Tonight is the night of the Academy awards, or as my daughter says "The best night of the whole year!"
I thought since she will be calling me all night to yell about her favorite movies not getting the Oscar I would provide all of you a similar venue to express your confusions, frustrations, or joy at the winners.
Here is the list of nominees for those of who are not movie addicts like my daughter and I.
1. Best picture: "Amour," "Argo," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Les Misérables," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook," "Zero Dark Thirty."
2. Actor: Bradley Cooper, "Silver Linings Playbook"; Daniel Day-Lewis, "Lincoln"; Hugh Jackman, "Les Misérables"; Joaquin Phoenix, "The Master"; Denzel Washington, "Flight."
3. Actress: Jessica Chastain, "Zero Dark Thirty"; Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook"; Emmanuelle Riva, "Amour"; Quvenzhané Wallis, "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; Naomi Watts, "The Impossible."
4. Supporting actor: Alan Arkin, "Argo"; Robert De Niro, "Silver Linings Playbook"; Philip Seymour Hoffman, "The Master"; Tommy Lee Jones, "Lincoln"; Christoph Waltz, "Django Unchained."
5. Supporting actress: Amy Adams, "The Master"; Sally Field, "Lincoln"; Anne Hathaway, "Les Misérables"; Helen Hunt, "The Sessions"; Jacki Weaver, "Silver Linings Playbook."
6. Directing: Michael Haneke, "Amour"; Benh Zeitlin, "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; Ang Lee, "Life of Pi"; Steven Spielberg, "Lincoln"; David O. Russell, "Silver Linings Playbook." (There are more nominees at the link,)
I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I have only seen a few of these movies, since my usual movie fare involves car chases, things that go bum pin the night, and superheroes.
However I have seen "Lincoln," "Les Miserables," and "Life of Pi" so I am not completely in the dark.
Since I have seen so few I really cannot make much of a prediction as to who might, or might not, win.
But I will say that for Best Picture Lincoln" has set a ridiculously high bar for others to reach in order to take that prize away from Spielberg.
So go ahead put on your best party dress. open that special bottle of champagne, and let's enjoy a night of star studded movie magic.
Wait, is Seth MacFarlane really the host?
Oh well forget the champagne and party dress, I think a bottle of room temperature Miller Lite and comfy pajamas will suffice.
Let the festivities begin!
Update: Jennifer Lawrence on her way to receive her best actress Oscar.
Don't worry she recovered well.
This young woman is going to be a huge star in the very near future.
I don't have a party dress so Levis will have to suffice.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Seth is the host, and I can only say I hope it gets better. It's pretty bad so far.
I would so do Seth McFarlane. Sadly, he wouldn't do me.
ReplyDeleteIts the oscar night

Christoph Waltz Oscar: Best Supporting Actor
The year's Oscars quotes included many a zinger, but perhaps none more controversial than host Seth MacFarlane's Chris Brown and Rihanna joke.
ReplyDeleteMacFarlane called "Django Unchained" "unspeakably violent," then quipped, "Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie." The reference to Brown's 2009 assault of Rihanna drew gasps from the audience in Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. Rihanna and Brown are now once again an item.
I couldn't believe they were offended by that. Yeah, in five years, when Rihanna is dead and Chris Brown is arrested all these same people are going to tsk and wonder thy Rhianna stayed with him so long. He's a pig and she's an idiot and all those people, like Adele, who are working with him are assholes and hypocrites.
Deletethe most controversial joke was the Lincoln one. I thought it was pretty funny, but apparently I'm all alone.
Deletehe's not the first to joke about a tragedy 150 years later.
In the classic “Casino Night” episode of “The Office,” lead character Michael Scott revealed that jokes about Abraham Lincoln’s assassination just recently became acceptable.
“I need to see this play like I need a hole in the head,” cracked Steve Carell’s character.
People need to lighten up. It's not half as bad as all the Hurricane Katrina jokes and the 911 jokes that are still out there.
I love the glamour of the red carpet!
ReplyDeleteHi Gryphen! It's good to see that you are relaxing and enjoying watching the Oscars; I chose not to. The reason why is that "Argo" is heavily favoured to pick up many awards. I respect Mr. Affleck's directorial debut detailing the Iranian hostage crisis, which took place 33 years ago. I personally have not seen the film; the one major detail that was omitted was the efforts of the Canadian ambassador, Ken Taylor, and the staff of the Canadian Embassy in Tehran, who sheltered six American hostages, and at great risk to themselves, helped get them out of the country using Canadian diplomatic cover. This was a MAJOR omission on the part of the producers; their excuse was "there wasn't enough time to focus on getting EVERY detail in the movie". BULLSHIT!! This is a HUGE insult to those that were involved, and a HUGE insult to Canadians! I just hope that if any awards are won, Mr. Affleck and the producers acknowledge the important role of Ambassador Taylor and his staff. If they do not, I will have lost ALL respect for American cinema as we know it!
