As a Democrat I cannot believe I am saying this but if you live in New York City Anthony Weiner does not deserve your vote. Update!

I watched this press conference yesterday in an actual rage. So much so that I yelled at my TV.

And the part that inspired my outburst was when Huma stepped up the microphone, and with a quivering voice told the people of New York that she had forgiven her husband, and that she supported his candidacy. At that point I started yelling, "Don't do that! Don't support that liar and try to cover for his inadequacies. You're better than that, and he does not deserve to have you humiliate yourself in order to help him get a job that he is unfit to hold."

Now let tell you why I was so upset.

During that press conference Weiner admitted that he continued sexting and sending pictures of his junk even AFTER he had been forced to resign for that very same behavior.

I work in the mental health community, and THAT is the sign of an exhibitionist with virtually NO impulse control, and one who receives a great deal of sexual gratification from having women see his penis. Furthermore there is every reason to believe that if he is not currently engaging in the same type of behavior, that he soon will be.

During the conference Huma revealed that they had attended therapy together to save their marriage, but there was NO indication that Weiner had received counseling for his sexual addiction. Therefore in my opinion there is simply NO way that he has put a stop to it on his own. At least not for long.

So no, Anthony Weiner should simply accept that his life as a politician is over and move on to the next phase. A phase which I absolutely do not believe can start until AFTER he receives some counseling for his compulsions.

I have a great deal of respect for Huma, but you think that this is the last time we will see her shamed by the antics of her husband then you are sorely mistaken, and she, and ALL women, deserve better than that.

Update: Such bad timing for this Harper's Bazaar article by Huma:

THE GOOD WIFE

So why am I doing this? Because Anthony has always been a smart, caring, and dedicated person, and while he’s the same public servant who wants what’s best for the people he represents, he is now something else—a better man. New Yorkers will have to decide for themselves whether or not to give him a second chance. I had to make that same decision for myself, for my son, for our family. And I know in my heart that I made the right one.

Well I have no idea if Huma's decision to stay with her husband is a good one or not,  but I certainly do not think that Weiner has demonstrated that he should be trusted by the people of New York.

Yeah . . . .I'm with you--- Anthony needs to seek help.

One of the major differences between most (most) liberals and conservatives is that liberals more easily kick out their rotten apples, or at least hold them to a higher standard. Conservatives tend to defend their compatriots heinous behavior to the end (unless their is a live boy
concerned) then vilify a liberal if he scratches his nose. Anthony has no self control and needs to go home and garden.

      How true!

I said from the very beginning of this scandal that Anthony Weiner had destroyed a promising career and should not run for elected office again. As a NYer who had a lot of respect for him and the tough stands he took against the right wing, I felt betrayed by his behavior which demonstrated a serious lack of judgement.

It's not so much the actual incidents that I had a problem with, but what those incidents said about his ability to make sound decisions.

The man clearly has a problem and I feel tremendous sympathy for his wife who loses whether she stays with him or leaves.

I couldn't agree more. The minute he announced his candidacy I was embarrassed for all of us here in the city of NY. Every email I received from his campaign I replied to please remove me from their list of potential donors as I had no desire to be considered an Anthony Weiner supporter. He is a disgrace, as is Spitzer.
Every woman has her breaking point-apparently Huma has not hit hers yet. Poor thing-if I were her friend I would tell her to run, don't walk, to the nearest divorce lawyer.

As for Weiner's addiction with his "wiener" you are totally right-he is an exhibitionist and seriously needs counseling.
Go Christine Quinn!!! Hopefully the future Mayor of NYC!

Ummm how is this any different than Sanford running again? He left his state "to walk the Appalachian trail"
but instead went to Argentina. Now he divorced his then wife and married the new one and running or was running?
Anthony was set up by Breitbart.
Ok ya he has a prob. but so does Sanford, the guy who fucked his horse for a GF etc.
Oh and lets not even get into Palin as gov. Sexting a child.
      drug parties.
Multiple sex partners. Her husband a pimp.
Anthony has a problem he need therapy. But he is a dem.
And right now we need all the dems we can get sex addicts or not.
At least he isn't fucking his horse.

I had Morning Joe on for a bit early this morning, and they were running down a list of men still in office after being caught with their pants down, so to speak. Incredible, these guys' hubris! Makes one wonder if it's become so commonplace that people shrug it off or if "leadership" in this country has sunk so low that no one cares anymore. A sad commentary on what this nation as become.

