Who would think that Bible stories belong on the History channel? Oh yeah, what was I thinking?

You know personally this drives me crazy.

The historical accuracy of the Bible has been debunked time and time again, (Though you would hardly know it since Christians have flooded the internet with articles that claim quite the opposite) and yet the History channel is now using it as a textbook.

Look I have no problem with people worshiping in church, or believing in whatever the hell they want to believe in. But when you try to shove that religion down our throats as science in the classroom, and now history on our television sets, THAT is stepping over a line which should open up the religion to scientific and historical scrutiny from scholars who I would think now feel obligated to separate truth from fiction.

And as most of us know THAT is something that the Bible simply cannot endure.

After all who would chose mythology over reality?

Or fantasy over truth?

Gee it seems that there is somebody, if only I could remember who is famous for that very thing.

Oh well, I'm sure it will come to me.

    Who would? Let's see.

    Every Xtian in existence.
Every jackass too stupid to read for themselves.
Every idiot who would rather accept what some jerk in robes tells them.
Every damned fool who WANTS to believe it!
Every lazy pig too tired from lifting his brew to even CONSIDER someone could be lying to them.
And every poor schmuck who was brainwashed as a child into this crappy kind of belief.

Did I leave anyone out? If so, feel free to add to my list.

Who would choose it? What a stupid question, Leland!

I prefer my world where we men are the king of the home and are to be bowed to by women and children. Where the white men rule. And I know there is a giant (male of course) in the sky that guards over me and protects me.

Who would want to live in a reality where THAT stuff isn't true?

So much for it being an educational channel. I regard it as being the modern equivalent of those old Hollywood sandal epics, except without the A grade budget. I will avoid the series like the plague.

HER friends? I won't believe they'll claim her as friends until I hear Burnett and his wife say it. This is another one on those scams that, without government funds and tax breaks, would never be financed. I read about this mythology shit when they were filming. This is a vehicle to promote his wife, who he had to put in front of the camera so she would get over his panty-sniffing of Palin. These people are what they are--- despicable cash-n-carry-kkkristyunists.

Remember, G, the History Channel also has shows on UFO's and other conspiratorial shit that the low-info, thick-forehead, knuckle-draggers like to watch so they can talk across the fence during their breaks from home skoolin their retarded kids.

That was a term that we used for a roommates's girlfriend if he acted real sappy when she's around instead of like a normal young adult. "

This dude just melted around her. I mean, he totally lost contact with the world when she was at our apartment. He hated for us to call her that but she laughed and went along. At first we just used it in the 3rd person until he told her we were making fun of her and told her what we were calling her. She laughed and said that's not too bad, and besides they're making fun of you Bobby, not me! He begged us to shut up about it bc she would play along and bust his balls. He was the biggest case of someone being pussy-whipped that Ive ever seen.

"Hey Bobby, you've got too much damn cologne again. Shnookums must be on the way over. You better take another shower or shell suffocate. And we wouldn't want that to happen to our little Shnookums, would we?"

I join the collective outrage that a cable channel named The History Channel would run this series as if it were historical truth. But then, we saw the Learning Channel run the Sarah fiasco that diminished many American' desire to visit Alaska.

The one comfort I had was to read the disparaging remarks about The History Channel on story run on Huff Po.The network has ruined its rreputation. I quit watching it long ago. I got tired of its shows on Jesus and the like - no objectivity there. History has long been regarded as a social science - which explains, to some degree, why the fundamentalists have tried to undermine its credibility.

There is currently an interesting lawsuit being heard by the Ohio Supreme Court in Freshwater vs. Mt. Vernon Board of Ed. Freshwater, a science teacher, was fired as a teacher with 21 years experience for including Creationism in his class along with Evolution. He put the two on the same level it seems, but used Creationism as a sound theory with Evolution having faults by having gaps in the fossil record. He had told to remove several religious posters in his class, and to take his personal Bible off his desk and out of sight of his students. He didn't comply immediately, but instead rebelled against the order until after being given several more warnings. It appears, but not certain, he is being given legal support by a Christian group in Virginia. I listen to the hearing on Thursday with both sides giving their introductory arguments. The church group representing him have already invested a large amount of money for his defense, and seem to be willing to take this case as far as they can. This case first got the attention of the school board after Freshwater used a Tesla coil to burn a cross on one of his students to demonstrate how the coil works.