ReplyDeleteIt's annoying that Jessica Chastain and Kathryn Bigelow are going to get snubs because of the movie's portrayal of torture, in an honest way that reflects reality, but a ridiculous slave revenge fantasy and Argo are like to win big honors despite the controversies with their films.! I didn't see Zero Dark Thirty but it seemed like an excellent movie and both the direction and the acting were spectacular.
DeleteActually, the Canadian ambassador was recognized for the contribution that the embassy staff made in hiding and helping the Americans escape. Yes, there was a bit too much emphasis on the CIA operative who worked with them on the escape, but the Canadians were recognized and definitely in the ending credits. As a Canadian born person who now holds dual citizenship, I was proud of all who worked to get these embassy employees home safely. I liked the movie. Sorry you chose not to watch but felt okay to make comments without seeing the movie and credits.
Delete1smartcanerican - I do feel MUCH better this morning, after seeing the highlights from last night. I am proud that Mr. Affleck's film got the Best Picture nod, and that he gave much-deserved credit to the efforts of Ambassador Taylor and the embassy staff in his acceptance speech! When the film was debuted last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, many people, including the family of John Sheardown, who passed away not long afterwards, felt slighted by the omission - Mr. Sheardown was the chef-de- mission at the Canadian Embassy in Tehran at the time of the crisis. However, I am very happy that Mr. Affleck acknowledged their contribution in his speech. I DO plan to go see the movie now, and I now have a new-found respect for Mr. Affleck, whose cinematic credentials have been cemented by this win!
DeleteI watched a Benh Zeitlin (the director) interview on Colbert (as I recall) along with some scenes. It looked fascinating, and that is the only one I know anything about...truthfully the only one I would like to see. I think I've seen him acting somewhere, but googling him didn't reveal anything. Why do I think he did something on the tv series Buffy? He's a pretty young guy and would have fit right in there. Anybody know?
ReplyDeleteBenh was the director of Beasts of the Southern Wild. Guess I should have added that.
DeleteBenh went to college with one of my kids...so I'm rooting for him tonight. The movie is beautiful and moving.
DeleteI don't know about the connection with Buffy...but Joss Whedon went to the same college (Wesleyan in CT)so there may be a link there.
I'm rootin' for Lincoln, but in the meantime...SOCK PUPPET RE-ENACTMENTS!!! (Big grin.)
ReplyDeleteOkay that Les Miserable cast is amazing!
ReplyDeleteWow...Anne Hathaway has an amazing voice, and she's smokin hot too.
ReplyDeleteFinally saw " Lincoln" last night after seeing Django Unchained last weekend. It's hard to make a judgement based on only seeing 2 films nominated for Oscars, but both of these were great films in their own genre. I couldn't believe the tension in the Lincoln movie as Jan 31st of 1865 got closer and closer. I'll leave the plot spoiler out for those who aren't constitutional scholars or history buffs. But I knew the outcome, and still was spellbound. Great pic.
ReplyDeleteSo was Django. This one will be in my DVD collection as soon as it is released. Pure Quentin Tarantino. Christopher Waltz was great, and so were Jamie Foxx and Leo DiCaprio. Samuel L Jackson is so damn well cast in his part. I want to go ba k and see it again right now.
I'm with you, Gryphen. The cast of Les Mis gave me goosebumps!
ReplyDeleteI saw Silver Linings Playbook last month and absolutely loved the movie even though I wasn't so sure after the first 15 minutes or so of it. Lincoln was a fantastic movie and I'm rooting for it, too.
ReplyDeleteI've had copies of all the nominated movies and those of the best actor noms for weeks. I'd planned to see them all in the past month, but the only one I had time for was Lincoln. I didn't think it was that hot, haunted as it was by Ken Burns' superlative work.
ReplyDeleteI'm giving the night a miss (I'm going to watch a winner from the Independent Spirit Awards) but I'll be sure to tune in tomorrow night for Fashion Police. I might even laugh at Joan Rivers.
Definitely on the Les Mis cast...really beautiful. Ann Hathaway was beautiful and gracious.
ReplyDeleteSomeone told me she would not see Les
DeleteMis because the actors are not famous for their singing so she"knew they would ruin it". Again I think F U to that person condemning the performances ignorant of even Hugh Jackman's Tony awards in musical theater.
Yay, Anne Hathaway wins! Nice speech, especially the last line: no more Fantines in real life.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I only saw Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook but both of those movies were awesome. Silver Linings Playbook is about 100 times better than it seems in the preview.
ReplyDeleteSilver Linings Playbook was filmed in my area and the whole place is really excited! But, I think /Les Miz will win Best Pic.
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with Renee Zellwiger? She looks loaded, or like she just got drops in here eyes.
ReplyDeletethere have been rumors she is an alcoholic
DeleteShe doesn't seem to be aging well. I think all that intense dieting she did after Bridget Jones' Diary didn't help her appearances. She looked alarmingly skinny in Chicago, especially whenever Catherine Zeta Jones was on screen beside her. She looks stressed.
