777 jetliner crash lands in San Fransisco. Update!

Courtesy of CBS News:

An Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul, South Korea, with more than 300 people aboard crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, littering the runway with debris, and forcing passengers to jump down the emergency inflatable slides to safety.

San Francisco Fire Department told CBS News that two people were killed. At least 73 people have been taken to area hospitals for injuries, some critically. San Francisco General said they have received 10 of the critically injured, including two children.

A spokesperson for San Francisco General said most, if not all, of the passengers taken to the hospital are Korean-speaking. We are working to get interpreters for them," she said, "but they are quite critically injured so there is not a lot of discussion with them at this time."

Early reports indicate that Asiana Airlines Flight 214 made a hard landing, with the tail of the plane striking the runway and breaking off.

The resulting fire sent black smoke billowing into the air, visible for miles.

I believe this  is the first serious jetliner crash we have had in this country for about ten years.

For somebody like me who hates to fly anyhow this is the stuff of nightmares.

Update: Here is video footage taken minutes after it landed. Update 2: There are sixty passengers unaccounted for. This could be very, very bad.

Update 3: Last fatal crash in America was in 2009. I stand corrected.

Early reports do NOT indicate terrorism.

I feel so badly for those killed and injured. But you know my second thought was that the right (Beck) will use this as "God is speaking to SF and CA. Stop gay marriages!" fodder. Can't you just hear it?

Grow up. No one's EVER said shit like that. On the otherhand, the left HAS. The left used the hurricane near Tampa to spit on the RNC. smh at your hypocrisy

Before telling other people to "grow up", check your facts, you stupid Palin cultist. The right routinely says things like that all the time (Pat Robertson, congresspersons, etc.). A five second google search would have told you that and stopped you making a damn fool of yourself again.

And your stupid "smh" is getting old. Like I told you before, you cretinous drooling dolt, shaking your head so often is clearly causing you brain damage.

Grow up and get off the internet if you have nothing intelligent to say, and you never do.

Flight 214 Passenger: 'It Was Surreal'

NBC Bay Area spoke to Flight 214 passenger Benjamin Levy:

We were approaching perfectly well, but we were too low, when the pilot realized it, he put some more gas to correct it, but it was too late, so we hit the runway pretty bad, and we started going up in the air again, and we landed pretty hard," he told the network. ""It was a bit surreal...a lot of people screaming, not believing what was happening."

I would've peed myself. I already freak out when a plane dips low and your stomach jumps 100 feet.

Though I will say, despite that, I enjoy plane landings, especially ones where you feel the plane wont stop on the runway then it feels like you stop on a dime. Im weird. And I mean no disrespect with that statement.

I hope that the number of casualties is kept to a minimum, and that the injured recover quickly.

But I must point out that this would never have happened if we had a U.S.-born common-sense conservative in the White House, and/or if the plane was landing in a city not so notorious for its sodomy, perversion, and anti-firearm attitudes.

I hope the loads of smoke don't present huge problems in the coming weeks. Thats the true concern in my mind.

If only the good married people of San Francisco had come out to meet the plane with their guns blazing...

The guide light (or 'glide path") that a pilot uses to guide the descent of the plane was not working on that runway. Or so I read on the aviation-blog sites. And that makes perfect sense -- that a pilot could be a little low in his approach without that tool.

Could it be deferred maintenance due to sequestration cuts?

Are pilots made to rely too much on these gizmos and forget what its like to use their own judgements and make timely corrections? Do they lose their innate abiltie that made them pilots in the first place? Or does getting to rely on these gizmos make even mediocre pilots good enough to fly commercial? Like using a surgeon, I want the best pilots practicing, not average who need the bells and whistles to fly.

The guide light system was down, but not needed yesterday as it was a perfectly clear day.

Someone said the plane was landing too low and the pilot, upon realizing this, sped up with hopes of flying higher. I wonder what that pilot's record with flying INTO San Fran is. It's a different airport given the water surrounding it.

Sucks all around. Makes me think of the Hudsen River story with super pilot.

The percentage so far of those seriously injured or dead is amazingly low (17%), considering the nature of the crash. Didn't the hospital spokeswoman say they have now accounted for the missing 60 or so? I'm sure we will find out more about the remaining 58% who came out with less serious injuries. I'm sure some of this will change, though - if you have smoke inhalation or burns you might survive but then do worse the next few days.
Of course the low percentage of critical and dead doesn't matter to the families who were affected.
I am sad, but proud of our first responders and public servants who are once again, heroic and selfless.

The last footage I saw was surreal. About three quarters of the jet's roof is missing and there's a sea of flame retardant foam, passengers walking around stunned and in shock. They're still reporting two fatalities )so far) and all passengers accounted for. Hard to fathom considering the wreckage.

I wonder if that picture was taken after the firefighters used their equipment to pull the roof back.

Thankfully, all on that flight are now accounted for.
