Rumors swirl that Elizabeth Hasselbeck has been fired from The View. Ostensibly because she is "too extreme and right wing."

Courtesy of US Weekly:

The people have spoken. Elisabeth Hasselbeck, one of the five cohorts of ABC's daytime talk show The View, will not be returning to the couch next season, following hot on the footsteps of fellow cohost Joy Behar, a source tells Us Weekly.

According to the source, the show's resident conservative voice is being ousted after market research revealed that she isn't popular with TV audiences.

"The viewers they polled all said she was too extreme and right wing," the insider tells Us. "People did not watch the show because of Elisabeth. So they told her yesterday her contract would not be renewed."

When reached for comment, a rep for the show told Us in a statement: "Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract."

I put off posting this yesterday because I was not sure how legitimate it was. Especially in light of that statement from the rep.

However since this first story it has been picked by all kinds of blogs and news sites, all of who are treating it as a serious news story.

On TV Newser they even claim to have to independent sources who confirm Hasselbeck's removal from the show.

If true this would seem to be just the latest example of the dreaded Palin curse at work.

Or. perhaps, just another in a long string of bizarre coincidences. You decide.

She is just plain "obnoxious"! Of course she will play victim and claim b/c she is a rw the libril media, yadda, yadda, yadda.

She is so flippin' obnoxious. And what exactly is her claim to fame? Survivor?

Whatever! She is an actual voice of reason on that show. That show is filled with dreamers of hopey change that aren't realistic about what we are facing. Now I will give you she does get a bit "too much" but hell so does Whoopi (I love her) Joy, and everyone else that is sucking at the Obama teet. We are being lied to people and it is time we realize it and do what is right. Get off your stupid high horse and see that you cannot redistribute wealth, you cannot tax your way out of problems, and you cannot run everything against out Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Oh and how about the fact that the DEMOCRATS are shutting him down at every turn? What does that say?

I don't know---I don't think they should fire her. When you silence other people's point of view---even a wingnut-- you have lulled people who have the opposite point of view into a false sense of what the world is.
There are people like Elizabeth everywhere. I want to know where they are so I can see them coming. If she is fired, are they going to get another conservative? They should. Whoopie is pretty libertarian, Behar was uber liberal, Sherry is a socially conservative democrat and Elizabeth was most assuredly conservative but she could be openminded on some things--like sexuality. Barbara just sucks the toes of any guest that is there so she doesn't count.

It has very little to do with points of view, it has to do with market share and a gradually dwindling audience. The channel did the research and it showed she was a liability. Out she goes.

      Angela,@ 4:20am:
I'm glad I didn't read all of the comments because you're expressed my opinion in your first couple of lines that we're better off being exposed to ideas different than our own because it makes us more mindful and thoughtful., etc--- all the things that we really want to exhibit on a personal level with others. Liz might be the wrong fanny in the seat to be that voice. There's a balancing act between quality of content and ratings, and when ratings is the only priority that drives the content, we've proven that we will cause a fender bender rubbernecking at a wreck on the other side of the highway too otten, metaphorically speaking, and that's just not healthy. Count me as one of the worst here, so I know Intimately that which I crititcize. It's just not our nature to seek differing viewpoints unless there's an upside with some entertainment factor involved.

Angela, I agree with your observations about the other co-hosts and can see where Elizabeth would contribute to a diverse panel, but on the other hand...

...it can be kind of like trying to find solutions to the climate change problem but you can't move forward because the guy who believes Adam and Eve co-existed with dinosaurs keeps voting it down. I see Elizabeth's removal as a response to viewers who are no longer willing to put up with such a level of discourse.

Water seeks its own level, and Teabaggers and old, white men will always be happy with Fox-level television programming. It's nice to see that young housewives and mothers are demanding more intelligent viewing.

    5. Fantastic comment, and I agree with your analysis.

She could be civil on a (very) few points, but - over the years she got bolder, and bolder and bolder with her talking points. I stopped watching 2 years ago. Don't forget, Barbara's politics also run to the right.

The thing is, I believe Elizabeth will be scooped-up by her initial Bible-beating mentor, Mark Burnett - possibly for a reality show.

She'll be the his new reality TV star. Won't that chap Sarah's saggy ass?!?

I agree that it makes for better television to have differing points of view, but they should be reasonable and intelligent. EH was not very bright, but always willing to share her narrow-minded ideas with little to back them up beyond the usual right wing talking points.

It would be great for them to find an intelligent co-host who can represent the more conservative point of view without alienating a good percentage of their audience.

Then again, finding an intelligent conservative seems to be nearly impossible these days and this is not, after all, a political show anyway.

lol,She IS the reason I don't watch that show - for about 6 years now. When the kids were little and I was home every morning I would watch. Hasselbeck is/was intolerable to me. Who TF is she anyway? Big deal she was on Survivor or something and then gets to be a talk show host?
    Buhbye.
Rosie was great - love her or hate her, she introduced the anomalies of 9/11 official story to a broader audience but OOOPS can't have THAT so they canned her.
I won't watch the show anymore unless an extreme liberal, critically thinking potstirrer joins, which is unlikely.
I guess the Quiverful moms that Hasselbeck WOULD appeal to are too busy homeschoolin their small town of biological kids or too damn tired to watch her on tv lol!

