President interrupted three times during speech on drones.

Courtesy of MSNBC:

President Barack Obama was repeatedly interrupted by a heckler whose taunts slowed the delivery of a major national security speech in the Washington, D.C. area.

The unidentified heckler began shouting at the president toward the tail end of his highly-anticipated address, when he touched upon U.S. policy toward detainees suspected of terrorist acts.

Obama was forced to pause three separate times and talk over the protester, interrupting the flow of the closing section of the speech at National Defense University.

“I'm about to address it ma'am, but you've got to let me speak,” Obama scolded the woman. “Why don't you sit down and let me tell you exactly what I'd do."

The antiwar group Code Pink, which often interrupts high-profile political events with vocal protests against U.S. foreign policy and national security strategy, said its founder Medea Benjamin was the person responsible for the interruption.

Though the president appeared somewhat irritated by the interruption, he said he was willing to cut the woman “some slack, because it’s worth being passionate about.”

He added after another interruption: “The voice of that woman is worth paying attention to. Obviously I do not agree with much of what she said. And obviously she wasn’t listening to me and much of what I said. But these are tough issues, and the suggestion that we can gloss over them is wrong.”

I think he handled that pretty well. And he is right, this is something many of us feel very passionately about and he, and his administration, need to recognize that.

Here is the transcript of the entire speech in case, like me, you missed it earlier.

She's got an appropriate name: Medea. I have enormous respect for President Obama; I just wish that more people on the left side of things would show a little respect for him too.

  2. The protesters were from Code Pink. Here's a link to the video of Medea Benjamin being ejected:

I believe in free speech. I took an oath to defend the Constitution and all the freedom it provides. I believe in civil disobedience as a tactic. However, I have gotten to the point of seeing Medea Benjamin almost in the same light as John McCain or ever Sarah, in that it seems it is becoming more about her, and not the ideas she stands for, whatever those are. What she did was along the same lines as those tea baggers who kept interrupting and heckling their congressmen during the medical reform debate.

Here is some information about Obama's heckler:
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/code-pink-activist-medea-benjamin-heckles-obama-195521792.html While Sarah Palin and her ghost writer address Sarah's posts directly to Mr.President, this woman actually does engage with President Obama. (He handled her very well, telling her that he was going to answer her question).

Sarah Palin must be seething. Imagine someone yelling at the President of the United States and getting all of that attention. The problem for Sarah is that she might have to join Code Pink, an organization that was founded to protest the war in Iraq. They show up at NRA events, telling them that they have blood on their hand. They are willing to be arrested to make their public statements (unlike Palin who hides behind a Facebook post or a tweet).

First he redefined war as being between a country and a "group", instead of between a country and another country. Can or would our country declare war on say, the Catholic Church? Or closer to home for Gryphen, Atheists? If war was declared on Catholics, would the actions of one, or a small group of Catholics be justification for rounding up all Catholics and holding them without charges for years and using "enhanced interrogation" on them? (ahh Hell, let's call it what it really is, TORTURE) Would it justify using drone assassinations on anyone assumed to have or stepping into a leadership position in the Church, because Catholics were deemed to be terrorists? Would it justify ignoring the sovereignty of other countries because Catholics live there? Would it justify spying on all domestic citizens because they could all be sympathetic to Catholics?

And most important, if another country declared a group, say Baptists, to be a terrorist organization, should that justify that country to bombing your Baptist neighbor's house by drone strike and calling your kid who was playing with the Baptist's kid, "collateral damage"? You think something like that might make you want to join the Baptist church and seek revenge?

    1. There are no “assumptions" with regard to Anwar al-Awlaki (Aulaki alternatively), he was Death On Wheels and that's all there is to it. True it's tragic, for he was radicalized by our blundering into Iraq, but the only remedy was the one applied sad though it be.

