Happening now: Two explosions at the Boston Marathon finish line. Multiple injuries (And death). Update!

Courtesy of MSNBC:

Two explosions went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, witnesses told NBC News.

The Associated Press reported that bloody spectators were being carried to a medical tent that had been set up to care for tired runners. Video from the finish line showed screams and an enormous cloud of white smoke, and about 20 seconds between the explosions.

Will Ritter, the spokesman for a Massachusetts Senate candidate, told NBC News that he heard what sounded like two explosions and saw smoke rising near the Boston Public Library. He said that he saw three fire engines and police running to the site.

“We heard two really large explosions in rapid succession, about a second apart from each other,” Ritter said. “Everybody kind of ducked and hit the ground.”

Janet Wu, a reporter for NBC affiliate WHDH, told NBC News that she heard two loud explosions. Jackie Bruno, a reporter for New England Cable News, said on Twitter that she saw people’s legs blown off.

“Runners were coming in and saw unspeakable horror,” she said.

This just happened and so information is just now coming in.

However it certainly looks like a terrorist attack and not an accident.

I hope I am wrong about that.

Update: Here is video of the explosions.
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Update 2: This is the most current report on fatalities and injuries.

Update 3: Here is more video of the explosion and its aftermath. There are many journalists who are being very cautious about calling this a terrorist attack, but with two explosive devices going off, and a few unexploded ones currently being diffused I don't know what else we should call it.

Remember just because it is labeled a "terrorist attack" that does NOT mean it is related to al-Qaeda or our problems overseas. There are certainly those in THIS country capable of pulling something like this off as well.
Update 4: According to Boston police there was a third explosion at the JFK library.

I think the label "terrorist attack" is  more than appropriate at this time.

The first suspect is in custody... He is a 20 year old Saudi national with severe burns and shrapnel wounds. He is being guarded in a Boston hospital

A Penske truck tried to access the finish line claiming they had medical supplies, but sped away when questioned further.

3 bombs went off, 2 more were dismantled by officers.

Or is this a domestic terrorist?
The last leg was for Newtown! I don't know why but at first reports were coming from TX?
Was very weird. I thought why Boston Marathon in TX? And why one a Mon?

I've caught bits and pieces of it on the news today, it's just happening when I have a lot on my plate, and it's almost too much to deal with.
My husband's been ill for about a week, he presented with flu symptoms, and now he's paralyzed and on a respirator. We found out it's an auto immune illness called Guilliam Barre Syndrome. Apparently he's got a bad case of it, it's not a virus, but they're cleansing his blood and have him on a respirator. The doctors are "cautiously optimistic" and are taking a "wait and see" approach. I'm hoping for the best and prepared for the worse.
Even with this going on, my heart just breaks for those killed, maimed and emotionally wounded by this attack. It'll take time for me to absorb it all, had there not been those tents and medical personnel in place, I'm sure the damage would have been a lot worse.

He's slowly coming around. Today he was able to to move his index finger, they're doing his fifth, and hopefully last cleansing treatment tomorrow, depending on the results. No one knows what causes it but the doctors seem more optimistic than they did before.

      Thanks again, hugs always help!

As a runner myself, it's even worse knowing that to most of these runners their legs are their freedom and happiness. Some of them run 6-15 miles every day. The loss of limbs makes this attack seem even more darkly personal, though I wouldn't venture to guess that it was intended that way.
The ONLY bright side I can think of is that these marathoners are in peak physical condition, many spend (at minimum) 3 months preparing for their big races. So they honestly stand a great chance at survival and recovery... but even that seems hollow. It's the only comfort I can take from this atrocity.
... that said, I'm honestly writing this through tears of horror. Horror is too slight a word. I had to log off HuffPo because the photos of bone sticking out through skin, blood and terror on faces... Somehow this attack has cut deep. It is beyond senseless violence-- this was obviously planned.

BOSTON (AP) — Two bombs exploded near the finish of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing two people, injuring 22 others and sending authorities rushing to aid wounded spectators, race organizers and police said.

One runner, a Rhode Island state trooper, said he saw at least two dozen people with very serious injuries, including missing limbs.

