Texas school worker shot during school sponsored conceal carry training.

Courtesy of the LA Times:

A Texas school worker shot in the leg during a school-sponsored concealed handgun training class has been released from the hospital, officials said.

The maintenance worker, identified by KLTV as Glen Geddie, was released from East Texas Medical Center in Tyler on Thursday morning, according to Rebecca Berkley, a spokeswoman for the hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Van Independent School District told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday that she could not confirm whether Geddie was the individual injured in the shooting. Police in Van, about 80 miles east of Dallas, referred questions to the district. Geddie could not be reached at the hospital or at home.

The school district released a statement to The Times confirming that at the end of the concealed handgun class Wednesday, a “certified student” had “stayed for private instruction with the instructor and had a mechanical malfunction with his weapon. With the assistance of the instructor, the malfunction was addressed, but the gun misfired and the bullet ricocheted coming back to strike the VISD [Van Independent School District] employee in the left leg. The VISD employee was attended to at the scene and transferred to Tyler for further treatment. The injury is not life-threatening or disabling.”

Texas state law allows teachers who have concealed handgun permits to carry weapons in public school classrooms if they have permission from the superintendent.

Last month, the Van school board, which serves more than 2,000 students, made it the second district in Texas to allow guns on campus, authorizing certain school employees to carry guns on school property, at school events and at school board meetings.

Van superintendent Don Dunn told KLTV at the time that the district offered the handgun classes to employees to better protect students.

Yes I am sure that those students feel safer already knowing that they are surrounded by a bunch of amateur gunslingers. I am usually no a proponent of home schooling, but under these circumstances  I think I would be willing to rethink my position.

The more guns in the school, the more shootings there will be.

What about the teachers who flip out during class and start throwing chairs? What will happen if they are armed? What about the teachers who sexually molest or bully students? Are they really the sort of people you'd want to be sitting there with guns? For every good teacher there is a bad teacher who is on their last nerve...My teachers were allowed to paddle us, and some of them seemed to glory in it. They would use any little thing as an excuse to attack. Of course, some teachers didn't paddle and they didn't seem to have as much "trouble" with the kids as the ones who did. Odd, isn't it?

And what about the suicidal kid whose parents do NOT need their penis extensions in their bedrooms? Now every teacher in school has a weapon he can use to take his life? My God. The GOP is freakin' nuts.

My ex husband and I were sep for about 3 years before we got divorced. We have four children. One from a previous relationship but he was the only father she knew.
My husband filed, gave me all the children, took bimonthly visitation and gave me a few thousand a month in child support. See, Gryph, my husband was addicted to internet porn and each child had seen porn and some of his own father's personal videos. The week before our first hearing, my oldest daughter was having some problems with the divorce because she wasn't mentioned in the filings because my ex decided that since she wasn't biologically his, he didn't want anything to do with her, although he had been her dad for 13 years. I called my insurance company (the one that my husband was the policy owner of) and they told me where to go for counseling. This was just a day before the 1st hearing when I went to this "counseling" and ended up in a psych ward. I don't take any medications and live a very holistic lifestyle, my husband notified the hospital prior to my arrival that I am trying to kill myself because I am diabetic and refuse to take meds. The next day was my court date and the hospital wouldn't let me leave. I threw a huge fit which made my situation worse. My husband knew where I was and went to court and told the judge that I admitted myself to a psych ward trying to kill myself.
    I lost my kids.
I won a false imprisonment suit against the hospital. In the next few weeks, the judge reinstated all my rights to my children. we went into mediation and now he wanted joint custody. He had found a girlfriend wanted my husband to not pay me a dime in child support, meaning more $ for her. Two months before our final, my lawyer quit because she went to a christian university and could "deal with all the porn".
I did get the porn evidence admitted into evidence and my ex admitted to all the porn and told Christian judge that he was "forgiven" and he wouldn't do it.
My husband told him I am an atheist.
The judge told us that he didn't like either one of us, but that since my husband lived in the school district where my children lived (while I was in that hospital for a week and the judge gave him the children, he moved them 30 miles to the east toward Tyler to Liberty City to live across the street from his new girlfriend. Our children had been attending Longview schools for a year, and he ripped them out.
I lost my job due to this mess, I was living on child support and some work from home, so I lost my home because I couldn't pay for it.
Now, I have weekends and extended visitations with my 3 youngest children. The judge said I could file to get my children back if I moved to the school district because he doesn't want the kids changing schools anymore. See, when we were married, my husband would move almost every year. He would get fired for sexting on the internet or on his work phone, or for sharing naked pics with employees, etc. It was disgusting and embarrassing. The school district is about 300 kids. This town doesn't even have a zip code. they only have 2-bed apts for rent and I don't qualify. PLUS, because I have one son and two daughters, the state says I have to have a 3 bedroom house. I begged the court to let me move them back to oklahoma where my family lives. So, I am homeless. I have a decent car because my boyfriend bought it for me. I can only fight for my kids back to move to Texas.
They have a history or social studies teacher who made the kids write essays on the "Legacy of George W. Bush" and it had to be "positive".
This Conservative Christian Methodist Judge ALLOWED my children to live with this pervert.
I am trying to save up for a new lawyer. But I have nothing. I work in Dallas, drive back and forth to OK. I can fit everything I own into my car.
These little redneck schools are going to end up killing our kids with their gun obsession.

I'd like to say this was unfuckingbelievable----but it isn't. How many people have been shot the last few weeks under the guidance of "trained" professionals where there was no crazed gunman trying to massacre a few hundred people? These parents are crazy to let armed anyone be in the schools with their kids.

I would NEVER let my child go to a school that had guns. It just means that more people will be killed and more children caught in the crossfire.

The National Rifle Association is trying to get more minorities on its side in the fight against new gun laws after the massacre in Newtown, Conn., The Blaze reported. The NRA on Friday put of the first of what the site reported will be a "series of diverse commentators that will be making their voices heard on NRANews.com."

Below is the first NRA video from Colion Noir, a self-described “urban gun enthusiast."

I bet if i took a picture of a long line of black and Hispanic people lined up to get guns that NRA would change their tune in a hurry. I know becasue they ahve already done it in the past. the gentleman in the video doesn't know his history. the civil rights movement was non-violent and people faced the water cannons and dogs without guns.

Wonder what will be said when one of these teachers snaps and starts showering the school with bullets?

Where are the insurance companies on this?

I hope the man who was shot sues the hell out of this district.

If I were the insurance company, I'd make the district pay through the nose on a hefty rider, or better yet refuse to insure them.

And talk about stupid! It certainly looks as though the woman depicted in the above picture has her finger either IN the trigger housing or damned close to it, which is essentially the same thing from a safety point of view.

Group survival of North Florida to teach children and adults to handle weapons and survive in the wild. This group actively supports the right of U.S. citizens to have weapons. The organization's website says that it is committed to "teach the Patriots survive to defend the constitution against any enemy threats." In the end, the training will come in handy when the zombies finally wake up and conquer our world.

Idiots. To think that guns in the hands of amateurs will keep our children safe. Sheer lunacy.

Gryphen, that article is about British teachers committing suicide, not US teachers. It's a sobering account, and many of the pressures on them are the same as in the US, but at least they would not be allowed to conceal carry guns, unlike places here. Some statistics on US teacher suicides would be more relevant.
