Getting a big orange Boehner in Alaska. I wonder if I should consult a doctor about this? Also Lisa Murkowski comes in favor of marriage equality. Update!

Courtesy of Politico:

House Speaker John Boehner is hunting for cash on America’s last frontier.

The top Republican in Congress is due in Alaska for a fundraiser early next month, according to an invitation obtained by POLITICO.

Okay just let me provide for you the definition for "desperate." It is flying ALL THE WAY to Alaska looking for money from a Republican party that is essentially in splinters in a place where the third largest political party is dedicated to seceding from the union.

But wait, there's more.

He’ll headline a July 2 event at a private home in Anchorage to collect donations for the Boehner for Speaker joint fundraising committee, which benefits his campaign, PAC, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Ohio Republican Party.

The invitation asks for a suggested contribution of between $500 and $1,000, with donors of $2,500 or more gaining access to a photo reception. The maximum acceptable donation is $52,600.

There are a few boldface names on the host committee, topped by Congressman Don Young, the irascible longtime lawmaker and champion of earmarks who has clashed with Boehner in the past.

Also on the host list are two prominent Alaska Republicans both named Dan Sullivan: one is the mayor of Anchorage, the other is the head of the state Department of Natural Resources and a former state attorney general.

The latter Sullivan is a potential candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2014, and may join a growing GOP primary field for the race against Democratic Sen. Mark Begich. Already in the race are Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, who announced his campaign Tuesday, and tea party activist Joe Miller.

Former Anchorage Mayor George Wuerch and former Alaska GOP Chairman Randy Ruedrich are on the invitation as well.

Hmm, now it seems that there might be  prominent political name left off of that invitation. Now who could that be?

Yeah Boehner might be desperate for money, but, unlike Fox News, he's not THAT desperate.

Another prominent name not mentioned on the guest list is Lisa Murkowski, who just came out in support of gay marriage:

With the notion of marriage – an exclusive, emotional, binding ‘til death do you part’ tie – becoming more and more an exception to the rule given a rise in cohabitation and high rates of divorce, why should the federal government be telling adults who love one another that they cannot get married, simply because they happen to be gay? I believe when there are so many forces pulling our society apart, we need more commitment to marriage, not less.

This thinking is consistent with what I hear from more and more Alaskans especially our younger generations. Like the majority of Alaskans, I supported a constitutional amendment in 1998 defining marriage as only between a man and a woman, but my thinking has evolved as America has witnessed a clear cultural shift. Fifteen years after that vote, I find that when one looks closer at the issue, you quickly realize that same sex unions or civil marriages are consistent with the independent mindset of our state – and they deserve a hands-off approach from our federal policies.

You know if Boehner were smart he WOULD beg Murkowski  to attend this fundraiser, because the future of politics in Alaska is certainly not with Randy Reuderich and Don Young.

Update: Well this is certainly not going to help Murkowski get invited to any big GOP fundraisers:

You would think Sarah Palin would be the leader of the GOP in Ak after all she has done.

OT If Palin is branding her political (ruse) product as flauntingly fecund, won't she be required to prove that still holds true and is not some throw back to when she birthed P.I.G.P. ?

Of course Palin isn't invited, she wouldn't part with a big enough check (or any check at all I'm sure) to go to Boehner's campaign.

I'm guessing who's house this is going to be held at. My money on is the long time Murkowski friend and behind the scenes political pusher - Bob Penney.

Why would anyone support Boehner who has been the very worst Speaker of the House and nothing more than an obstructionist He is the main part of the reason Congress has a 10% approval rating.

The orange guy is a jerk and doesn't represent the majority of Americans across the nation. The Republican party in Alaska is as corrupt as Boehner!

Lisa Murkowski has written an excellent statement. She was clear, concise, and admitted that she has evolved, in a good way, from her narrow minded attitudes in 1998. Her statement will help encourage others to be more inclusive towards minorities in our society. She may just be a "real girl", after all. A small step for Lisa, is a giant leap for mankind!

    Great job, Senator Murkowski!

I'm not giving Lisa too much credit for "seeing the light" so to speak. She may very well personally feel this way, or not. What Lisa is great at is moving with the political winds - at just the right moment. The Supreme Court will strike down DOMA. The GOP is losing votes over this issue. Lisa just comes out looking good, gaining votes, and can still appease her corporate donors when her vote is needed.

She still voted against the Violence Against Women Act. She's a turd, and I can't believe that so many Alaskans were duped into her write in campaign.

A Republican Senator Made The Best Pro-Gay Marriage Statement We've Seen From A Major Public Official

You can't be for liberty and against gay marriage.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) announced her support for gay marriage this morning and her full statement on why is well worth a read.

The statement is forceful, arguing that marriage equality is needed to protect personal freedom and stop the government from overreaching.

This is the key paragraph (emphasis added):

First, this is a personal liberty issue and has to do with the most important personal decision that any human makes. I believe that, as Americans, our freedoms come from God and not government, and include the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What could be more important to the pursuit of happiness than the right to choose your spouse without asking a Washington politician for permission? If there is one belief that unifies most Alaskans – our true north – it is less government and more freedom. We don’t want the government in our pockets or our bedrooms; we certainly don’t need it in our families.

Murkowski goes on to say that allowing gays into marriage will make it a stronger institution that does more to promote family stability. That's a common refrain from Republicans who support gay marriage, and a relatively safe way to argue for gay marriage without declaring war on social conservatism.

But in making the "liberty" argument, and saying we don't need the government in families, Murkowski is making a much bolder argument, and going for a big break with social conservatives. Murkowski is siding with those who argue that marriage should be an institution that exists for the benefit of individuals, to be used to form the kinds of families they see fit.

Social conservatives tend to argue that marriage is a civic institution that should be used to promote the formation of a specific kind of family. That is, they think we do need the government in our families.

I think Murkowski's individualist approach is right. But it's going to be a major point of contention between her and social conservatives in the Republican party.

The host of Boehner in Alaskar had better have LOTSA booze available because he is known for loving his alcohol (and cigarettes)!

It says everything that Sarah and Todd Palin are NOT included/invited. Just goes to show Alaskans that U.S. Congress members see them as nothing more than embarrassments.

I don't expect Lisa to be at any fundraisers with Ruedrich or federal Reps any time soon. To a man they shafted her not so long ago before they lost control of their own party. She has no need to be seen in public with that bunch of losers.

I'm not buying her statement about gay marriage on face value but I don't much care why she made it. Maybe it's a question of "cherchez le gay" but I still don't care. All that matters is that it's a yes vote.

That should be a signal to the rest if the country what the folks in AK think of the Tundra Turd now.

The big orange Boehner problem is easy to fix, when watching porn, switch the snack of choice from cheeto's to popcorn.

Did I read something wrong or am I thinking of someone else? I recall reading that Lisa did a flip flop on Gay Marriage after hearing her kids think it's no big deal, then vote against it?

    President's Tweet is priceless!
