Breaking! Suspect number two is alive and in custody. Update!

Finally!

Update: Courtesy of USA Today:

Police cornered and captured Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Friday night.

The Boston Police Department arrested the 19-year-old at about 8:45 p.m., after finding him holed up in a boat stored in the backyard of a Watertown residence. He was led to an ambulance and driven away from the scene.

Tsarnaev's capture came two hours after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ended a Boston-area lockdown early Friday evening after a massive, day-long search of suburban Watertown, which seemingly failed to flush out the teenager.

Here is a picture of the boat the suspect was found hiding in.

They at first thought he was dead, but then he raised his head and they called in the police negotiator.

It is good he is alive. There is much that we need to know.

Update 2: Believe it or not Lindsey Graham wants this suspects civil rights to be ignored.

Come to think of it I have NO problem believing that Graham did not learn anything from the criminal activity of the Bush administration.

Update 3: The President's speech after the final suspect was taken into custody.

  1. Just heard it too on the Nightly News, which we've had on since they officially came on for their normal evening news. Perhaps we'll find out what the hell they were thinking if he survives?

There's a "public safety" consideration that allows them to question someone without reading them their Miranda rights. I guess they are allowed to try to find out if there are more bombs left around first.

I think the issue about Miranda is a red herring. Miranda rarely keeps people from talking OR stops someone from talking who might otherwise talk except for the warning.

Who here DOESN'T KNOW about Miranda. If you were arrested (rightly or wrongly) would you be influenced by hearing the Miranda warnings? Or would you talk, or not talk, regardless.

They aren't generally repeated in a way that helps the person to understand.

It's largely Kabuki and a hoop the police must jump through.

I'm not saying Miranda is irrelevant. The most significant impace of Miranda is that it is on all the TV shows so everyone now knows.

Lynching is barbaric and outlawed everywhere in this country.
Massachusetts, like about 18 other states, has done away with any capital punishment.
There is no eye for an eye in the civilized world.
Saudi Arabia and North Korea are two of the very few countries, along with the U.S., that still put people to death. They are not models for good behavior.

No. He, and the American people, deserve a trial by jury. This is a land of laws. Remember how besmirched we were as a people when President Kennedy's assassin was shot down. That kind of behavior is as unacceptable in a civil society as what these two young men did on Monday and on Wednesday night.

I was extremely proud to be an American last night: first, when it was announced that the younger brother had been captured alive and, second, when President Obama spoke so forcefully about how this is all going to be played out: according to our legal system. The police handled the situation yesterday impeccably and it would be a disgrace for anyone to take the law into their own hands as it was in November 1963.

One of the things that was obvious throughout the day yesterday was that we are not a country of barbarians. When the trial takes place there may be a death penalty invoked because this involves the crime of terrorism. That decision will be up to the Justice Department and I am sure that this Administration will not be playing "cowboys" but putting what is best for the country first.

I, for one, have felt safer knowing that President Obama is in charge that I ever felt while George W. Bush was in charge. A grown-up is in the White House, not a petulant child.

Now we will find out where and how they purchased their weapons. They are examples of why we need gun control laws enhanced. Sarah Palin's 2nd amendment rights gibberish is defunct.

The problem is that the pressure cookers, nails, bb's, gun powder-- it's all available and doesn't require any special permit to buy the stuff. The remote control devices are found in toys. The backpacks could come from anyplace. The information is available on the internet.

I wish that this would make people look at gun control more seriously, but I am almost afraid to say it. The only thing that will move the NRA is if some crazy person shot up one of their meetings, or did something equally dramatic. (All they have to do if throw a couple of smoke bombs, and not hurt anyone. A good guy with a gun cannot stop a surprise attack).

      @Anon 5:13 -

Yes, that's what I want to know, too. I've heard no mention of the guns involved, yet they used guns to rob a convenience store, shoot a police officer multiple times, car jack an SUV and still have enough rounds left to have a shootout lasting several minutes - I read over 200 shots were exchanged - yet no one has said anything about the guns involved.

It is understandable that everyone would be focused on the bombing aspect of this tragedy, but the other weapons involved should not be overlooked. How large were the magazines? And how on earth did they get a grenade?

      Delete
    3. Anonymous4:02 AM

They did not rob a convenience store, they hijacked the SUV AT the 7/11. Why bother to rob a store when you can get to an ATM and withdraw your money, which the 19 year old did after his brother was shot and killed?