No matter how Rob Burnett packages his story, the problem for him is that there are facts and science floating around out there. As hard as they try to abolish science and evolution, critical thinking and reasoning from the schools, if you can read, there are stories in the media and on the internet every day. For example, students discovered that a cosmic cloud in the Milky Way contains the chemical building blocks for DNA and RNA, the beginnings of life. The real story is much more exciting. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/03/01/student-researchers-discover-building-blocks-of-dna-in-cosmic-cloud/

Sorry to disagree, 4:10, but the vast majority of the bible is just plain fiction. Most of what it includes as factual history has been debunked as false. Are there some events that are true? Certainly. In a writing that large someone had to put some facts there.

But historically accurate? BULL! A FEW accurate points does not a history book make.

As far as I can remember, there is no documentation from the Romans (a fanatical record-keeping group) of the census portrayed in the bible as ever having been ordered. And from a logical point of view (and the Romans were efficient if nothing else) having the population move for a census was ridiculous! Have paperwork filled in by the person wherever he/she may be and send the PAPER to a town. To move an entire population is entirely insane.

As far as Jesus is concerned, he may have existed. In fact, probably did. But as far as being the son of god, PROVE IT! History is backed up with certifiable events and documentation that can be verified through MANY accounts and witnesses. If there aren't enough of those to verify something, it is stated as SUPPOSITION and, like true science, is open to debate.

The list goes on and on.

Just because YOU wish to accept it as fact does NOT mean it is.

AS for the statement that if we don't like it, don't watch it, yes. To a certain degree I can agree with you. However, having said that, the main crux of the outrage being displayed here is that it is being PORTRAYED as history when so very little of it actually IS. And by doing so, many poor fools will be deluded into believing your mythology as fact.

And as far as Christianity is concerned, the majority of those here APPARENTLY feel the same as Gryphen. I know I do. ALL organized religion is dangerous. It is responsible for more death, destruction and misery than all other sources combined - excluding disease and accident and natural disasters.

Keep your FAITH if you choose to. That is your right. But be prepared to get inundated with facts to contradict your religion if you attempt to defend it.

      Bravo leland.

Jesus probably existed as a mortal who had compelling thoughts and ideas and excellent PR. I always ask myself: if he were the son of god he would know the past and the future, so why, during the sermon on the mount or anywhere else, did he not mention, oh, I don't know, maybe electricity? Or germ theory? Or the relationship of the earth to the sun? He spoke only as a man of his time and only as a sort of nanny about how we're supposed to behave.

Another point: the Great Flood. There is NO world-wide evidence of such a thing, and there were several civilizations (the Mayans in Central America, the Egyptians right next door to the Middle East, and the Chinese) who have NO record of that occurring anywhere.

      Delete
    5. Leland10:06 AM

Actually, 8:27, while there may be no world-wide evidence of the flood, there is an interesting discovery being studied right now. It is on the Mediterranean side of the Bosporus Strait and it is on the bottom. A tremendous field of earth waves that can be created only from huge flows of water. (There are several examples of this all over the world, one of them being right here in the U.S.)

It is currently believed to have been created when the huge amount of water locked in the Black Sea by a wall of ice or something suddenly broke down and allowed all that water to flood into the Mediterranean. The significance of this is that it may be the root cause of the idea of a great flood and the destruction it was supposed to have created.

Oh. And one other thing. Almost every major ancient civilization religion (and many minor ones) had a myth of destruction. Some by flood, some by fire, some by earthquake. And they were all attributed to a god of some sort. I had a tremendous amount of fun writing that term paper in high school. Almost got me thrown out of school because I included Noah's flood in the paper.

Talk about the sh*t hitting the fan! WHOA!

