Scientists invent female version of Viagra, then consider watering down its effects due to fear that increased female sexuality might result in societal harm.

Courtesy of Seattle Pi:

Women looking to get their freak back may soon be able to pop a new breed of lust drug: Lybrido.

But scientists developing the desire pill sometimes called “female Viagra” confided in one writer an unusual worry. They fear the libido-booster may work too well.

(And the problem with that is …?)

Journalist Daniel Bergner, whose story on the still-being-developed wonder drug was published last week in the New York Times Magazine, says researchers worry about creating an orgasm-hungry nympho. Yeah, the author expressed surprise at that, too.

“More than one adviser to the industry told me that companies worried about the prospect that their study results would be too strong, that the F.D.A. would reject an application out of concern that a chemical would lead to female excesses, crazed binges of infidelity, societal splintering,” Bergner writes.

So drug companies may actually temper the potency of these easy-to-swallow menthol-flavored passion-stimulants, lest these crazy sex-having females have, you know, crazy amounts of sex. Whenever they feel like it, which would, presumably, be way more often.

Okay could somebody remind me if there were any similar concerns expressed about the introduction of Viagra? All I remember is trumpets blowing and everything but a damn ticker tape parade for the drug company that put it on the market.

"Oh my God!" They said, "Now old men can get boners! This is the greatest invention since sliced bread. Which we don't even need anymore because now we can slice it with out boners!"

Look I have been married....a couple of times, and if this product had been available back then I would have gladly bought it in bulk.

It does not make any difference how good you are in the sack, after working all day, making dinner for the family, and then cleaning up the mess left by the kids, a lot of women are just not as ready to rock their spouse's world between the sheets most nights as they were when they started dating. (And before anybody jumps down my throat you should know that I also worked and made dinner, actually more nights than my wife did. Admittedly I was not so good at the cleaning.)

However the fact is that many men, ESPECIALLY conservative men, fear female sexuality and would not know what to do with a sexually aggressive woman if she bit them in the ass. (And after taking this drug she just might do that!)

Well as a progressive male, in relatively good shape, I say "What's good for the gander, is good for the goose. Bring it on!"

"Societal splintering" my ass! The only thing that might get splintered is a few male egos, and I don't see that as necessarily a bad thing.

Boy... I have been wishing that type of pill for years!!! Husband has his blue pill, but nothing for me, and I feel really bad about it. I love him to pieces, but could care less about the sex part, and that is not right.

Wondering, if these scientists were all male or if they had ANY females on their team, and what the opinion of the females would have been.

Actually your Dr can prescribe you viagra now, it also works for women. It just sends blood rushing to the groin, and it has the same affect on women, you can kind of equate the cliterus to a penis.

Ditto for me, but what would stop someone from taking a couple of the pills instead of just one, kind of like guys do with Viagra? Kind of stupid and short sighted if you ask me. As for Viagra use for females, unless I read some peer review studies and rigorous testing, i am not ingesting anything that may raise my blood pressure.

All those products raise the blood pressure in men , so of course they will raise the blood pressure in women.
BTW viagra can be prescribed to women, but we tend not to ask.

How do these bastards get away with this crap? ----Bet they'll find a way not to cover this drug on insurance. Talk about social engineering. The next fucking thing you know they'll be binding women's feet again and drowning "wanton" women in ponds who have too many orgasms. If we drown we were virtuous--if we don't they'll deny us birth control then eventually burn us at the stake.

    Rant over.

I totally agree, Grphyen. This country just CANNOT HANDLE women being in charge of their own bodies and sexual desires. Next stop: anarchy!!
I say bring it on, too.

  7. JFC Gryph, if you ever get tired of living in Alaska, I've got room for you in central Illinois. I'll certainly never meet such a progressive, equality-minded man here.

There was a dopaminergic anti-depressant developed in the 70's called Survector. It worked so well that people experienced spontaneous orgasms. Not surprisingly, it was never approved in the US.

  10. We'll probably be able to get it full strength over the counter in Mexico. That's the way it usually works.

Besides the published ridiculous responses from the (male) manufacturer - I don't even know where to start on YOUR comments, Gryphen.
You really sound like a (unfortunately fairly common) regular old 'progressive', male-chauvinist dick. (Excuse the language)
You really have to give some thought on what you just put out there.
Seriously, I have to give some thought on my response on your comments. If I care to give them at all.
Especially you saying 'as a (progressive) male in pretty good shape' - is this an advertisement to your willingness to f*ck any horny woman? I don't get it.
I'm leaving your two marriages alone - I certainly don't know what happened there, nor do I judge. (Your certainly got one dynamite daughter out of one, that's for sure!)
But to have you make the statement you would buy this 'in bulk' certainly makes it sound like you put blame on both for not wanting to have sex with you.
    Really?
You've got some work to do, my friend.

