One Boston Marathon bombing suspect dead, the other still at large after massive shootout. Update!

Suspect on left has been killed, suspect on the right, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, remains at large.
Courtesy of ABC News:

One suspect in this week's deadly Boston Marathon bombing was killed after a police shootout, and a second suspect, identified by officials as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, remains at large and the subject of a manhunt, police said early this morning.

Tsarnaev, the man the FBI identified Thursday only as Suspect 2 in photos related to the marathon bombing investigation, is on the loose and is armed and dangerous, police said. He is the target of an "active search by tactical teams."

"We believe this is a terrorist, we believe this is a man that's come here to kill people," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said in a brief news conference this morning. T

he first suspect was killed after exchanging gunfire with police officers, during which multiple explosive devices were detonated, police said. Officials at Beth Israel Hospital reported they received one patient who later died, but would not confirm it was the first suspect.

The first suspect had an IED strapped to his body, and reportedly was run over.

I am watching Morning Joe right now and the video of the police shootout is unbelievable.

I will update this post as new information comes in.

Update: This from The Boston Globe:

Police are warning residents in East Watertown to stay in their homes, and not to answer the door unless they see a uniformed police officer outside. They said drivers should not stop in the area roughly bounded by Dexter, Laurel, and Arsenal streets.

According to Alben, the night’s outbreak of violence began when police received reports of a robbery of a convenience store in Kendall Square near MIT. A few minutes later, an MIT police officer, who has not been identified, was shot multiple times while in his cruiser at Main and Vassar streets, near Building 32, better known as the renowned Stata Center on the MIT campus.

The officer was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital. A short time later, two men carjacked a Mercedes SUV at gunpoint, and the owner of that car was able to flee at a gas station on Memorial Drive.

The SUV proceeded out Memorial Drive toward Watertown followed by a long train of police vehicles in pursuit. At one point during the pursuit, the two suspects opened fire on Watertown police and a Transit Police officer, who was shot and who remains in critical condition at a Boston-area hospital this morning.

During the gunfight, the man known as Marathon suspect No. 1 was wounded and was taken into custody. This morning, Dr. Richard Wolfe said the man was brought to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center emergency room about 1:10 a.m. with multiple traumatic injuries. “It was more than gunshot wounds,’’ Wolfe told reporters about 5:30 a.m. today.

“It was a combination of injuries. We believe a combination of of blasts, multiple gunshot wounds.”

Reports are that the suspects have been in America since 2001 and 2003. (The older brother became a permanent resident in 2007.)

Update 2: Here is video of the firefight between the suspects and police.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
It sounds like a war zone.

Update 3: MSNBC has a pretty good rundown of what we know so far.

Update 4: The suspects are brothers, the other brother's name is Tamerlan Tsarnaev, here is information about his Facebook page.

They are indeed Islamic, but at least one of them is from Chechen (Fixed).

Update 5: Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick held a press conference urging residents to "shelter in place:"

“We’ve had a very rapidly developing situation over the course of the night,” Patrick began. “Suspect one is dead. Suspect two is on the run.”

“We have an MBTA officer who is seriously wounded and he’s in surgery right now,” Patrick added. “We have an MIT security office who has been killed.”

He said that the Boston transit service has been suspended in order to facilitate a massive and ongoing manhunt. “We’ve got every assed that we can possibly muster on the ground right now,” Patrick said. He asked for the public’s assistance to help them keep safe.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said that the “shelter in place” request from police to the public has been extended to the entire city of Boston.

Our hearts go out to the citizens of Boston right now, and hope that everybody remains safe.

Update 6: This is what greeted one resident of Watertown this morning. Seen outside her window.

Those are SWAT members surrounding a home in Watertown.

Update 7: According to Pete Williams the police have the other suspect's location.

However there has also been a THIRD person taken into custody as well. There may be more people involved than previously believed.

Update 8: Here is a much better photograph of the suspect still at large.

Update 9: A photo to chill the blood.

Bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev strolls behind bombing victim Martin Richard minutes before explosion.

The two suspects are brothers, the one killed was run over by his brother as he fled from authorities in the hijacked SUV. Towns on lockdown, T shut down, Amtrak from Bos to Providence shutdown. This is insane!

