did I mention that the group with the most marriage issues consider themselves ultra-devout, church-goin' Christians?

    Meanwhile...the gay couples I know have been in loving relationships lasting 20+ or 30+ years, through thick and thin, no matter what. They're leading happy, fulfilled lives and have left their "cruising" days long behind them. Mr. Knishes and I hold them up as examples of what our own relationship strives to be.

    Waiting for the day when Rill 'Murika takes off their blinders, but I think I'll be waiting a long, long time.

      Having been raised in a family that was "broken" several times, I can say from personal experience that staying together "for the sake of the kids" is DEFINITELY A BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!

      Took lots of therapy to get my head straight enough to realize I was NOT the one at fault!

    I've been married to the same man for 25 years, and we "Dated" (lived together) five years before tying the knot. We have friends working on their third and fourth marriages or "happily divorced/single".
    And gay marriage didn't effect anyone's marriage, heck, you could hold up any gay couple who's waited decades for equality as examples of the perfect marriage compared to straights.
    My take is that gay marriage only strengthens everyone else's marriages because they get married for all the right reasons.
