Remembering Alaska's Independence Day four years ago today!

(Part Two)

"Life is too short to compromise time and resources... it may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: "Sit down and shut up", but that's the worthless, easy path; that's a quitter's way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and "go with the flow".

Nah, only dead fish "go with the flow". "

God that was a great day!

I remember being on the phone all morning trying to find out why the Governor had called a last minute emergency press conference, and giving the press only about twenty minutes to get all the way out to Wasilla to cover it.

When I learned the reason I could not stop laughing and smiling.

And I am again laughing and smiling today.

Thanks Sarah Palin! That was the nicest thing you ever did for Alaska!

If you are interested here is the transcript.

Of course this is everybody's favorite version of the speech.

My favorite part of that was Palin and Todd passing off the baby to little Piper, then ignoring him when he cried. Yup, showing off their incredible parenting skills to the whole nation once again. If Republicans had any self-awareness, Palin would be ashamed.

What a pathetic display that was.

Her dozens of Wasilly supporters providing backdrop.

The lame ducks quacking in the lake.

Her dizzying excuses and convoluted reasoning to save the state in order to cash in on her fame. And that smirk, that smirk she walked away with all triumphant-like, as if she pulled one on all of us while retaining her dignity.

Nothing will ever erase the fact that she quit in her one tumultuous term as Chief-Executive-Commander-in-Chief-four-day-a-week-four-hour-a-day-Co-Governor.

By "with security", you mean "men with loaded guns". Wonder if they'll ban videos of that struggle, since under concealed carry, many republican lawmakers may choose to be armed for this event as well. Do the republicans in Texas intend for this issue to lead to bloodshed (of women, who they consider to be expendable, of course)?

In reading the Vanity Fair version of Palin's resignation speech (hilarious, btw), I couldn't help but come up with a few observations and questions:
    1) On one page, Palin says she doesn't want to take foreign trips the way other politicians do, wasting Alaskans' money. Then, at the end, she says she just went to Kosovo.
    2) She's lambasted our President for changing his position on gay rights, after having talked with his daughters. Yet Palin reports that she polled her family about what to do, and relied on their opinion -- "Hell, yeah" --in making her decision to quit. (I doubt the Obama daughters voiced their opinion as "Hell, yeah.")

Okay, aside from the obvious hypocrisy, I wonder if you could update those of us who don't know much of what's happened in Alaska since 2009:

    3) What has happened with the Mat-Su dairy that she trumpeted in her speech? Having saved it from state control.
4( What has happened to the half-billion dollars given to a Canadian company to build a pipeline that, I believe, has never been built? Is there any way to recover some of those taxpayer funds? Was any of it Federal money?

Thanking you in advance for your elucidation of these issues,
    I am,
A proud resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

P.S. Be sure to come visit our great state, including the sites where Paul Revere rang his bell to warn the British, and the Boston tea party took place, unwittingly bestowing a name on a conservative fringe party more than 225 years later. Please don't hold that against us.

There are downsides to being a narcissist who believes her own delusions of grandeur, combined with being a manipulative grifter who's convinced that she can spin anything. Reality intrudes on the spin, and actions matter more than words.

With that one act of QUITTING halfway through her first term, she turned her back on both the voters who elected her and on the process of fulfilling the obligation of public service.

This one action sealed her fate. Expectations for her political future dropped, and she was judged as unfit, unserious, and unreliable. She validated that judgement repeatedly with silly reality shows, ghostwritten fluff books, poorly prepared speeches, and Fox cameos with nothing to add to the topic at hand. She clearly was in it for Sarah, held her hand out for donations, and essentially relied on a verbal and visual version of fancy pageant walkin'

She showed us who she really was, four years ago, and no one missed the message. She's been marginalized ever since, playing to the fringe, used by the Roger Ailes of the party, and shunned by the adults.

I find her tremendously amusing and a little sad.

    Happy Quitday!
    Sorry to keep people waiting.

Why did Sarah Palin suddenly quit as Governor of Alaska? Did she really want to do whatever she said in her resignation speech? Was she fed up with the job? Was she was worried about something she had done while governor? Are there still secrets of the Palin Administration to be uncovered?

What was her biggest economic accomplishment as governor? The ACES oil tax plan that has now been done in by Governor Parnell? The AGIA gas pipeline that was never built? The Alaska Film Industry Tax Credit program which offers government subsidies to well known acting talents like the Palin family?

I think her biggest economic accomplishment was signing an obscure bill on trusts in 2009. It was actually something you have probably never heard of until now. Sarah Palin's Multi Billion Dollar "Blattmachr special". I'll have to post a simplified version of what she helped pull off. The full version requires reading and understanding the fine print of the appropriate state and federal laws and the tax codes.