Wow...my blood boiled reading this comment that could ONLY come from someone who is a complete and utter TURD.

Whoever the hell "Scruffer" is, I suspect its a very cowardly individual, who is too chickenshit to make such a comment to anyone's FACE, but hides at home chuckling like a deranged idiot, typing out hateful little rants that will never have to be answered for.

I too was struck by the "buying in bulk" comment. My first thought was, "now you can have sex with your wife anytime you want and she'll even think it was her idea!"

It sounded wrong on so many levels: "fixing" something wrong with your wife, medicating your wife to giving you sex---I'm not saying you meant these things, but this is classic "male speak" that reduces women to objects to be possessed.

Look, I'm not out of charity with the idea of female Viagra; I'm 50 years old. You can probably guess where I am in my journey with sex. I'd probably view it as a more effective "extra glass of wine."

However, I despise the idea that "sex empowers women." Sure, it does, and HAS for thousands of years. It was the only way a woman could get power. You married a man with power or became his mistress. So color me reactionary if I'd rather see women take power in a way they haven't had for thousands of years.

Also, men do not have the greatest track record when it comes to women under the influence. Maybe we should not put the most powerful drug out there. Maybe women should retain some control over their situation. I can already see the rape defense: she took female viagra! I have a feeling the mentol flavor is there to try to reduce the odds of it being given to a girl without her knowledge, but still? There's enough messaging out there now that makes girls believe if they aren't "sexy" they are worth less. I worry about them abusing this in ways that reinforce their worth only as a sex object.

Sure, it'll be by prescription only, just like Oxycontin, so I'm sure the risk of getting it illegally will be very, very low. ;)

Menthol? We seriously need more female scientists! Screw mint - give me chocolate anyday! While they're at it, how about a bacon flavored birth control pill for men? And for RWNJ males, a trans urethral ultrasound before intercourse.

I'm all for "leveling the playing field" for people who feel they need "chemical romance", but this kind of kills any type of spontaneity, seduction, foreplay, and fun out of sex.

  14. If women wanting more sex means one of them might want to have it with me, then I am all for it.

I know that is not the most enlightened comment, but I am pretty lonely.

This subject makes me think back to the comment that went viral:

"If men could get pregnant, there'd be an abortion clinic next to every Starbucks in America."

I was happy to finally become mature enough to get past all the silly crap a teenaged boy has going through his head, at 19.

Sadly, it appears there are many men, mostly those drawn to politics, who are doomed to never grow up and have a well adjusted viewpoint of women.

  17. Jeez that is lame. Some of us around here benefit from women who are less inhibited.

This is so ridiculous it made me laugh.
I never knew we women held such power and induced such fear in men.
I think the real problem is these men are afriad they won't be able to satisfy us even WITH the enhancers lol. Can't you hear women across the globe ? "Look, Hal, this is supposed to make it EASIER for you to pleasure me." No honey, not there..here...now now .."

Anyways, it is needed for some women . Some medications suppress a woman's libido, so this will help them feel like old times. Also, too, I remember how great sex was for me when I was pregnant - the extra hormones really helped me, if you get my drift. I wonder if this drug works in a similar way. If so, YEAH!!!

THis makes me think of medieval times and how women were burned as witches.
Did you know where the depiction of witches riding brooms comes from?
Women used to place a psychedelic fungus from rye bread or other plants on sticks or broom handles, and rub it against their vaginas (the drug was absorbed through the mucous membranes of the vagina). The women then had "trips" and were high for hours. Some said they felt like they were flying. If an outsider caught them, they looked like crazy women humping a broomstick........and the rest is history. Witches and broomsticks

Marinol was invented as a way to deliver the "benefits" of cannabis without the side effects of "getting-high"--because making someone "feel good" is not an official medical purpose. HOWEVER, if you can create a pill and charge $$$ for it, then all of a sudden it's perfectly fine to make & take the drug that just makes you feel good.

I have a female friend who has taken male viagra. Said it's AMAZING. Me, I, trying to find the opposite. I have sex everyday with my husband and still crave it. Like, David Ducovny style. Though I am 39.

I'm pretty sure these scientists are worried about this pill being used as a date-rape drug, not some weird aversion to female sexuality. After all, if they hated women being sexually active then why would they spend their time trying to develop this pill?
