CBS News interviews sweet little old lady after Oklahoma tornado destroys her home, and then everything gets awesome.
Watch until the 1:39 mark. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Wolf Blitzer asks atheist tornado survivor if she thanked god: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/cnns-wolf-blitzer-asks-atheist-tornado-survivor-if-she-thanked-the-lord/
Mia Farrow tweet: mia farrow @MiaFarrow 18m Wolf Blitzer asks tornado survivor if she thanked the Lord; she says,"Actually I'm an atheist. LOL it's on youtube
That was awesome!! Only one thing kind of bugged me though. The reporter didn't even try to help the poor lady until she asked!! I know I would have been heaving that stuff right off as soon as I saw the poor dog. The crew seemed more concerned with getting a "good shot."
But the reporter was rather condescending to ask if she was aware of what had happened. Made it seem as if the woman was too old and doddering to know what happened. Good for her for answering "I know EXACTLY..."
Someone sent that video to me earlier today and I made the mistake of watching it at work. What a mascara streaked, swollen eyed, runny nosed mess I was! As a dog lover, I could imagine the joy she must have felt, but my heart also aches for the others who have lost so much. Such a tragedy...
I've been watching TV coverage of the tornado stories, and they have a common thread-- people helping people. Teachers saving children. Rescuers and first responders. People in the hospital getting all of their patients to safety, including 4 OB patients expecting babies and people in intensive care. This is what Melissa Harris Perry talked about, the spirit of community, of people helping each other. We all do rely on each other.
Since Sarah Palin insists of raising her own children without any help from anyone (except for the babysitters, the extended family and her consultants), I have question for Sarah. With Chuck Senior in the hospital recovering from heart surgery, who should look after his safety? By the way, isn't time for Chuck to come home and for Junior to post some more much-too-personal family photos of the recovering patient?
It seemed a bit fakey...Or maybe they edited some of it out. But was the woman standing there next to the covered dog the whole time? and the report just happened to notice?
Or maybe they were moving around and they edited the moving around part out? And the dog was too traumatized to bark to get attention?
The report seemed not to want to "touch" anything. Why didn't she help the poor old woman?
It looked like the dog was under a pile of rubble to the right of the interview. I suspect the dog heard his Mommy's voice and started to struggle toward it and got as far as it could get peaking out. The reporter saw movement and upon closer examination saw it was a dog. Probably had no idea it was this woman's dog.
There have been quite a few dog and cat rescues as well as a pair of horses.
The Oklahoma County Sheriff's have a photo of a dog found and rescued that it turns out was keeping vigil by it's owner's body under the rubble. The officer that rescued the dog says he'll be going back to the shelter to adopt the dog as soon as he can if it is not claimed by family.
7:05 (and 2:57) Sorry, you are right. I thought to myself as I typed it that "I'm getting too cynical and don't trust these "news" people at all anymore."
I went back and watched again and see that it was all one take. I loved that the off camera guy got excited when he saw the dog move.
And it makes sense that if she's standing there pointing to where she was when the tornado stopped that the dog might be there somewhere near the range or whatever the big white thing is.
And it makes sense that they were somewhere else and told the woman to go stand by where she was at the end which put them in the vicinity of the buried dog--who was probably too traumatized and maybe even unconscious when the woman first went looking for him.
I feel better. Now I can cry for the old woman who put the reporter in her place, and rescued her treasured dog.
So sad and so hard for all of them. And much hardship still remains for them as they literally and figuratively dig themselves out.
This woman obviously has been tempered by a long and probably hard life and I have nothing but admiration for her calm steadfastness in the face of this disaster. All the best to her and her furry companion. I hope they both will have better days ahead.
Another dog rescued this little guy looks like his was in the tornado :( http://www.dogheirs.com/dogheirs/posts/3344-puppy-survives-moore-tornado-how-to-help-others-affected-by-the-storm
And a facebook page for dogs, cats, rabbits lost, rescued is here https://www.facebook.com/animalresourcecenter
So happy that ladies dog was ok! She looked so shocked and saddened and then so happy when she saw him. Boo to the person who said that looked fake. So sad for all the people and animals affected by this.
Humorously, Bouncy embraced his new found freedom by trotting out into the street where he was immediately hit by a news van. The lord doth work in mysterious ways.
1:34 Now that is just downright tacky! I admit to being cynical and confused by how the filming played out but I wasn't tacky.
Also, having been corrected (I came back to this post JUST so I could see if someone explained it to me!) I posted an additional comment expressing my understanding.
So, 1:34 toughen up and come back here and post an apology now that someone has posted a note explaining the error of your ways.
Link to their Facebook and Twitter. Dog was found and taken to shelter. They went back later and found the dog had been guarding his dead owner who was under the rubble. The Deputy that found the dog plans on going back and adopting the dog if he is allowed. (I.E. no other family steps forward to claim it.)
I'd adopt that dog in a heartbeat. The loyalty of Hachiko and Bobbie.
And she has be reunited with her owner. Susie is a 12 year old schipperke/border collie mix. No one knows how she ended up 1/2 a mile from her house sitting vigil over the body of a stranger. (to me the photo sorta looks like she was pawing at the wood covering the body). Her owner's sister saw her picture on the OK County Sheriff's facebook page and Susie and her daddy Curtis have already been reunited. Both very happy and emotional.
That reporter obviously went to Univ of Idaho for her communications degree. Geesh.
I was also distracted by what looks like melanoma over the woman's left eye...or maybe it is only seborrheic keratosis..anyway, so glad for the lady as that dog obviously gives her love and purpose!
Looked like very even scratches to me. Like perhaps she had lived through a tornado and been covered in debris after being blown out of her bathroom as her house collapsed around her.
Oh, I keep watching that over and over and over....
Some diminish how very important our pets are and suggest that those who treasure them as a family member are somehow undervaluing human life. But, to look at this woman, who has lost everything--whether she has human family members and friends to help her or not--this dog will get her through.
Apologize for a joke that hurts only the sensibilities of the most sensitive reader and neither the dog nor old lady? Gimme a break! This blog works overtime making sport of an entire family. I'm not going to apologize for a humorous quip.
Dog says, "WTF???"
ReplyDeleteThank you.

The joy of finding children and animals alive is indescribable!
ReplyDeleteAnybody, actually, but children and animals?
PRICELESS!

The lady is awesome for saying "I know EXACTLY..." to the reporter. The dog looks like it wishes it could say the same to the reporter.

ReplyDeleteI am so happy for her. After the trauma she went through she needs her little dog.
ReplyDeleteThat was amazing! I have a feeling this lady will be just fine, she saved her best friend and has a great attitude.
ReplyDeleteNo, she said the dog was her "second friend" -- God being the first.
DeleteI stand corrected. She did say god answered her first prayer and she made it, then answered her second prayer and the dog made it.

That is one awesome lady- and her little dog, too!
ReplyDelete(is that you, Toto?)
At some later date, I'd really love to hear her response to questions about her Ok. senators' votes against funding for Hurricane Sandy victims!
Weeping, but happy, Wild Tortoise

The woman was certainly much more articulate than the clueless reporter. So glad her dog made it too.

To quote The Princess Bride BOO! BOO!
DeleteThat's the long version. The ONLY version to watch. I searched quite a while yesterday until I found it.
ReplyDeleteBecause it shows the end as the woman and her dog walk off.
What a little trooper. After he got out and got his pets he was like walkies, I'll take the lead and off he went.
Here is a link to the story about the little dog found by the OK county sheriff's dept.

3:10 Thanks for the link! I love dogs (and cats) (and other animals) and just love tear-jerker animal stories.