After President Obama signed The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 on December 17, 2010 there was a special tax break available to the very rich until the end of 2010. A special deal in effect from December 17, 2010 to Dec 31, 2010 ONLY. Rich people in the know could save literally billions in taxes with this new special deal. Luckily they knew this was coming (since their tax and trust advisors actually wrote the special provisions and had them inserted into the laws) and were ready in advance to take advantage of this opportunity of a lifetime. The bill that Sarah signed in 2009 allowed residents of many states such as California, Texas, Illinois and Washington to participate in this planned tax giveaway by naming (hiring) an Alaskan co-trustee (like Douglas Blattmachr who is Jonathan's brother) for their trusts which then allowed the resident of any state to use the Alaskan law signed by Governor Palin to take advantage of the two week tax loophole.

Sarah Palin is probably not proud of this bill she signed. She really should have been Mitt Romney's running mate, because she is a much better friend of the Romney Walton Koch 1% than anyone else. This tax deal is one more example of her double talk and projection. Her bogus focus on the IRS and so called political corruption now seems even more bogus and hypocritical. This tax deal is the definition of politically corrupt insider dealing. That is not surprising since Sarah Palin was a political insider with friends in high places even before she was listed on the incorporation papers for the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc." 527 corporate/political slush fund in 2003.

Here is the link to the description of the special deal in Forbes. Be sure to look for the mentions of Sarah Palin and the "Blattmachr special" she signed. Tax Deal Trust Fund Loophole Could Save Billions For Rich http://www.forbes.com/sites/janetnovack/2010/12/16/tax-deal-trust-fund-loophole-could-save-billions-for-rich/

    Continued in part two.

Part two of the Blattmachr special:

Here is the confirmation that the loophole was in the signed bill. From the Eagle River Advisors (the firm where Jonathan Blattmachr is a partner) website in 2010. http://eagleriveradvisors.com/pdf/Unique-and-Time-Limited-GST-Opportunities.pdf

    "Unique and Time-Limited GST Opportunities
By Jonathan G. Blattmachr, Mitchell M. Gans and Diana S.C. Zeydel
    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 (―New
Act‖), signed into law on December 17, 2010, by President Obama, has far reaching ramifications for estate planning. In particular, a unique chance to avoid generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax has arisen under the New Act.

But that opportunity will expire at the end of this year. It is critically important for estate planners to be aware of this opportunity and to bring it to the attention of their clients before January 1. To understand this opportunity, it is important to be familiar with the operation of the GST tax rules applicable to the current situation."

The bonus question is who introduced the bill that was passed by the Alaska Legislature and signed by Sarah Palin. Note that since it was called a "Blattmachr special" (and there have been others before this one) we already know who gets the credit for writing it. My guess is that the bill was introduced by Lesil Mcguire. In 2009 she introduced SB 60 UNIFORM PROBATE CODE; TRUSTS, WILLS
SB 62 COMMUNITY PROPERTY OF MARRIED PERSONS
SB 63 TRANSFER RESTRICTIONS ON TRUSTS

Lesil Mcguire has been introducing bills having to do with the technicalities of generation skipping trusts since at least 2001. I wonder who wrote this one? http://www.akrepublicans.org/pastlegs/22ndleg/press/prmcguire103142001.shtml

    "House Passes
    McGuire's Perpetuities Bill
    HB 34 Changes Trust Law
to Keep Alaska Attractive to Investors

For Immediate Release: March 14, 2001

Contact: Representative Lesil McGuire at (907) 465-2995

(JUNEAU) - Alaska's stature as one of the most attractive states in which to establish trusts would remain undiminished under a bill passed unanimously by the House on Tuesday.

Sponsored by Rep. Lesil McGuire (R-Anchorage), House Bill 34 makes technical changes in Senate Bill 162, passed into law by the Twenty-First Alaska Legislature. That bill had the unintended effect of creating immediate tax liabilities for people who were the beneficiaries of a generation-skipping trust and who tried to exercise non-general powers of appointment to pass those trust assets along to others, she said.

"To maintain Alaska's position as a leader in trusts, our trust laws need to be a model of clarity," McGuire said. "As with most technically complex areas, trust law legislation must evolve to meet its originally intended purpose."

HB 34 would clarify the wording and application of SB 162 in making the same distinction that the common law has made between a "presently exercisable general power of appointment" and "testamentary general power of appointment."

By maintaining Alaska's desirability as a state in which to establish perpetual trusts, the bill would help Alaska attract millions of dollars in bank deposits, investments, endowments or other assets that might otherwise migrate to more trust-friendly states, McGuire said.

HB 34 moves next to the Senate for consideration."

Why isn't Sarah talking about her part in the 2009 Blattmachr special? It really is something she should be proud of.
