Ireland, once a bastion of Catholicism, about to change their constitution to allow same sex marriage. WTF America? Update!

Courtesy of Inside Ireland:

The Constitutional Convention has voted 79% in favour of a referendum on civil marriage for same-sex couples.

The Convention voted on Sunday afternoon with 18% against. The Convention recommended that the Constitution should be changed to allow for marriage for all.

The Government said it would decide on whether to accept the recommendation after an Oireachtas debate on the Convention's reports later this year.

Tánaiste Labour Gilmore has welcomed the decision by members of the Constitutional Convention to recommend the holding of a referendum on same sex marriage.

"I have always believed that our laws reflect the past, not the future on this issue. It’s not the role of the State to pass judgement on who a person falls in love with, or who they want to spend their life with," said Eamon Gilmore in a statement on Sunday.

Of course Ireland is about two days behind France:

The French senate voted today to legalise same-sex marriage in France, putting a landmark bill on track to become law by summer.

The vote in the upper house of Parliament — led bypresident Francois Hollande’s Socialists — comes despite boisterous protests. Opponents, mostly conservatives and Catholics, have sought to defend traditional marriage.

So there you have it, the world is finally welcoming the idea of marriage equality with open arms, and what is happening in America? Well just the other day the Republican party voted unanimously to "reaffirm the party’s commitment to upholding the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman."

We should be leading the world in providing freedom and equality to our citizens, instead of bringing up the rear.

Fuck the Republicans, and fuck those  Fundamentalist assholes who are denying the same right that they enjoy to other who fail to love in the way they find socially acceptable.

Update: Okay well THIS is an unfortunate coincidence:

The European Storm Forecast Experiment - also known as Estofex - says a level one warning is the lowest warning out of three, and says there's just a 5% probability of a tornado hitting the country. (The country of Ireland that is.)

I imagine this will provide gist for the mill when it comes to Pat Robertson's response to this news from Ireland.

  1. Until recently, Ireland was THE big supplier of priests to RCCult dioceses around the world.

    CWN - October 31, 2012
Only 12 men began studies for the priesthood this autumn in Ireland’s 26 dioceses—a record low.

“On average, just 50% of men who enter Irish seminaries go on to be ordained,” observes Michael Kelly, editor of the Irish Catholic. “Based on this year’s entry of 12 men remaining steady—if not declining further, as certainly seems possible—approximately 180 Irishmen will be ordained diocesan priests in the next 30 years. At the same time, it is estimated that 1,684 priests will have either died or retired from active ministry in that time-frame.”

Yet another excellent indication of the increase in rationality and non-fact-free thinking in the increasingly secular Ireland.

Reminds me of "The butterfly effect".

You're spot on with weather phenomenon and Pat Robertson's ilk. Their "Angry God" is "punishing" the innocent who happen to be in the way for the "sins" of others. If I believed, I'd rather have a benevolent God than one that allows people to die as a "warning" to others. Isn't that counterproductive for someone who's job description is "The Creator"?

Wait for it, Pat will explain it in detail with select quotes from the good book.

  4. uhm, i literally am confused about the "bringing bad weather down upon the gays" angle.

is a 5% chance of a tornado somewhere in ireland a big deal? it's fucking 5%!

i might be just jaded from most of a life lived in the USA midwest, where most summer thunderstorms ALWAYS carry some tornado potential, but a "5%" chance of a tornado is literally -within day to day life- very similar to "no tornado, do not worry about the weather".

so i'm not getting the snark... can someone fill me in?

  5. you know, that's a 95% chance of going about your day WITHOUT meeting a tornado, i'd take that weather forecast most any day of the year as a GOOD one!

from that angle, let's all thank anything we do for the 95% chance that the weather might be wet or dismal but NOT actually dangerous. so see, "the divine" smiles upon ireland right now! ;D