    6. Anonymous12:31 PM

Leland; early human settlements took place around water, which they used for transportation, food, and (fresh water) drinking. Bodies of water eventually (or sometimes regularly, in the case of the Nile) flood. I've also read about the Black Sea flood that deluged the Mediterranean. I'm sure by local standards, it *was* the Flood of All Floods. It certainly didn't flood the entire world, though, and the proof of that is the populations in China and Central America who kept right on keepin' on without interruption. You'd think someone would have commented on the whole world going underwater, besides one little tribe in the middle east.

    Speaking of Biblical insanity:

Christian Pastor: Women Should Have No Say in How Our Country is Run

Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona is back with another one of his offensive, misogynistic sermons! (His sermon about how his wife cooks for him was incredibly popular, but this one is bound to be on the Greatest Hits album.)

The subject: How good it is to be old-fashioned.

Just as before, highlights are below, because I watched the whole damn thing. His actual words are in quotation marks. My paraphrases of his words are not.

29:55: “Today we have women’s rights! We’ve come a long way, baby! And today, you know, [in a mocking voice] ‘Oh those horrible, horrible days when women had no rights’… Let’s bring them back! Let’s get back to those days! [Fake scream] What are you so worried about? What do you think they mean when they say ‘women’s rights’? You know what they mean? The right to divorce your husband is what they mean. You know what they mean? The right to rebel and disobey your husband. The right to divorce him. The right to go out and get a job and make your own money. The right to tell him what to do. The right to go vote for our leaders as if women should have any say in how our country is run, when the Bible says that ‘I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence’? I AM QUOTING THE BIBLE RIGHT NOW! But it’s old-fashioned.”

That's just it. They're Bible STORIES. Many a story has a tiny grain of truth or event that it is built on, and then it is embellished, exaggerated, woven and spun into a STORY, which bears no direct relationship with TRUTH or actual, accurate HISTORY...it's just a STORY.

More than that, the Bible has been 'interpreted' for centuries for Kings by so many religious 'scholars' that any resemblance to the original writings has long been lost.

Interpretations are always administered through the filter of the interpreter, subject to beliefs, fears, indoctrination, misogyny, homophobia, life experience, loss, grief, education, political leanings, religious leanings...and just plain human foibles like jealousy and greed, so for anyone to say with a straight face that the Bible has any real validity, other than it's storytelling, is absurd and living in delusion. Period.

Believing in a God is another issue altogether. You can believe in a God without ever having consulted a Bible. People all over the world do. God of the 'christian idea' is not the only 'god' that humankind has revered. God is attributed to nature events by indigenous peoples, God is worshipped for sun, rain, heat, cold...God/Goddess for all things Universal.

And much of the perpetuation of faith is in the storytelling, not a book. Passing stories down around the campfire, down through family gatherings, down through clan events. And each time those stories are told, the storyteller puts their own stamp on the story.

I am sure that the original writings of the Bible held some record of historical events, but outside of those who actually experienced those events, witnessed those events, in that timeframe of history, well the rest is just a story that got told, heresay and memory. Over and over and over and over again.

Gryphen - You probably didn't realize that the author to whom you linked to debunk the bible, Abdullah Smith, is a Muslim whose purpose is to promote Islam and the Koran.

Following your link can lead to this little tidbit:
“Islam is the religion that prevents rape; it upholds the dignity and honor of women by commanding them to cover themselves. Women in Islam are not oppressed, but only the Christian women are oppressing themselves by dressing half-naked. (See the pictures at the bottom of the Women section)”

If you can find some original sources from respected historians, archeologists, etc. for future debunking, it would be most helpful. I know such work has been done but it's hard to find good internet links.

Fascinated to learn that inscriptions dating to 8th century BCE refer to Jehovah and his consort-- apparently debunking the idea of monotheism existing at that time. (The scholarly article on the history of biblical archeology was originally published in 1999 in the newspaper Ha'aretz but I can no longer find it at their site.)

Also interesting to find a group in Israel fighting for enlightenment and freedom from orthodox religion similar to groups in the US fighting christian theocracy.

Fundy Christians, Fundy Jews, Fundy Muslims....they all have the exact same beliefs about their right to abuse women and children. The Orthodox Jews are busy in Israel attacking girl children who want to go to school, women who want to ride the bus, women who think they can go outside their homes.

I am so glad we don't have a TV anymore! The history channel was one of my favorites...