Hmmmmmm.... one of the requirements fro being a good politician is a lot of confidence/arrogance, that you know what is right for not just yourself, but a lot of other folks, too. The next requirement is the charismatic character to convince people that you have requirement #1. Today, with all it takes to run a campaign, and the ridiculous length of campaigns here in the U.S. where the above becomes a way of life, there's also a bit of celebrity thrown in.

Put that all together. Then act surprised when these guys transfer all that to their personal lives? C'mon. s

It again, all about integrity and being adult. If it were more OK here just to visit a prostitute, as it is in Europe, well Spitzer would be fine. Weiner- still a problem. Not sure he's ever consummated his exhibitionism.

    2. Anonymous6:26 AM

Spitzer transported a woman across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. Spitzer had been NY Attorney General. He KNEW the law and broke it, because he thought he was ABOVE the law.

I could care less about Spitzer's sexual kinks. But the arrogance of a deliberate lawbreaker holding the office of Governor is sickening.

"If it were more OK here just to visit a prostitute, as it is in Europe, well Spitzer would be fine."

In ANY democracy, lawbreaking is unacceptable. If Spitzer didn't like the law, he could have worked to change it. But he CHOSE to break the law.

Absolutely! Spitzer had a reputation for being extremely tough when it came to anyone breaking the law. Obviously he felt he was exempt from those same laws himself because he was just too important.

6:03 is correct in saying that running for elected office requires a certain amount of arrogance, but sometimes they cross the line into thinking that laws don't apply to them.

I'm a NYer who originally supported both men, but who would never vote for either of them again.

I vote a person based on their record and my opinion of their character not the words of someone likely to be heavily biased.

Who gives a F*** what the Weiner's spouse thinks/says. Weiner wanted a media performance. His spouse did her act to his specification. What she said was produced by Weiner's speech writers. Neither Weiner or his spouse said anything that I could believe.

However any person with a record of semi-public sexual exhibitionism has a screw loose somewhere. There's plenty of capable politicos with much better crisis management teams keeping their candidates looking squeaky clean. Why bother voting for a candidate too stupid to hire a minder to keep his penis and his porn mind suitably out of the public eye.

When you think about it, Weiner and spouse are telling us about the state of their marriage. Honestly who CARES!!!! What does that have to do with anything. I care about government, not whether Weiner can get his spouse to tell reporters he is "forgiven".

Many people visit prostitutes, and personally I think it should be legal and regulated -- and I'm a woman. Wiener is another story, unfortunately. This guy is sick and he has got to know it. I can't believe he was still doing this stuff at the time of his big magazine spread touting his turnaround and his supposedly now-perfect family life. What a blatant, compulsive liar (to say the least), and what a piece of shit for even considering putting Huma up there to cover for him again. Did you see him reading her carefully chosen words over her shoulder? Frankly, I agree with Chris Mathews that Wiener is enjoying the attention and the game of getting over on people. Even if you are correct 7:13 an exhibitionist needs treatment too so he can learn to control his impulses. Weiner did rehab and if he continues his treatment he can control his illness.
Not sure yet if he is the right man for the job-it depends upon how far along he is into his recovery. An alcoholic who has gone through aa can still govern as long as he is far enough into treatment that he can focus on issues and his job while maintaining sobriety. The question about weiner is has he had enough time to address his problems before entering the racer? My opinion is probably not. If he was sexting last summer still then he is only a year "sober" if it ceased last summer. That isn't very long. Keeping control of his impulses requires developing new behaviors to use in place of the compulsions. It takes time.

You said: "He didn't / couldn't even finish his FIRST congressional term! Less than two years (palin!)"

Actually, he was elected congressman from NY SEVEN times, serving six full terms, and 12.5 years total. I'm not defending his actions. But I AM stating the facts. If you're going to do a faux outrage, at least have your facts correct and know who you're talking about.

Weiner was a very-respected Congressman who was quite vocal on important issues that were (and still are) important to the middle class and poor in our country, including healthcare, women's rights, and civil rights for all Americans. This doesn't excuse his stupidity in any way, but stop acting like a clown who's hyperventilating because you're thinking somebody else is having naughty thoughts.

And read a newspaper sometime, other than the local gossip and comics. Sheesh.

Not sure about it-but he did go into rehab immediately. Now it doesn't work if he wasn't committed but I know a couple whose marriage was completely on the rocks because the husband was a sex addict but he went to rehab and changed his ways and they have been together for years since with no problems.

