The death of journalist Michael Hastings. IS this bothering anybody else, or is it just me?

Okay now if that video did not bother you enough there is also this:

WikiLeaks says journalist Michael Hastings, 33, killed in a fiery crash early Tuesday morning after his Mercedes plowed into a tree near the corners of Melrose and Highland Avenues, had contacted the organization hours earlier to say he was the subject of an FBI investigation.

The tweet, issued Wednesday to WikiLeaks' 1.9 million followers, reads, "Michael Hastings contacted WikiLeaks lawyer Jennifer Robinson just a few hours before he died, saying that the FBI was investigating him."

Here's the tweet:

Look I don't want to turn into Alex Jones here, but this thing really stinks and I cannot be the only person smelling it.

But then another part of me thinks that if you were going to murder a high profile journalist, WHY would you do it in such a suspicious manner? But then again the guy had no lack of enemies, both within the government and out, who would have liked to see him dead.

I don't know, I'm just saying that I am having some difficulty digesting this as an accident.

Maybe I'm just paranoid.

You're only paranoid if it is not true.....given the history of this country, especially of late, not a completely unfounded suspicion.....

Wasn't he loathed by some other journalists? He was not so popular with his peers for McChrystal. His true love died in Iraq. On the rebound he marries Elise Jordan, May 21, 2011. Check out her credentials.

I would like to know his day and evening and what he was doing before this crash. Just the facts.

It was no accident I'm sure. I've been doing a lot of reading lately and certain people in the government and the intelligence agencies have certainly had a number of people eliminated in the past. I won't even start naming names and it isn't being like Alex Jones, they've been doing it since these agencies started and certain evil people have taken full advantage of the secrecy and the cover ups. It is a sad world we live in.

New York Magazine columnist Frank Rich on Palin's return to Fox News:

Mama Grizzly herself returned to her former employer Fox News this week after a mere five months apart. Are you surprised that Palin and Ailes got back together so fast? And who needs whom more?
Fox News still triumphs easily over MSNBC and CNN in the ratings, but its party is out of power, and when was the last time you heard its prime-time stars Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly make any news or even any noise? Ailes needs a freak show to get people excited about walking into his tent, and no one does that better than Palin. As for Palin, what else does she have to do? Celebrity and television airtime are her oxygen, far more than her political or ideological pursuits, and having exhausted her careers in both reality television and electoral politics, it was either Fox News or a Broadway stint in Chicago singing “We Both Reached for the Gun.”

"Hard enough crash and they sure do. I have posted on here previously about the big-rig annihilating a pickup right in front of me on the interstate – the engine from the pickup went about 100 yards down the road. Compared to what I have seen of older cars hitting trees, the Mercedes held up remarkably well...But really, sideways into a tree and all bets are off.

Motor mounts in modern cars are designed to shear off. Typically, in a front end collision the motor will go UNDER the passenger cabin, but in a sideways crash like this, right out of the car and down the road is the result."

Yes, fishy. But I'm wondering how anyone could have possibly orchestrated a crash like that. It happened around 4am, on major surface streets in Hollywood. Even at 4am I doubt the streets were totally empty. Not in Hollywood.
Was another car on his tail at that hour? If brake lines were cut couldn't he have engineered a less violent stop? Did somebody slip him drugs? Every scenario I can imagine would leave a trail of some sort, one would think.

Some people have been blaming Hastings for reporting about McChrystal's bad mouthing the president. That would make it McChrystal's fault, not Hastings for reporting something that uniformed soldiers are not supposed to do, namely publicly criticize their Commander in Chief. I hope that it was only a tragic accident. It would be scary if that was the treatment that a reporter got for telling the truth.

If he had committed suicide, I'd be much more suspicious. If the coroner ruled it to be a self-inflicted suicide after he was found with two gunshots to the head (yes, two), I'd be even more suspicious. And if he had been reporting on the CIA trafficking in drugs at the same time of his death, then I'd think there was strong evidence of a conspiracy. See, all of this actually happened with Gary Webb, A Pulitzer-winning journalist who wrote a series of articles titled "Dark Alliance. He was ostracized and considered toxic by other media Fter he investigated links between Nicaraguan smugglers and CIA.

So yes, sometimes there are reasons to think conspiracy is involved. But we know no facts about this to begging to suspect that... yet. There are too many other more efficient ways to neutralize an enemy than a perfectly planned car crash. But I will definitely be keeping my ear to the ground, because I know that his peers that Philip Munger mentioned above will do their due diligence in checking it out.

But don't cry "Wolf" until there's something more solid to go on. And then when there is, don't stop screaming until something is done. It's a crime that most people don't know every goddam detail in the series of incidents about Gary Webb. He was a real journalist, and a true hero.

Did the car just "blow up" like you insist they do? Did you need an expert to tell you that you had just witnessed a car crash? Are you an expert?

      http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2013-06-19/news/os-fatal-crash-turnpike-20130619_1_fiery-crash-ford-van-beachline

Etc. I live in the LA area, what might be the firery car crash capital of the world. Sadly, these accidents just aren't that unusual. Cars don't "just explode," but if they hit a stationary object at high speed, bad things happen. I once heard first-hand reports of a horrific broadside collision in my home town: that car that was hit didn't explode, but people who heard it maybe 1/2 mile away said they thought a bomb went off.

So, yeah, can we hear more about what Hastings was doing in Hollywood prior to 4a, and the accident itself, before we get out the tinfoil hats?

Hearing the part about the engine makes me think that he was going at a high rate of speed. The sudden impact could certainly send the engine flying. I've been told that the engine bolts are made to break in a significant force impact, so the engine submarines under the car instead of into your lap.