The name, as I understand it is Chechen although it appears they they came here from Kurdistan. Chechnya is the Muslim area of the Caucasus that has been waging jihad against the Russians since the 19th century. I'm afraid they most likely be Muslims. :(

Regardless of whether they are Muslim, they have been here a long time, and as such, the NRA gave them easy access to whatever they needed to kill Americans. But give you short odds it won't be a day before Fox, Rush, and the rest are blaming Obama and Dems for 'being weak on terror and immigration, and loving Muslims.' Heaven forbid they take one iota of responsibility for creating the hate that relaly caused this. And kudos to the FBI and Boston police for getting on this so fast...you guys are amazing!

    2. That is a very good point.

I wonder how this will impact the gun debate?

Though of course we know that the Right Wing will focus on the fact that they are Islamic.

Oh, and that it is somehow President Obama's fault.

Just got off the phone with my husband to let him know our two daughters who live in Boston are okay. One in lockdown at Brigham and Womans (R.N. coming off the night shift, she said she has to sleep there). Quote "this is nuts." And my other daughter is at home in Dorchester.

My husband's in construction so he listens to talk radio at work and he said the Wingnuts are already screaming Victory!! Immigration crack down!! Obamas fault!!

I was working in Boston yesterday and there was a somberness in the air as everyone went about their business. I was at MGH when Obama came to visit. Went smoothly. I wouldn't really have known he was there. Even one of the Doctors we interviewed said he was 100ft away but Obama only went to visit the victims.

I freelance and several of the outlets I work for have offices in Watertown. I'm down on the South Shore about an hour away so things are pretty serene here. Think I'll take a nice looong walk on the beach later.

Was thinking of taking my son on a Duck Tour since he's home on school vacation but the weather didn't look so good. Glad I didn't drive up there today. Crazy Days.

Gryphen, they ARE Muslims. While the RW focuses on that, the LW defends it. Just be honest about it. You rarely want to admit that radical Islam is a problem in our world and it is. And it has nothing to do with Islamaphobia. Radical Islam is a huge movement that does exist and they believe in the cold blooded murder of ANY infidel (non Muslim). Yes they are a minority of all Muslims, but to deny their existsnce and make excuses for it is naive.
You really should read some books about the jihadist movement and interviews with people who have left it..

Your point is quite valid. However, it is off the mark I believe Gryphen was trying to make - at least, as I read his comment.

Yes, there are radical Muslims, just as there are radical Christians. (Just a point of discussion, folks. Don't go trying to interpret that as me saying there are those in the Christian faith who kill like the radical Muslims. They USED to, so let's just stick to the CURRENT situation, okay?)

I believe that Gryphen was trying to say that the RW will try to focus EXCLUSIVELY on the fact they are Muslim and that it is simply further proof we need to get rid of all of them. (It isn't and we shouldn't!)

Faux News is already pushing for that (snidely) and has been for quite a while. And then there are the so-called commentators who have been openly claiming (Oh. EXCUSE me, using sarcasm, not saying it) we need to kill them all - or words that enflame ignorant people into believing that.

They will USE their being Muslim to guide people away from the issue of where did these guys get their weapons? Where did these guys get grenades (assuming the news reports of those are accurate). Where did these guys get the explosive materials they used?

THAT should be the argument here, but those damned fools will use ANYTHING - including lies - to divert the attention of the public. They will use ANY argument they can find to divert attention away from the culpability of those who defeated the gun control efforts. AND they will use any argument to PREVENT the gun control issue to come back to the floor of the Senate. (And no, I am not saying the passage of any of the current gun control ideas would have stopped this since it takes time to implement anything. But in the future...?)

I believe THAT is what Gryphen was intimating.

And if you follow his IM, you know damned good and well that was his point this time.

The NRA gave them access to pressure cookers and ball bearings? Was it the NRA that allowed foreign terrorists to open MSA chapters at the schools? The NRA brainwashed these youngsters with moral relativism, disregard for human life, religious intolerance and a fundamental hatred of America?

No. As with the Discovery shooter and Jarred Laughner, you leftists created and armed these monsters which is why you defend them and point fingers at people who have done nothing but try to prevent this from happening.

What do I know; I'm less than human because my informed view opposes your violent rhetoric and hate speech. I'm just a combat vet or "baby killer," even though I've killed a lot less babies than you people have, and my counter terrorist experience alone makes me more qualified than your queen of the DHS. But you will just call me and the vast majority of my brothers in arms "crazy right wingers" while crapping on the freedoms our blood paid for and tramping on the bodies of the dead in order to create many more helpless victims. And that's if my post isn't censored as is usually done by your potemkin media critters.