Anon at 1:00 pm. Well, if the Baptist Church declared war on the US and blew up buildings killing thousands of people, I guess we would have to respond with some kind of force. But really your hypothesis is simply absurd. No one is going to "round up" the Catholics or the Baptists. By the same token, it would be nice if certain religious groups in this country did not try to impose their ideology on everyone else all of the time. More to the point of President Obama's speech, while drone attacks are not pleasant to contemplate, they have their place in the ongoing struggle against terrorism from organizations like Al Quaeda. Better to hone in on someone like Anwar al-Awlaki than to start a war against a country to get at terrorists from other countries.

Our President is so classy!!!! I have so much respect for him. The Republicans just keep trying to bring him down and he continues to work around them...

I cannot help but compare Sarah Palin to Jodi Arias who is on trial currently for her life due to murdering her boyfriend. Their personalities are so similar - everything is ALWAYS about them...they lie and are so quick to judge others. Both are very evil women and I'm sure hell is awaiting both!

The POTUS is too cool. He did not break stride. Sure that lady has freedom of speech, but she does not have freedom of stupidity. The POTUS knows what is at the heart of this disrespect, and so do we. When Hillary get into office in 2016, she will be subjected to this same level of stupidity.

The President is always so gracious and understanding. He could have pulled a McCain and had the woman removed under arrest.

Obama Masterfully Uses Code Pink Heckler To Make His Case That GITMO Must Be Closed

"Do you want to know why President Obama let her speak? This is going to come as a shock to the far left, but Obama agrees with her on the basic idea that GITMO must be closed. By letting the Code Pink protester ramble on, President Obama got his message about Congress needing to authorize the transfer of detainees out of GITMO on the frontpage of every website, and it will be the lead story all over cable news tonight."

  10. What ever happened to courtesy? What ever happened to good manners?

You better believe Republicans never tolerated such disrespect of Bush. Yet not only do they allow it, even encourage it, they are active participants. (Remember "You lie!"?)

Time to step up and forget the man and defend the office. Or next time a Republican is in the White House he'll be sure to get the same treatment.

I heard this on NPR when I was traveling today. The President was excellent and made some very strong statements (I really hope he follows through and that congress steps up to the plate).

The woman was freakin' annoying. She just wouldn't shut up, despite the fact that the President was more than fair. Not mention the fact that she sounded hysterical. She was definitely passionate, but should have been quiet after she had her first say. The President was spot on when he said that free speech was also letting other people speak while you listen. She definitely wasn't listening. And she should be happy that we have a President who gave her as much slack as he did.

That's not to say I don't agree with much of what she said, but there's a point when you're working against yourself and that point came when she held up his speech after the second time.

Where are the people outraged at what the Repubs have done to Americans? One of these days these Fox news watchers will realize that what the Repubs have done to, even those that vote for them, is way worse than what Fox news tells them what to be outraged about. I wait with baited breath.

A Code Pink heckler thought she was protesting the president, but in reality she helped President Obama make his case that GITMO must be closed immediately.

    Video:

Code Pink has been grossly misinformed, as has much of the far left, about the political maneuverings that have resulting in Congress blocking the closure of GITMO. They want to blame Obama, because as Benjamin put it, he is the commander in chief. Their childlike naive view of presidential power is that the president can do anything, but that’s not the way it works.

In March, Republicans admitted that they are the ones who are preventing GITMO civilian trials, yet groups like Code Pink continue to blame Obama.

The president needs funding in order to close the facility and move the detainees. Congress refuses to grant that funding. Obama has been down this road numerous times on GITMO. He gets everything ready to close the facility and move the detainees, only to see Congress refuses to fund it.

Obama handled the heckler beautifully, and the whole thing worked out to his advantage, because now the world will get to see who is really preventing the closure GITMO.

Since 2009, congressional Democrats have repeatedly screwed Obama by refusing to close GITMO. If Code Pink and the rest of the far left want to protest those responsible for GITMO still being open, they should start with Harry Reid.

I would not say that these far left groups have been "misinformed" so much as to say that they have not paid attention to what is going on. President Obama sought to close GITMO from the very beginning of his administration and the GOP in Congress refused. In fact, the GOP in Congress has simply "refused" to do anything about anything. The miracle of President Obama's first term is that the Affordable Care Act, even in its very diluted form, got passed by Congress. The far left in this country has had blinders on since January 2009 just as the GOP has been in perpetual tantrum mode since the same time.

