Mathematics. Perhaps the most amazing poem about British immigration concerns that you will ever hear.
I love the cadence of her voice and for reasons that I can't quite explain I always tear up around the 1:20 mark.
Actually, Randall, there is more to that. First and foremost is the tribalism that we cannot seem to overcome. It has been with us since the dawn of time and by now is probably as hardwired as is the pure survival instinct. This will probably be one of the causes of our eventual extinction.
Secondly, most Americans cannot, not do they care to, understand British English, thus we see the above tribalism in full force.
That said, the dialects in Great Britain, as well as in Germany and other nations in Europe have such distinctly different dialects borne of centuries of regional/tribal speech patterns, that even the native "Standard/Queen's English" or "Hochdeutsch" speakers often have great difficulties understanding when "the locals" are conversing with one another.
It's kind of too bad that most of the conservatives I know are too shallow to listen to, much less comprehend, this brilliant poem.

I agree, Jesse, that was brilliant. Off to my Facebook page it goes. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Holly's brilliance. She's got talent!
ReplyDeleteShe has others that speak to the human condition, especially like this one about how women are treated like girls by society-