DeleteAgh, I can never make it to the end of these things. G'nite all. Hope your faves win.

The First Lady is introducing the Best Picture nominees?
ReplyDeleteOh get ready for the Right Wing outrage to reach epic heights tomorrow!
The first Lady was wonderful and looked stunning. I was elated she spoke of the relevancy of the arts. Michelle O as a presenter... Great idea!
DeleteI was moved that Striesand performed to honor Marvin Hamlish. The singers gave great performances.
Super Oscar show tonight!
I hope they do .... I hope their hate and jealously causes all their heads to explode leaving mountains of jelly-like jealousy matter all over themselves!
ReplyDeleteLoved that FLOTUS was involved in the Best Picture category :) That should make the t'pers crazy!
ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama was stunning!
ReplyDeleteBest Oscar presentation: Michelle Obama and didn't she look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSorry Gryphen I hate to dirty up this thread with talk of the Wasilla hillbillies...but I just saw this picture of the Toad with his....SNICKER....SNORT....trophy from the Irondog!
ReplyDeleteCreepyJr posted it on his Fakebook tonight!
Someone please tell me why the Toad looks like a tee baller who got his dinky ass trophy for "Participation"!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...oh and Krusty is going nutso in the Wallow/Baldy thread!
Here's the pic of the little wittle Toady! LOL!

PS...Loved the First Lady tonight! That is ONE classy LADY! Eat your heart out Baldy...nevermind Baldy...just EAT...you half dead looking hag! LOL!!
By the way that is Hugh Jackman running up to help Jennifer Lawrence after she stumbled .
ReplyDeleteWolverine's got your back Katniss.
The Oscars did a memorial segment to actors/actresses that have passed and failed to mention Andy Griffith.
ReplyDeleteJennifer Lawrence tripped on her gown and fell up the stairs.
Kristen Stewart is on crutches, but ditched them to limp across the stage with a mannequin.
Renee Zellweger was 3 sheets to the wind.
and OBAMA was there!!
Sally Field was a good sport to do the skit in the green room with McFarlane making passes at her.
ReplyDeleteDespite Seth having to "Disney" it up so the squares wouldn't have shitfits, the overall production was one of the better ones in memory.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone had good sound on their TVs, to fully enjoy Bassey, Hudson, Adele, and all the others who belted out songs in a mindblowing manner.
My only critical comment is over the super lame "song" at the end. You had to hold your nostrils shut for THAT stinker!
That fall was so unfortunate. You can tell it just rattled her and upset her. Nice that Meryl Streep pretended to be tripping on her dress as well right after, to take some pressure off JLaw. JLaw is already a big star.
ReplyDeleteI freaking love Jennifer Lawrence. She's so open. When they interviewed her on the red carpet she said she hadn't had a chance to eat anything all day because her family was at her house and it was chaos while she was getting ready- they mentioned twelve courses for the Governor's and she perked up and said, "there's food inside?" and was visibly disappointed when she found it was at the party and said, "oh no, that's so long!" Totally cracked me up. But I didn't watch the whole thing so missed her fall and the First Lady's appearance.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed the show but I wish they would simply eliminate the first fifteen minutes and the nonsense at the very end. The humor always falls flat and it simply wastes time. Recipients should be allotted a few more seconds to make their speeches. It seemed rude that they were cut off so obviously.
ReplyDeleteWe were thrilled that "Searching for Sugarman" won for Best Documentary. It was the opening film at last summer's Traverse City Film Festival (Michael Moore's annual event here).
There really were a lot of simply beautiful gowns this year and luscious colors. The actress who should have been using her crutches on stage, though, should have opted for a gown with something over the shoulders. She was in dire danger of popping out of her gown after the show when she had her crutches. She also looked miserable on stage - must have been in pain.
It was such a delightful surprise that the First Lady named the Best Picture award. Michelle Obama looked absolutely gorgeous in the White House following the Governors Dinner there. I know that the First Family are real movie buffs. In the Jimmy Fallon interview she mentioned that the whole family had read "The Life of Pi" and had seen the film and she had a White House event for high school hopeful movie makers based on "Beasts of the Southern Wild."
Ben Affleck (? spelling) was an absolute jerk in his fifteen seconds of accepting the award. He came off as bitter, mean and immature. It was enough to make me wish another movie, any movie, had won the award.
And poor Jennifer Lawrence. The look on her face in the post-awards interview when some idiot asked her if she wasn't concerned that she had "peaked" too early in her career. She's only 22.
All in all, a very interesting evening with an amazing variety of awards after a season of some truly super movies.
Beaglemom
Gryph, you have GOT to see "Beasts of the Southern Wild." I thought it was stunning. It's deep, loaded with symbolism and imagery of the hardscrabble Louisiana folk, without romanticizing them.
ReplyDeleteBut that's just my humble opinion.