Ruling out a priori the possibility of foul play would be as logically fallacious as asserting its presence. But that’s why — as Hastings’ and my mutual friend Ali Gharib told me today — what we really need in a case like this is a Mike Hastings. The kind of reporter who would not jump wildly to conclusions, but who would follow up the incident by asking the right people the right questions, including difficult questions. Hastings would not speculate; he would apply parsimony and skepticism and — above all — ground any public claims in documentation and evidence. Indeed, as Gharib quipped, even when reviewing (scathingly) the film “Zero Dark Thirty,” Hastings cited sources and documents.

Michael Hastings' Body Identified; LAPD Says No Signs Of Foul Play

The Los Angeles coroner's office said Thursday that it has formally identified the late journalist Michael Hastings as the victim in a fiery car crash that took place on Tuesday.

It had been widely presumed that the body that had been found in the fatal accident in the city's Hancock Park district was that of Hastings, who died at 33. Though reports said that the body had been burned beyond recognition, the Associated Press said that the coroner had matched his fingerprints to prints that the FBI had on file.

Since Hastings' tragic death, a variety of conspiracy theories have emerged, suggesting that his uncompromising reporting and clashes with powerful government figures had made him a target. However, the Los Angeles Police Department told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday that there did not appear to be any signs of foul play in the accident. The Times said that officials were trying to figure out whether there had been a mechanical failure in the car.

Once the engine separates from its mounts, you're looking at a broken fuel line. This turns your safe German luxury car into a potential napalm bomb. If he hit the tree in an off-axis angle at a high enough rate of speed, the G-forces would send the engine right through the grill and leave behind an explosive device just waiting for an ignition source.

You know those NHTSA videos of car crashes? They are done with no fuel in the vehicles.

I was in a DUI crash where I flipped my car. I noticed a small flame coming from under the hood. I got out as fast as I could. Within two minutes that car was completely engulfed. Within ten minutes nothing was left but a smoking frame.

If this guy was drunk and didn't get out in time he would have burned alive. That will show in an autopsy. A car to go from a minor crash to fully engulfed in flames is not uncommon. But that's the beauty of conspiracy theories. Make the common a sinister government plot.

My first thought was that it was some retribution hit from McChrystal or some associated SF types. Then I realized I read way too many spy novels, and have no idea what actually happened

But they may also have a hard time reconciling it with Hastings' Buzzfeed postmortem on l'affaire generale last November, titled "The Sins of General David Petraeus":

'More so than any other leading military figure, Petraeus’ entire philosophy has been based on hiding the truth, on deception, on building a false image...it’s not what actually happens that matters — it’s what you can convince the public it thinks happened....'

Most of the stories written about him fall under what we hacks in the media like to call "a blow job."

After detailing the general's professional sins—taking false credit for the pacification of Iraq, glossing over ethnic cleansing there, overselling the prospect of success in Afghanistan—Hastings asks:

'How did Petraeus get away with all this for so long? Well, his first affair — and one that matters so much more than the fact that he was sleeping with a female or two — was with the media.'

It makes no sense that he would be killed in such a manner, we know the car was not stationary, we know it was speeding down the street, if they had the means to make it crash at 100mph why have it blow up? At that speed you are dead no matter what, adding an explosion would just bring unwanted attention...

Also as a person who has been around enough car explosions (IED and carbombs) they look nothing like this and chemical/forensic investigations always find something.

If they were in the business of executing hits on troublesome American citizens within US borders, this guy would be way far down the list

I remember seeing photographs from an accident last fall on an older, curvy section of highway on Long Island. The young driver was going way too fast and spun out of control into the wide, treed median. The car hit a tree so hard that it completely split in half, ejecting everyone.

The driver survived with injuries but four passengers were killed instantly.

Sometimes an accident is just an accident, tragic as it may be.

Careful....sounding an awful lot like right-wingers when Breitbert died. People die...and out on the streets in wee early a.m. could be impaired. We're not all like Sarah - some of us believe in coincidences. Or, if not a coincidence, sometimes those who live hard and take mental and physical risks for their jobs, also do so in their lives (and, sadly, their deaths).

Little rule of thumb? If someone prefaces a comment with "not to be racist" you can be sure they're going to say something racist.
If you have to preface something by saying you don't want to sound crazy like Alex Jones, chances are you're going to say something crazy like Alex Jones.

I worked with a student a few years ago who thought he knew everything already, even though he was only in 5th grade. When he wanted to question something I was teaching him, he often started with, "No offense, but..."

I explained to him that, if he had to preface his question with those words, he WAS being offensive and he knew it. After a few reminders, he stopped doing it.

In the James Gandolfini death the media is already asking and retracing what he did the day he died. His wife is mentioned and flying to Italy. What was Michael Hastings doing prior to his death? His wife is on her way to LA?

My Sister used to live at the corner of Franklin & Highlands in LA that is just down the road from the crash site, This area is ripe with criminal activity and everbody has surveilence cameras, Do we have any IMers from LA ? They should do a door to door to see if anybody caught anything on film.

Here is a more likely scenario:

EASY TO MAKE HASTINGS CAR ACCELERATE AUTOMATICALLY TO KILL HIM IN “ACCIDENT”…

This post outlines a plausible scenario in which Michael Hastings might have been murdered by the government altering the software in his car and auto accelerating his vehicle to his death (corroborated by computer scientists, hackers and a DARPA Program Manager).

  58. My first thought when I heard he died in a car crash was, hmmm I would like to know about that crash. Now that I have more information it is a bit suspicious and we will never know if it was just a horrible accident or something else. Are we turning into Mexico now, killing off journalists? Some of us lived through the JFK, RLK, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X assassinations and know that yes there are conspiracies and yes there are evil people who will kill someone for retaliation and to send a message. We only have to look at our own history and the cover ups to keep us from finding out the truth.