It is an addiction just like alcohol and drugs and must be treated. Arrogance alone wouldn't cause weiner to do what he did. If he sought treatment and is following the directives of that treatment then he can remain free of further acts like this.

He may have great ideas to implement but he cannot do so until he has the necessary therapy. The lastest revelations about Anthony “Carlos Danger” Weiner have already added to the burden placed on Weiner’s shoulders in trying to earn the trust of New Yorkers so he becomes their new mayor. But one little detail picked up among all the gossip today is the fact that according to the timetable, the sexts released today show that his online relationship with another woman began one week before a mea culpa interview he did with People Magazine to say he and his family have moved on.

The piece, titled “Anthony Weiner Shares A Family Photo” on People‘s website, shows one big happy family that appears to have fully dealt with Weiner’s fall from grace. His wife, Huma Abedin said at the time, “Anthony has spent every day since [the scandal] trying to be the best dad and husband he can be.”

The timeline of the sexts released today by TheDirty.com show that Weiner’s online relatoinship with this new woman began on July 12, 2012, and Weiner found her on Formspring one week later, on the 19th. The People piece on the Weiner-Abedin family went online on the 18th.

WEINER LEAK SOURCE: More Revelations About Weiner's Online Activities Are Coming

Three of New York's flagship newspapers called on Anthony Weiner to drop out of the New York City mayoral race — and the editor of a nightlife blog promised more revelations about Weiner's lewd online activity.

The editorial boards of both the Daily News and the Wall Street Journal joined the New York Times editorial board in calling for Weiner to pull out of the race, the day after he admitted to new lewd activity online that went past his 2011 resignation from Congress.

Meanwhile, Nik Richie — the editor of The Dirty, the blog that first posted exchanges a 22-year-old woman and Weiner using the pseudonym "Carlos Danger" — promised in an interview with the New York Times that more information would trickle out.

Both Richie and the woman, who has been identified in various online profiles as Sydney Elaine Leathers, did not respond to requests for comment.

Here's what Richie detailed to the Times:

Mr. Richie said he first heard from the woman in April, but was unsure of her credibility. About a week ago, she told him that she had kept screenshots capturing her conversations with Mr. Weiner and asked how she could submit them to Mr. Richie’s Web site.

He said that he had no desire to hurt Mr. Weiner, whom he referred to, during the interview, as Carlos Danger, the nickname he used in exchanges with the woman.

“I have nothing against Carlos Danger,” Mr. Richie said. “I’m not trying to bring this guy down.”

Richie also said that Weiner discussed his plans to run for mayor with her.

All of this led to the Wall Street Journal editorial board saying he should drop out because of what he has forced his wife, Huma Abedin, to endure. It said he was clearly "not a normal human being."

The Daily News sent Weiner a message on its cover, telling him to "BEAT IT." And in an editorial, it bluntly said that he "cannot be mayor":

He gave all indications of forging on through endless cringe-inducing moments with Abedin, shamelessly holding the mother of his child out as the ultimate endorsement of his trustworthiness. She believes in me after I lied to her and lied to her again, Weiner says, and therefore so should New Yorkers. No. No. No.

Why is it that Democrats have such a hard time criticizing their own? Weiner should not be running for anything. He's what my mother would call "no-count." Why Huma stays with him is beyond me. Everyone harps on her brilliance, but she didn't sound too swift during that news conference.

Both of them are underwhelming, and clearly Weiner has too much time on his hands, which is odd considering he's a father and a husband. He needs to spend his time like most husbands, caring for his toddler, preparing meals, grocery shopping, fixing the toilet, cleaning the gutters, visiting elderly relatives, mowing the lawn, etc. Maybe he needs to take up Candy Crush Saga, but he certainly shouldn't be mayor of anything.

    Why Weiner must go

Anthony Weiner led all New Yorkers to believe that he stopped recklessly, immaturely and compulsively sexting after his resignation from Congress in abject humiliation. Lie.

Weiner reinforced the message that he had achieved maturity and self-control by citing wisdom gained with the birth of his son in December 2011, six months after he stepped down. Lie.

As he laid the groundwork for for a reentry into politics, Weiner sat beside his wife Huma Abedin as she told People magazine last July: “Anthony has spent every day since (resigning) trying to be the best dad and husband he can be.” Lie.

Weiner’s dishonest, impulse-driven psyche is once more stripped as naked as the images of his texted private parts.

He is not fit to lead America’s premier city. Lacking the dignity and discipline that New York deserves in a mayor, Weiner must recognize that his demons have no place in City Hall.