She should have been fired a long time ago. Her views are moronic and childish and have little substance. You can have a commentator who is showing the other side of the coin, but not one who uses fear, lies and distortions of the truth to "prove" their point.

I don't watch the show because of her (well, and because I think Barbara needs to retire; she ceased being a journalist long ago.) Still, this surprises me, because she was handpicked by Geddes, and reprtedly, his favorite. I have already seen comments on HP insisting that if she was fired, it's becuase she 'is a beautiful conservative woman, and that drives ugly liberals crazy.' Right.

She is too right wing, but it is also the fact that she is really stupid and her arguments are stupid. She also has a tendency to try to talk over anyone who disagrees with her. Also all her whining about her kids and her husband are irritating. I say good riddance. Barbara needs to retire too.

As to Joy, she has had 2 shows of her own and is now in the works for another one.

Elizabeth is a wingnut that conservatives should be glad to see gone from the show. Her vociferous, high-speed, uninformed/misinformed screeching made her a parody of right wingers - certainly not someone a rational conservative would have chosen to present a conservative point of view. She is a typical Palinite - completely devoid of any rational (and possibly persuasive) arguments. I always suspected that her looks and her air-headed parroting of right wing propaganda made her a near-perfect choice to demean wingnuts by example while being stupid enough to happily play right along. The perfect Blonde joke.

I'm surprised that The View's potential viewing audience would grow by removing Elizabeth, even if viewers who tuned in "didn't like" her. If she's gotten worse and more polarizing over the 9 years, it makes sense to possibly make a change. I wonder if it's really Lizzie who has gotten worse over time and now-former viewers have 'just had enough' and tuned out.

It seems that a show titled The View will have diverse pinions featured from the panel. Maybe the audience is tred of the format or of hearing how Liz expresses those views. If that's the case, I hope that her replacement will still represent a conservative viewpoint, but have a more mature outlook and engage with the others in a respectful, adult manner. No it won't cause most people to switch to a republican mindset or a libertarian set of personal values, but it might yield a better understanding of how those with a completely different set of values sifts through information, data, what and why they filter things, etc.

I think most of us have learned the effects of living in an echo chamber by some groups that are isolated from a good portion of the viewpoints of others who are more open to diverse ideas and diversity in general. We don't benefit by doing the same thing,

But there is nothing more endearing (IMO) than to see people with a different view listen and learn from one another, with the (it's cliche, but applicableintros objective of listening to and learning from a viewpoint of the other as a bigger priority than a person 'getting their say' in a matter. Ok, time for the cliche- "People don't really care how much you know, until they know how much you care." Once they 'know' you, the rules change.

I have mixed feelings about this entire conversation. I used to watch (record) the View everyday, but that was at least a year ago...it is easier to watch when you can zoom past the stupid krap or guests. I really hate the term conservative....these days it simply means Faux viewer, stupid, greedy..evil or Teabagger. If you watch MSNBC, Micheal Steele, Steve Schmidt or Nicole Wallace aren't stupid...they have a different point of view and still recognize reality. Elisabeth is a dumbshit that belongs on Faux...she has nothing valuable to contribute on anything. I agree Babs has run her course but simply knows everyone personally.
My fav has always been Whoopi, no matter where she is and Joy is always smart on the facts...Sheri is just Sheri. For the "View" to work..you need SMART people that discuss the facts, not all the religious krap that is their answer for everything. It seems everyone there except for Elisabeth has a full working life outside the View..so Faux looking for a Palin wannabe seems a perfect fit. It will be interesting to see how they replace the 2, but chances are I still won't watch.

I don't why she is leaving, but if it is because she's too conservative, that's fine with me! I disagree that they need another conservative to replace her, out of fairness. Conservatives already outnumber the Left on t.v., and the radio. That is part of the reason why so many people in this country, are so paranoid, and uninformed. The less right-wingers, the better! The show is already too heavily slanted to the right, anyway. The only true progressive voice on the show, was Joy Behar, and she is leaving, too.

It's probably time for them to just cancel "The View" altogether.

They're losing someone that brings in viewers. That is going to impact their ratings.

So there is no way they're going to keep someone that is an anchor dragging their ratings down by alienating viewers.

If people don't tune in because of her, no matter what their reasons are, she's gone.

The bottom line is money. Ratings is money. Ratings gets you advertisers. Without advertisers you don't get any money.

I dont' think it's because she's too conservative. I think it's because she's too much an ideologue. There conservatives I disagree with but seem to struggle with the same facts that I struggle with, and I find them interesting to listen to. I don't think a female James Carville would have done any better. Sheri is pretty conservative on some things, but she's not an ideologue, and she listens, or at least doesn't pontificate from a soapbox. I like Sheri even though she has some flaky ideas. Elisabeth was just a mouthpiece without much heart or soul.