Isn't it all so sad. I hope that the brother will be captured alive so that we can finally find out what was going on in their minds that led them down this path. The brother who was killed had written on facebook that he had had no American friends. Well, blowing up the finish line at the Boston Marathon is certainly not the way to make friends! I also hope that people in this country will not become all the more isolationist as a result of this past week's events. We all came from somewhere. A few generations back, my ancestors were in Ireland, Germany and Poland being poor and feeling pretty hopeless, except for the prospect of America. Being from "somewhere else" does not automatically make one a bad person. Something simply was not working right in the minds of these two. I would guess that the younger brother was following the lead of his older brother and not the other way around. The only way we'll ever know the real story is if the brother still at large is brought to justice safely.

I think it's funny how all of US ( and yes myself included) wanted this to be domestic right wing terrorists. It validates our political views and I think we should at least be honest about it. The fact is they ARE Muslims. And that no, most Muslims are not terrorists or violent.
If you look through the posts here, you are all saying they are white or this and that.
Gryphen likes to say the Queran is peaceful, but have any of you read it?? Extreme Islamists ARE a problem in the world.. To pretend they aren't is naive. We don't know what motivated these guys. Maybe they are just cold blooded killers. But what if it is their religion. Will we even acknowledge that?? I can tell we don't want to.
And yes, I keep saying we because I'm forced to acknowledge my own bias...

Yes, the Qu'ran has that section about conversion by the sword. And yes, I HAVE read it. In fact, I keep a copy next to my bed - along with a copy of the Bible. Not for reasons you might believe, either. I keep them both there to remind me of what I DON"T want to believe in and the lies that organized religion perpetrates and perpetuates.

I also have several hundred history books so I am aware of a good many of the horrors that organized religion has brought to the world.

Now I have a question for you? Have you read the BIBLE? Same shit different words.

And please, DON"T say "you are all saying they are...." I didn't. And neither did a LOT of commenters.

As some have said of Gryphen: PLEASE don't paint ALL of us with the same brush.

Also, I guess I missed a few postings by Gryphen. Enlighten me, please. WHEN did he say the Qu'ran was peaceful? My impression is that he feels the same way about any organized religion that I do. It is hateful and destructive.

  17. There are many complexities here and there is one simple fact -- there was a terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon resulting in deaths and terrible injuries.

I don't know what motivated these sick guys. I have a feeling that some brand of fundamentalist Islam may be involved, but it is also VERY important to understand that they are Chechen, not Russian. The Russians conquered Chechnya about a century ago and attempted to brutally control this region. In response, some Chechens organized various terrorist attacks against Russia, some at the end of the 20th century.

I think we loose ourselves if we attempt to justify any type of violence against innocents, no matter what the cause is. I think we need to stop looking at this msssacre from the right/left angle of U.S. politics alone. Let's realize -- we simply cannot solve big or small problems with violence.

Finally- BTW - over thirty years ago I lived on one of the EXACT streets in Watertown where the shootout happened and where the SWAT sweeps are going on right now. For me this suggests that we are all connected, like it or not.

My question is what did these young men think they would prove? In a few years we will still mourn the victims but the acts that they perpetrated will not change much. If they are that angry they should try to make change through the political process or write a book or make a documentary. There are ways to funnel anger into positive change. This kid is 19 and thrown his life away! If he's Muslim he sure isn't living by the tenant of "asalaam alaykum." If it's drones like some have inferred, they would have been better off with a big protest sign at the finish line because in America you have 1st Amendment rights. Now whatever cause for which this heinous crime was enacted is lost in the drama of the unending news cycle, and the many of Americans who just have to go to work everyday and feel inconvenienced. Wouldn't it have been better if these young men were a guest on The Colbert Report to get the word out about what they are protesting???

I've been watching this on and off almost all day. They just made an announcement that they have taken the younger suspect into custody. He was hiding in a boat, apparently wounded, but there's no word yet on his condition.
Nothing will bring closure to the families of those who were killed and injured. Maybe this time we'll learn how they became "radicalized", who funded them, were the weapons they had licensed and legally purchased (I doubt it). Five days of terror are over for Boston. Getting him alive was the best result. Congratulations to all of Boston's finest, the FBI, and everyone who helped in any way.