Weiner must also see that, having built his campaign on deception, he has badly damaged the process of selecting the city’s next chief executive.

He needs now to announce, loudly and clearly, that voters should bypass the name of Anthony Weiner, which at this late juncture is locked onto the Democratic primary ballot.

Unfortunately, Weiner gave no sign on Tuesday that he is grown up enough and has enough self-knowledge to relinquish the adulation and attention that he so addictively craves.

He gave all indications of forging on through endless cringe-inducing moments with Abedin, shamelessly holding the mother of his child out as the ultimate endorsement of his trustworthiness. She believes in me after I lied to her and lied to her again, Weiner says, and therefore so should New Yorkers. No. No. No.

Whatever Abedin’s motivations, whether she is drawing on the love she proclaimed for Weiner or speaking out of shared ambition, it is simply wrong for Weiner to exploit a private relationship, about which the public knows nothing, as evidence of his worthiness for public office.

That Weiner is perfectly willing to take advantage either of Abedin’s trust or of a partnership of ambition is perfectly clear from their joint interview with People.

Consider the timeline presented by the young woman on the receiving end of Weiner’s sexts:

It takes not simply narcissism but something bordering on dangerous sociopathy to know that there are still pictures of your junk and horny texts from your online alter-ego still floating around out there — material dated post-scandal — and choose to put yourself back in the spotlight anyway, making you and your family a giant target.

And THAT'S the most important and most disturbing part of this whole scandal.

Gryphon why in the world do you have a great deal of respect for Huma? She is Hillary Clinton's purse carrier. How bright do you have to be? She has quite enthusiastically participated in Weiner's campaign, knowing all along that he was lying about his "recovery". Pure power grab. And she has made her kid a big part of their bullshit publicity campaign - you know, like Trig. Sure doesn't deserve much respect in my book. They both need to go away and think up something useful to do for the world. This ain't it.

Hillary Clinton's purse carrier? You're an idiot. And you're not smart enough to be Hillary's purse carrier.

That is her job. Sorry you don't care for facts. And I am in fact not an idiot but you are, apparently. You should apply for the purse carrier job when the Clintons inevitably shove Huma overboard.

    The Good Wife

As her husband Anthony Weiner's sex scandal continues to unravel, Huma Abedin writes an exclusive up-front for Harper's Bazaar's September issue. Here's a first look at her heartfelt piece and our exclusive portrait.

...So why am I doing this? Because Anthony has always been a smart, caring, and dedicated person, and while he’s the same public servant who wants what’s best for the people he represents, he is now something else—a better man. New Yorkers will have to decide for themselves whether or not to give him a second chance. I had to make that same decision for myself, for my son, for our family. And I know in my heart that I made the right one.

Quite simply, I love my husband, I love my city, and I believe in what he wants to do for the people of New York.

I wish Bloomie could remain Mayor forever. NO ONE else is fit besides Rudy.

And Weiner's opponent is not known to the public by any stretch.

Yep, Glad I don't live anywhere near NYC. Love visiting though.

Did you just imply that you, by nature, support people just because theyre democrats? Wow. That's a hefty admission of ignorant voting right there. No wonder fraudulent Obama won.

"...If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down..."

That sentence alone was enough to make me vote against every Republican candidate for office. I consider that to be the epitome of intelligent voting. And if I need more incentive, I ponder the non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq or the traitorous selection of Sarah Palin for vice-president candidate.

I'll try to make this very simple for you.

People tend to support candidates who reflect values and beliefs similar to their own. I support Democrats, not because of some magic letter after their name, but because they support the same policies that I believe are the best for this country and the American people.

Many years ago, I was a Republican and have voted numerous times over the past 30 years for Republican candidates. However, the GOP has undergone a drastic change in the past couple of decades and has demonstrated over and over again that it is doing everything in its power to turn this country into a theocracy run by the Koch brothers, eliminating the rights of everyone who is not a white, male, evangelical member of the 1%.

I refuse to vote for Republicans because they stand for everything I think is wrong with our country and will do their best to destroy it if they acquire unchecked control.

If a woman politician running for mayor of NYC had a history of sending pictures of her genitals...

and then got caught sexting again...

and STILL hoped to be mayor of NYC.

Of course, she'd be elected. It would be too good a comedy routine to relegate to Saturday Night Live.

Dead candidate walking. He's just waiting for 'the call' from someone in his fundraising committee to tell him it's over.

    Sad...

Poor guy got fucked by his own Weiner.
