I think this comic sums it up pretty well.

I have raised young boys, white of course. Though I taught them to be respectful of women, and not to do drugs, I NEVER felt the need to warn them that they might be profiled by law enforcement or that they might be considered guilty even though they had not done anything wrong.

Even more dangerous is being profiled by a wannabe cop.

I raised sons also and having "that talk" with them didn't include anything about their wardrobe or walking on a sidewalk.

  2. You'd thought these insane right-wingers will have the common sense to strengthen minority right laws because they are demographically headed where they'll need it

You've raised young boys? I thought you only had a daughter.

  4. My grandson is eight years old and black. I am grateful that he is being raised in Juneau where hopefully he won't have problems. It's been a pretty good place, and I hope that doesn't change.

His dad lives in Bellingham, Washington, and when he was given a promotion that had him supervising a bunch of Southern rednecks, he went to work one morning to find a dummy swinging from a noose. Needless to say, it was terrifying for him. The company, BP, managed to "smooth things over", transferred him as I recall, and as quickly as they were able swept it under the rug. Of course, the good old boys stuck together, and I don't think they ever found out who did it. My son-in-law's stress level was through the roof for a long time. He's from Louisiana. They take that stuff seriously.

But, but, Lynn, there IS no more racism in our country! Haven't you heard???

We have a black President so it's all gone, isn't it???

That hanging dummy wasn't REALLY a threat, it was probably just...just...

Oh, never mind. It damn sure WAS a racist threat and it's infuriating to believe crap like that still happens in this country!

Parental advice to a young female:

Rape can cause you to be pregnant and society will blame you no matter what.
