Today's example of a man with an arsenal of weapons making death threats comes to you courtesy of Detroit, Michigan.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

A convicted felon and alleged neo-Nazi amassed 40,000 rounds of ammunition and planned to kill black and Jewish community leaders in Detroit as part of a “hit list,” WXYZ-TV reported on Thursday.

Federal authorities said this week that a search of 47-year-old federal suspect Richard Schmidt’s home revealed the list and apparent plans to kill Scott Kaufman, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, and Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

“You have to realize it is the world we live in,” said Kaufman after being notified of the list. “There are people who don’t like us and would just as soon have us not exist, but you can’t dwell on it.”

According to NBC News, Schmidt was indicted in January 2013 on federal charges of possessing firearms, ammunition and body armor, all of which violated his parole. Schmidt was released from prison in 2003, after 13 years of incarceration in Ohio following a homicide conviction for shooting and killing a man during a traffic stop. Schmidt also wounded two others during that attack.

Investigators then found 18 weapons inside Schmidt’s home in Ohio in December 2012, including various types of shotguns and high-caliber rifles, including two different AR-15 assault weapons.

U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach, who represents Ohio’s northern district, said investigators have concluded that Schmidt acquired his arsenal at gun shows or via private firearms sales, which currently do not require a background check.

Someone tell me again how background checks are unnecessary and infringe on a citizen's 2nd Amendments rights? I NEVER tire of hearing that one.

By the way in response those who complain that I never post any stories of regular Americans protecting their homes from criminals with their guns, let me provide you with this shinning example from Holt, Michigan:

When deputies arrived at a house here for a reported home invasion, the suspected intruder was lying just inside the front door, handcuffed, with multiple bullet wounds to his torso.

There you have it. A man breaks into a woman's house to rob her and she fill him full of lead just like our pioneer forebears woulda done. See? Dammit sometimes a woman NEEDS a gun handy when bad guys show up unexpectedly.

Wait, there seems to be more to the story.

The likely reason for the home invasion: 57 marijuana plants of varying size growing in the basement, Wriggelsworth said.

"That person went there because he knew what was going on (in the house)," the sheriff said.

Oooohhh!  Apparently the woman, and her man, had been selling drugs out of the house for some time, and had attracted a rather unsavory element to the neighborhood.

So not so much a case of an innocent woman at home protecting her family, and more an episode of "Breaking Bad: Before the Meth."

Well, in defense of Detroit (we lived for over 30 years in a Detroit suburb and I worked in downtown Detroit for over 13 years), this man, Richard Schmidt) lived in northern Ohio and threatened the leaders in the Detroit Area Jewish and African-American communities. Thus, the story comes by way of Ohio, not Detroit. My hope is that this guy is never out of prison again.

You're being awfully hard on this douchebag, Gryphen.

Sure, he's despicable, but won't you at least acknowledge his impressive preparedness (40 THOUSAND rounds, that's thousands with a 't'), restraint (ok, some blacks and Jews, but ZERO Catholics, Muslims, Hindus, Zoarastrians, Creoles, Apache or Rotarians...) and ambition (yeah, I'm just assuming the guy's ambitious. I could be wrong on this one)?

With so many people drifting thru life without a plan, at least this guy had a plan. And that deserves some respect. Hopefully he has a Plan B: lengthy prison sentence.

After reading Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Life, he had to find a purpose he could really get behind.

      "that's thousands with a 't'"
as opposed to 'shousands' or 'chousands'???

      Please catch me up.

Spot on Beldar, I do believe this dude is ambitious. There's thousands like him (that's thousands with a "T") who'd write a multi paged single spaced double sided manifesto, and let it go at that. This dude's putting his money where his mouth is- if that ain't ambition, I don't know what is!

Growing Number Of Gunmakers Threaten To Boycott States That Pass Gun Laws

A growing number of firearm firms in the US are vowing to reverse-boycott local and state governments that enact any new infringements on the Second Amendment.
Vowing to close what they're calling "the police loophole," at least 50 US companies, ranging from gun machinists to gun shops, are now saying publicly they'll refuse to sell weapons and gear to police in places where governments have banned the use of the same gear by civilians.
Quality Arms, located in Rigby, Idaho, writes on its website that it "will not supply any firearm or product manufactured by us or any other company, nor will we warranty, repair, alter or modify a firearm owned by any state, county or municipality that infringes on the right of its citizens to bear arms under the 2nd Amendment."

Hhhmmm. Sounds to me as though that would just make it easier to control certain firearms.

First, with decent maintenance, any properly made firearm is going to last decades, which is far longer than these fool companies can survive without the sales. And it is quite easy to train as a gun smith, so every police department could have one.

Second, you know damned good and well that there is ALWAYS someone willing to "go around" refusals by people like this if there is a buck to be made.

Third, I would be willing to bet that a major portion of those who make this statement are the ones who are flooding the market with these assault weapons and/or their over-sized magazines.

Fourth, as a gun owner myself, I say screw 'em. Let them refuse! We NEED the control on these weapons.

Police and other law enforcement agencies could always use the guns and ammo confiscated from these idiots.

As a resident of NY State, which was the first to be targeted by these companies because of our new gun laws, I say good riddance!

I'm sorry if I seem unreasonable, but I don't want my neighbors having access to assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and missile launchers when they're not even responsible enough to prevent their dog from attacking everyone on the block or secure their backyard furniture in a wind storm.

The pot protector chick kind of overdid it. She shot him multiple times in the torso, then handcuffed him? See? The anti drug folks were right! Mary Jane is the gateway drug to kinky handgun violence!
