Republicans purposefully misquoted e-mails in order to smear Obama administration over its handling of Benghazi attack. Color me unsurprised.

Courtesy of CBS:

Republicans have charged that the State Department under Hillary Clinton was trying to protect itself from criticism. The White House released the real emails late Wednesday. Here's what we found when we compared them to the quotes that had been provided by Republicans.

One email was written by deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes.

On Friday, Republicans leaked what they said was a quote from Rhodes: "We must make sure that the talking points reflect all agency equities, including those of the State Department, and we don't want to undermine the FBI investigation."

But it turns out that in the actual email, Rhodes did not mention the State Department.

It read: "We need to resolve this in a way that respects all of the relevant equities, particularly the investigation."

Republicans also provided what they said was a quote from an email written by State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland.

The Republican version quotes Nuland discussing, "The penultimate point is a paragraph talking about all the previous warnings provided by the Agency (CIA) about al-Qaeda's presence and activities of al-Qaeda."

The actual email from Nuland says: "The penultimate point could be abused by members to beat the State Department for not paying attention to Agency warnings."

Yes Republicans please tell us again about the misinformation and outright lies coming out of this White House. After all you are such a trustworthy source!

Update: Right now the Republicans are DEMANDING that the IRS produce the names of the individuals who dared to scrutinize those Teabagger requests for 501's.

Well you know what? I think the White House should DEMAND to know who changed these e-mails and then leaked them to the press in order to smear the President!

Oh and yes, I ABSOLUTELY believe that somebody needs to go to jail for it as well!

The heck with jail, let's get going with some good ol' 'merican waterboarding... starting with Issa.

The Watergate "smoking gun" was an audio tape of Richard Nixon entering into a criminal conspiracy to prevent an investigation. Furthermore, another tape contained an 18 minute gap caused by multiple erasures. Most people assumed much worse happened in that gap. As wiki says "Nixon's political support evaporated" and Nixon resigned.

In this Benghazi matter, neither the leaked (distorted) e-mails nor the originals in any way approach Nixon's level of malfeasance.

    1. Anonymous10:42 AM

I meant to add to my Watergate "smoking gun" comment above the fact that even Richard Nixon was not stupid enough to commit his conspiracy to paper. Nixon believed his taping system was secret and might possibly have forgotten it was taping during the "smoking gun" conversation and whatever was said in the infamous 18 minute gap.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are not stupid. They would never be involved in a criminal conspiracy that involved a paper trail. (And, of course, both of them would reject a criminal conspiracy on the spot.)

Republicans have become the scum of the earth and I suspect are going to lose big time next election cycle. Some of their people are calling for them to stop their actions...but, they are not listening. Plus, they are making zero friends w/the black and brown population of the US.

The majority of them are assholes and racists!!!

    1. You have to play hard ball with assholes; there’s no choice. Sorry for the harsh words, but it’s the truth. And when you beat them down, don’t feel guilty and give them a hand up.

    2. Anonymous12:55 PM

So I guess that the majority of Democrats are lazy anti- American hippies? Oh and ugly tree hugging flag burning douchebags?

Oh and classy! Your comment is full of class, do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Anyway, was trying to prove a point that you can't say that the majority of Republicans are racists. I do not think the majority of Democrats are the stereotypes that I described, althought you are fitting in with the "douchebag" but im sure thats just you. Just trying to point out that you cannot put any one party in a stereotypical category. Anywhoo..your not to smart are ya? So I guess all democrats are dumb? See how silly that is!

    7. Anonymous8:10 PM

"Anyhoo.. your not to smart are ya?"

Recently, Daily Show host Jon Stewart has been going elbow-deep on the Obama administration over the current Scandalmania® that has gripped the political media. On Thursday night’s Hardball, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney responded to one of Stewart’s criticisms, that the President shouldn’t be finding out about the IRS and Associated Press investigations from news reports. Carney did his best to snuff out several of the flames on this Scandalabra™.

Matthews began by asking Jay about the rapidly-developing IRS scandal, strongly suggesting that more firings need to happen.

Carney responded by referring to President Obama’s comments on the matter, pointing out the firing of acting IRS Director Steven Miller, and the President’s instruction to gather all of the facts, adding that “he is outraged by this. You’ve heard him say that. And I can tell you, I know it’s true. His job as chief executive, as the President of the United States, is to take action when problems are discovered. To fix those problems. And that’s what he’s going to do.”

Matthews followed up on whether there would be more firings. “If the American people are filling out their taxes next year, know the IRS is still packed with the same people, it’s a problem. Isn’t it? Or is it?” Matthews asked.

“Well, Chris, I mean, if you’re suggesting that I should randomly fire people now,” Carney began.

“No, will he be happy if he doesn’t fire people?” Matthews interjected.

“We need to get all of the facts,” Carney answered, “and he has made clear that people who are responsible for failures will be held accountable. He will demand it. We need all the facts.”

