You know that's what it really comes down to, who is, and who is not reasonable.
However the unfortunate truth is that those who are the most unreasonable absolutely believe that it is EVERYBODY ELSE who is being unreasonable instead of they themselves.
This is a nice sentiment, but its just not true. When the Quakers settled Pennsylvania, they had a good, tolerant relationship with the native population. But they were also tolerant of the hard living opinionated scots-irish immigrants who joined them. Those immigrants warred with the local Indian population and disrupted the status quo, hurting everyone.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, you have to have enough of a backbone to shut down the crazies who want to run things. (i.e., the Palins of the world).

The problem here is getting everyone to agree about the definition of "reasonable".
ReplyDeleteThe first commenter here brought up the "hard living opinionated scots-irish immigrants". (I find that description to be rather prejudiced myself, but I won't delve into that.)
By today's standards, they WERE unreasonable. By THEIR standards? No.
So, what is "reasonable"?
And can we ever get EVERYONE to agree on it and keep it that way? (Probably not.)
absolutely agree with you Leland