About two hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

The Boston Marathon said that bombs caused the two explosions and that organizers were working with authorities to determine what happened. The Boston Police Department said two people were killed and 23 others injured.

Competitors and race volunteers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners. Authorities went onto the course to carry away the injured while stragglers in the 26.2-mile race were rerouted away from the smoking site.

Roupen Bastajian, a 35-year-old state trooper from Greenville, R.I., had just finished the race when they put the heat blanket wrap on him and he heard the first blast.

“I started running toward the blast. And there were people all over the floor,” he said. “We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated. … At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing.”

A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

“There are a lot of people down,” said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg.

Smoke rose from the blasts, fluttering through the national flags lining the route of the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathon. TV helicopter footage showed blood staining the pavement in the popular shopping and tourist area known as the Back Bay.

“There are people who are really, really bloody,” said Laura McLean, a runner from Toronto, who was in the medical tent being treated for dehydration when she was pulled out to make room for victims of the explosions. “They were pulling them into the medical tent.”

Cherie Falgoust was waiting for her husband, who was running the race.

“I was expecting my husband any minute,” she said. “I don’t know what this building is … it just blew. Just a big bomb, a loud boom, and then glass everywhere. Something hit my head. I don’t know what it was. I just ducked.”

Runners who had not finished the race were diverted straight down Commonwealth Avenue and into a family meeting area, according to an emergency plan that had been in place.

Boston Marathon's Final Mile Was Dedicated to Newtown Victims

Adding further heartbreak to utter tragedy, the last mile of Monday's Boston Marathon, which was rocked by at least two explosions resulting in an unknown number of injuries and casualties Monday afternoon, was dedicated to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting massacre. Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio said before the race that had a "special significance" because it was 26.2 miles long and there was 26 victims in the Newtown attack. There was also a group of Newtown parents running as part of a group called Team Newtown Strong who were raising money for local charities. A banner honoring the victims, hung at the end of the 26th mile, can be seen in the photo above.

"In the first twenty miles we're honoring the twenty Sandy Hook first graders," Laura Nowacki, a spokesperson for Newtown Strong, explained to WBUR Boston. "When we crest Heartbreak Hill, and we're coming back towards Boston, we run the final six for our six fallen educators, including their lives, to protect our children."

There was a 26-second moment of silence for the victims before the race started.

Update 4:07 p.m.: Newtown families were reportedly seated in the VIP section right by where the explosions went off. There's no word whether they are among the 23 injured and two dead from the explosions.

The live video coming from the site of an explosion at the finish line of the Boston Marathon is fraught with journalistic pitfalls unique to a situation like this. On Monday afternoon, Fox News’ Shep Smith alternated studio coverage with raw, live footage from the scene, which contained images and information that would normally be checked or censored before broadcast. Case in point: this clip in which an apparent official on the scene is caught telling someone that “People have been blown apart…three for sure that are dead,” followed shortly by a shot of a man in a wheelchair whose legs have been blown off (WARNING: Extremely Graphic Video):

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence.

Newtown families were at Boston Marathon

They were in the VIP seats and were not injured.

As always, the Boston Marathon was held on Patriot's Day in Massachusetts. Per Charles Pierce, Patriot's Day was important to Timothy McVeigh, and possibly still is to others of that ilk.

Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House being closed off for security.

Boston NBC affiliate has an updated story. There was a memorial to the 26 victims of Newtown at the 26 mile point.

Confirmed that it was an intentional bombing. Three undetonated bombs found, one rendered "safe".

Good news: Per ABC, no radiological material was included in the bombs.

I, too, learned of the attack here. Thanks, G.

My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and all who were terrorized by the attack. The Boston police seem to have prevented an even worse outcome.

I hope the perpetrator is caught soon. The speculation by some on the right is sickening. Fox News contributor Erik Rush is already blaming Muslims: "They're all evil. Kill them all."

The only people following sarah palin these days are the same whackadoodle doos.

You should read the crazy things they are saying over there today about the bombing. I'm actually kind of surprised that $arah doesn't just shut down the site what with the weirdos that frequent it. Can't possibly be good for her image, or even safe!

The level of crazy seems to have shot up 10 or 20 fold over the past couple of days and I didn't think it was possible for them to get even nuttier.