Matthews then asked about the Associated Press leak investigation. “You weren’t informed at all what was happening at the Attorney General’s office with regard to his recusal of himself in this subpoenaing of all the records from the Associated Press,” Matthews said. “If this is the way the President operates, getting the news late, or getting it, as he says, in the newspapers, how can he be an aggressive chief executive?”

“Chris, I would turn this around,” Carney said. “Imagine what reporters would be saying, and people like you would be saying, if the President of the United States, and the folks in the White House, were being informed of, and engaged in, on a criminal investigation into a leak that presumably, because it’s a leak of classified information, has to do with a leak that emanated from somewhere within the federal government? That would be viewed as absolutely inappropriate, and in past histories of previous administrations beyond inappropriate. It is entirely appropriate that we are not informed of the progress or the methods used by federal prosecutors in criminal investigations.”

Carney also pointed out that, as part of the tension between protecting national security and protecting freedom of the press, the President “has long supported a media shield law.”

Pressed further, Carney told Matthews “I would ask you to consider the alternative to that and to, as you know, because you’ve covered this and have been, you know, around here for a long time, you know what past history here tells us about involvement of White Houses in criminal investigations led by the Justice Department.”

Matthews then got to Jon Stewart’s bit.

GOP Congressman Defends DOJ Surveillance: ‘They Are Doing What We Asked Them To Do’

In an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) threw cold water on hopes that the Justice Department’s surveillance of Associated Press reporters’ phone records could lead to legislation preventing similar incidents in the future. Gowdy noted that the surveillance occurred in no small part because Republicans demanded such an investigation in 2012:

GOWDY: Greta, you were an attorney. There are lots of privileges — husband-wife, priest-penitent, attorney-client, none of them unqualified. So when you have a major national security leak, which is a compelling issue, and you juxtapose that with the right of the media to do its job and provide oversight, there’s a conflict. And there’s no federal statute on point. But the Supreme Court has said if there is a compelling interest, which there certainly is in national security cases, and the information is relevant which it has to be to justify a subpoena, and you have no alternative means of getting the information, then the Department of Justice had no choice. . . .

Think back a year ago. We had the attorney general and other Department of Justice employees, and we grilled them over national security leaks. And here they are doing what we asked them to do, investigate the leak.

Benghazi Backfires on Republicans as Democrats Eviscerate Issa and the GOP

The GOP’s Benghazi house of cards has collapsed, and now Democrats are eviscerating Darrell Issa and his fellow Republicans for overreaching and politicizing a tragedy.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform blasted Rep. Darrell Issa for going back on his word to hold a public hearing with the Accountability Review Board that examined the security situation in Benghazi.

    Cummings said,

Today’s subpoena is a stark example of extreme Republican overreach and the shameful politicization of this tragedy. Chairman Issa’s accusations keep getting shot down one by one, but he simply resorts to even more extreme measures. After falsely accusing former Secretary Clinton of lying to Congress, falsely accusing the White House of deliberately misleading the American people, and falsely accusing the military of withholding critical assistance on the night of the attacks, the Chairman is now accusing Admiral Mullen, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Ambassador Pickering, a seven-time U.S. ambassador, of being complicit in a cover-up.

Both Admiral Mullen and Ambassador Pickering have made clear that they stand ready and willing to testify at a public hearing to respond directly to these reckless accusations, but Chairman Issa is now imposing new conditions to keep them behind closed doors. The Chairman should reverse his decision, conduct a responsible and bipartisan investigation, and allow the American people to hear directly from these officials.

As the ranking member on the committee, Rep. Cummings is leading the Democratic pushback against Rep. Issa, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and other Republicans who have politicized Benghazi. There is no cover-up, but Republicans keep moving the goalposts in their never ending quest to find the scandal that never was.

A backlash is growing against these relentless Republican attempts to drum up an Obama scandal. While Darrell Issa chases conspiracy theories while the walls are crumbling around the Republican Party. Republicans have politicized a tragedy to the point where it has become an insult to the victims, and for that there will be a price to pay.

Gallup recently concluded that the number of Americans who are paying attention to the Benghazi and IRS stories is well below average. The Republican habit of looking for a scandal in everything President Obama does has resulted in most Americans tuning out their cries of wolf.

Instead of being the scandal that would bring down Obama, Benghazi is turning into another reason for many Americans to not trust, or vote Republican.

IRS Official Lois Lerner Called Lawyer To Plant Targeting Question

  12. That's all the gop do...throw their slimy sneaky lying bullshit around. I don't believe a word they say. They are pathetic in or out of office.

They are now bragging about not governing again. They want to continued to smear our fine President, his family, Dems and his cabinet without any proof whatsoeva .

Any national party that would hold a meeting about creating underhanded, diabolical plots, obstruction and discussing what lies are to be told, during President Obama inauguration no less, to our first African-American President, who was honestly elected, no doubt, is nothing but pure evil.

Don't feed the trolls!
It just goes directly to their thighs.