‘The rhetorical end of the War on Terror’

Obama: "There is no justification beyond politics for Congress to prevent us from closing a facility that should never have been opened."

At least he is addressing these atrocities, the drones, the endless wars the killing of innocent civilians and the horrific torture chamber that is Guantanamo. Every time I heard him say "despot" or "despotic rule" in his speech I couldn't help but think he was alluding to the previous administration and those that put us in this position in the first place. I wish we would just pull out of every foreign country that we have bases and drones and armies in and just let folks work it out for themselves, but I guess what makes America so great and so safe and so wonderful is that we actually post ourselves around this world making sure that those that want to fuck with us don't always get the opportunity to do so. I like the fact that I can live here in a big house that would easily qualify as an apartment building for 30 folks in the third world. I admit it, I'm selfish, and I'm happy to be protected from the ugly that happens in some countries outside. I don't mean to seem insensitive, but really, just honest and thankful that I was born American and for all it means. This type of America probably won't last more than a few more generations, but while we have it I say let's enjoy it and really, we can't change things, so why even try.

I really do appreciate all that Medea Benjamin has done. Code Pink was about the only voice of dissent during the Bush administration, and no one was listening. But it is a common misconception that just because President Obama is the most powerful man in the United States and is our Commander in Chief that his will shall be done. If that were true we would have background checks for gun sales, a more universal health care program and Guantanamo Bay would have been closed a long time ago. He does not have dictatorial powers. It's that whole checks and balances thing. Unfortunately, the President's good intentions are being checked by a Corporate Congress that is not interested in the welfare of its citizens and is okay with the idea of torture. It is in no hurry to do the "right thing".

Okay, so I don't have a lot of time. But I was stuck in traffic today and got to hear 90% of President Obama's defense speech today. First of all, I can't think of another person on the planet who could give a speech about defense that I would listen to for more than two minutes, so that is amazing in and of itself.

But the real reason I felt compelled to write something

Although President Obama has received a lot of praise for his amazing speaking ability, I realized today that his greatest strength is his ability to LISTEN.

I mean REALLY listen. Even if he doesn't agree with you. Even if he is going to move in the opposite direction of what you are begging him too. He does HEAR us. ALL of us.

Today when a heckler pretty much just took over his speech, he actually stopped and LISTENED to what she had to say. (Of course, the lady didn't give him much choice, but still! lol)

I can't think of another President that has done that. It feels good to be HEARD even if I don't get what I want. And sometimes, even when I don't get what I want right away, President Obama will do something LATER that demonstrates that he THOUGHT about what he heard, and decided to change course.

The ability to LISTEN, combined with the ability to THINK, and when need be, APOLOGIZE and CHANGE COURSE makes President Obama one of the most amazing leaders I have been privileged to observe.

Love him or hate him, he is THINKING about big issues, he is trying to solve the tough problems, and he is humble enough to take his lumps and keep it moving anyway.

I can't think of many other politicians that have that particular combination of qualities . . . glad to have a second term of sanity in the White House.

The Last Word just did an excellent piece on how this speech defined the Obama Doctrine in comparison to the exploitation of fear used by GWBush.
The President took this opportunity to turn Medea's interruptions into a "teachable moment". What a brilliant man.

That Code Pink heckler acted just like an obnoxious tea-bagger, by trying to SHOUT down the president. Free speech works both ways. She wanted the president to listen to her, but she didn't want to listen to the president.

Some people are very passionate about the subject of drones, and closing Gitmo. But, drones and closing Gimto, are very low on the priority list for the majority of Americans. Most Americans' #1 concern is still the economy, not drones, or closing Gitmo.

President Obama understands those passions, but he is the president, and sometimes a president has to make serious decisions like a president, not an activist. I doubt any of these activists has any idea about presidential decision-making. The only thing most activists know anything about is knee-jerk reactions. A president shouldn't be that way. We already had a knee-jerk president in George W. Bush.

It is not President Obama's job to only focus on the passions of a small group of people.