The sad thing is that if this is a domestic terrorist thing, people will have forgotten about it by next week. (Except for people in Boston.) because "only two people" died....
and if this is an Al Qeda thing, people will be freaking out for weeks and SOME people will be calling for Obama to be impeached because TWO people died.

    Both reactions are ridiculous, IMO.

the first suspect is a Saudi.... It was Saudi hijackers that were responsible for the tragedy of 911.

Are we going to attack Saudi yet?

First explosion and immediate aftermath. So impressive to see First Responders and men in army uniform working so quickly and effectively. What is hard to tell is that there were lots of people on the sidewalk, behind the metal barricades, watching the end of the race. The bomb, reportedly in a trash can, was devastating to them and their limbs.

Granted, the NY Post does get the occasional "scoop", but I hesitate to take their word on late-breaking news because... well, Rupert Murdoch.

I'm not sure who's behind Business Insider... but I think their "news" section is an aggregator for top news stories... like HP and Drudge (and many, many others).

Anyway, I take any late-breaking news bulletins from either with a grain of salt until confirmed by other reliable sources.

Well, not surprisingly, CNN ran a streamer that noted that President Obama did not use the word "terror" without, of course, quoting anything from what the President did say. I am sure that President Obama, being a Constitutional lawyer, was very careful in his wording. It all seemed extremely appropriate to me but then, I'm not a fan of either Fox News or CNN.

At 8:30 pm eastern time, O'Reilly declares this "an act of war" and he is bothered the president did not say that. Bill O is ratcheting up Fox fear factor.

Live stream of continuous coverage from ABC/Boston affiliate:

    http://livewire.wcvb.com/Event/117th_Running_of_Boston_Marathon/72958055?ss=1

They do tend, as most, to rerun and rerun same initial video...and repeat and repeat 'chaos', when actually the folks targeted most all turned around and helped each other very smoothly. Helped that the Medical Tent for the Marathon was right there...

Though it is a fact that the traffic will be disrupted badly for a good time; understandably.

What does it mean that we have gotten good at Emergency Preparedness?
or, that so many have served in those awful overseas wars, that it is almost a given that in any type of catastrophe, a military-trained First Responder will already be on scene and able to render aid...

  57. Anonymous4:26 PM

Bill O'Reilly is trying to link this to 911 that Boston is "a well thought out military campaign". The only exercise he gets is leaping to conclusions. Shit, now he's saying some jihad targeted children. Backpeddlling now...

The major terror for me is not knowing who did this and if more acts are planned.

  58. Gryphen, I saw the following Tweet from "West Wing Reports":
    ‏@WestWingReport 24m
Bad stuff often happens 3d week in April: Va. Tech massacre: Apr. 16. Waco siege Apr. 19; OKC bombing Apr. 19; Columbine: Apr. 20

I remember years ago reading here that the Palins believe the 18th of any month has a special significance for them. Thus, Trig's alleged birth date and the first announced birth date for Tripp (Dec 18th), the serendipitous (or induced) birth date for Bristol (Oct 18th), the nearly exact birth date for Track (April 20th) and Piper (March 19th).

Do you have a clue why they believe this? Does it have anything to do with the kind of people they hang with, the secessionists?

there was no third bombing - there was a fire at the JFK library.

Although the reports indicate that no suspect is in custody, bystanders tackled a Saudi national because he looked suspicious. He is still being guarded at Brigham & Womens hospital.

the bomb drill also in Boston at the same time was confusing.

This is what hate looks like, regardless of whether the person or people responsible were born in the USA or somewhere else. It’s a day in which more innocence was stolen by someone who hopes that it will be replaced with the sort of hatred that makes it possible to plan something this horrific. It’s also a day in which we pray for families and loved ones of the victims. We thank God for keeping our family and loved ones who were there, safe and as unscathed as one can be upon witnessing this sort of terror and destruction.

For all the things we don’t know there are a few things that are abundantly clear. This crime was against much that is great about humanity: Sportsmanship, charity, family, and yes, patriotism (not to be confused with nationalism) . We do know that hatred will not prevail. For all the chaos, and the fact that this act represents the worst in humanity, the people who went into the smoke to help the injured showed us that the best in us still prevails.