      Delete
    4. Anonymous5:37 AM

Lindsay graham suggested everyone would want an AK47 two nights ago (before he was caught) - because, you know, guns, particularly strong guns, are so useful when someone has bomb material strapped to them, or on them, or with them to throw at your.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous7:08 AM

I watched the video of the shootout and it sounded like they had some type of automatic weapons. I wonder of they were the type that would have been outlawed under Diane Feinstein's bill before it was allowed to expire. Still no word on the type of weapons used or how they were obtained. With every aspect of this incident broadcast 24 hours a day, how is it the issue of their guns has still not been brought up?

  7. To those advocating lynching or torture--

Personally I don't see any utility, or justice, or balm for the victims in answering violence with violence.

Doing so just creates the causes for more violence.

The contrast between the brothers plotting, executing and watching the aftermath and the bystanders and responders racing to comfort, alleviate suffering and save lives is what seperates

BTW this guy is an American citizen, remember.

And yes three cheers for MA & Boston PD and the FBI and the people of Boston/Watertown!

    2. Anonymous3:44 AM

First, they will interrogate him before giving him his Miranda rights ("lawyering up" as you put it). They can do it for a certain period of time because there are public safety issues involved. Then, the US justice system will take over. And that is what makes this country great: a system in place that guarantees a fair trial. Justice will be done but it will be done properly, by adults. Not by "faux" cowboys like the GOP leadership.

We were all blessed that the younger brother was captured alive so that authorities can learn why it all happened and if others were involved and if other devices are hidden around the city. I think that was part of the cathartic reaction we saw on television as people in Watertown and Boston cheered the authorities as they left.

Precisely, the suspect is a US Citizen and committed a crime on US soil. It doesn't matter what or who drove him to commit the crime.

If we start down the slippery slope of declaring him an enemy combatant, what is to stop them from declaring my mother an enemy combatant for getting a speeding ticket simply because she is a naturalized US citizen born in Germany.

It amazes me how xenophobic the republicans have become. Also, did I read that people are going after the Czech Republic because it sounds close to Chechnya. How stupid and ignorant are those people!?!

      Delete
  16. Anonymous7:39 PM

Geez, I'm surprised the republicans haven't called for the people they call "RINO's" to be treated as enemy combatants and water boarded to determine why they turned traitor on the republican party.

Obviously this is a big exaggeration, but the point is that I really don't understand their love for torture.

Anyway, a great day for the victims, their families, and the people of Boston, and may they rest easier tonight knowing that true justice will be served.

I believe young men who commit atrocities should be held accountable for their deeds. That said, I am relieved that the 19-year-old suspect in the Boston bombings allowed himself to be taken alive. I say this as the mother of young men, one of whom happens to be 19. Where there is life, there can be hope and redemption. My prayers are that he will find it.

I say this to counter the hate that Lindsay Graham espouses. To counter an act of hate with more hate accomplishes nothing.

Instead of calling for the torture and death of this lost soul of a young man, everyone's time would be better spent trying to figure out how he got to where he is today.
Also, If the victims allow, he should be made to watch their recovery, dressing changes, swollen bloody stumps,
pictures of the dead little Martin....

G and all commenters, I am so thankful this is all over, have been watching the drama in Boston all those hours, and it finally being over is such a relief. A whole part of Boston on lockdown and the fear it caused, but the nation was watching and praying - still, after all the carnage of innocent people, we have a lot of healing to do, and a lot of insight will be needed to sort out all this.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous1:25 PM

And now, the day after the apprehension, we have the GOP ready to politicize the process and calling for the suspect to be treated as an "enemy combatant." Poor Republicans. They simply cannot accept that President Obama is far superior to his predecessor. I hope the Administration sticks to its plan to handle this situation through the existing justice system. This young man will have a fair trial and a jury will determine his guilt or innocence. The military should have nothing to do with it. We do not need any more "kangaroo courts" in this country.

There is such a simple avenue to answers for all this - Follow the Money.

These guys had no jobs, had apartments, weapons, bomb makings, cell phones, cars, computers, expensive clothing - someone says the running shoes they wore cost 100's of dollars, cash for college money as only the one had a scholarship of $2500 2 years ago, trip to Russia and remained in that area for 6 months, wife and daughter who apparently are cared for - so - the money source is?? Welfare in the US does not provide that level of sophisticated living and travel.
