Rachel Maddow reports that Richard Nixon prolonged the Vietnam War for political purposes.

As a progressive I am not at all surprised to have it reaffirmed that the Republicans have been killing Americans for political gain for decades.

I only wonder why so many of my fellow citizens are so damn slow in figuring it out as well?

Meanwhile, the "assault weapon" ban goes down in flames and apparently so does expanded background checks.

Watched this last night. Rachel strikes again! Pretty awful, and LBJ called it "treason" at the time.

To answer your last paragraph, it's actually rather simple. EMBARRASSING, but simple.

They don't WANT to know. Why? because if they admit something like THAT, then they have to admit that everything else they believe may be wrong and in need of re-examination. And their entire house of cards will collapse.

Republicans have always been devious. I remember reading that Reagan and the Republicans delayed the release of the Iranian hostages till after the election. I know there are crooked politicians in both parties but it seems the majority of them are in the GOP.

I think the obstructionism coming from the GOP is treasonous. I'm so relieved Obama got re-elected.

I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care......

Before President Obama took office, people had a difficult time believing that the leaders in DC would deliberately lie to them, especially about war. Now they think everything President Obama says is a lie. They have an easy time believing THAT. He is a democratic politician, and he is black. Repub. voters are so gullible, it really is an embarrassment to the country. People overseas are appalled. My family members in the UK saw through W right away, how dumb he was. They see Fox, and are shocked at the lack of respect for President Obama. Racism is alive and well in the good ol' US of A. Treating a decent man like this, when W/Cheney were respected is a black eye on this country. Most people KNEW the Iraq war was wrong, a way for Cheney to gain control of the oil. Plus get lucrative no bid contracts for Halliburton, which STILL paid him a stipend each year.I hope W and Cheney live long, shameful lives, heartless bastards.

Well, a small consolation is that they can never leave the country for fear of being arrested for war crimes.

I think I'll say this in Amy Poehler's or Seth Myer's voice from Weekend Update: "Really, I mean really?"

Who the hell would be surprised by this? I mean really.

Ain't no thing our Government or its elected officials do that can surprise me anymore. It's bad, it's all bad and it's only getting worse.

I detest the Republicans and their brand nationwide. And, sincerely hope as many as possible are voted out of office in their next election cycles. We need to move heavily to the Democratic side no doubt about it. There is nothing the Repubs are for that benefit anyone, anywhere! Plus, they are horrible obstructionists, detest our wonderful half black/half white President and spew nothing but trash and lies!

Agree. Never in my life will I vote for a republican because of how they have acted since the 2008 election. Not that I would have again anyway because of GWB. I hope I'm in the majority (of sane people) that will never forget.

I remember in 1968 that it seemed terribly unpatriotic of Nixon to know how to end the war and not share it. Thank you for posting this.

And then he got himself elected, was the president for four years, and then ...

And then he pulled the exact same shit in 1972! "Elect me to end the war. "

And KKKARL Rove was working with CREEP.

A dying veteran’s letter to George W Bush and Dick Cheney

I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.

You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.

Like how democrats have exploited marriage equality for political purposes? One's opinion on something like that doesn't miraculously change "overnight."

Funny how more democrats are coming out in support of it in the SECOND TERM of a democratic presidency.

As far as I know, 4:24, loving another person has not resulted in millions killed and maimed. In fact, if Republicans were one iota the Christians they claim to be, they would not be getting us into wars at all, let alone keeping us involved for decades (why are we STILL in S. Korea?)

We thought we'd never have a Vietnam War again and here we are ten years later. I LOVE President Obama but why ARE we still over there and in Afghanistan? Bring the troops home NOW!

My brother served in Vietnam for two years, although not in a combat venue, but I watched my Dad drink industrial strength Mylanta every day he was gone.

Seems to me that the GOP used the same tactics with the hostages in Iran just before the elections in 1980.

My now deceased father was a dyed in the wool Republican, and it was THAT election that turned him Democrat until the day he died. I could almost hear his voice while watching Rachel's clip. He used to say that there was something shady going on, something big that Nixon didn't tell us. Neither he nor I felt it was the Watergate incident and I wish he could have learned the rest story before he died. He was a WW 2 veteran with the allied forces in eastern Europe and a few of his friends lost kids during the Viet Nam War.

Rachel hit another home run with her commentary. We deserve to know the truth so history doesn't repeat itself. If we learned from the Viet Nam war, perhaps we could have dodged what Cheyney Bush and their band of evildoers did to us , Iraq and the Middle East.

Yes, and the Republicans planned to invade Iraq as early as 9/11-- which is odd, because Iraq did not attack us on 9/11. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi's, our good friends.

"I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power.

I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done.

You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole. "

I was horrified to learn recently (thanks to Oliver Stone's "Untold History of the US") that the Japanese were dying to surrender, in 1945, and only asked for ONE thing, to not have their beloved leader hanged by the Allies.

But Truman, a DEMOCRAT(!), wanted to show the Russians his new toy, so mass murdered tens of thousands of civilians, for no other reason.

The fact that they let Hirohito live after all that, makes it even more of an evil deed.

But, horrifically, it turns out that every U.S. president since that time, is guilty of similar acts of insanity (granted, the Republicans who succeeded Truman, were the worst.)

If its not for some infantile personal agenda (like Reagan's fantasy of a "Star Wars" outer space defense system, which resulted in the collapse of the arms reduction treaties the world was on the verge of getting)

--then its due to a weak man pressured by corporate interests to go against all the morals of America, and invade other countries with nothing in the way of provocation, like both spineless Bush's.
