The assault rifle that a gun nut used as a crutch fires and kills little girl. "Used as a crutch" is not a metaphor.

Courtesy of Salon:

Court records show an Oregon man told police he was using his assault rifle as a crutch to help him get up from a couch at a friend’s apartment when it fired a burst through the ceiling and killed a little girl upstairs.

The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports a police affidavit says Jon Andrew Meyer Jr. told investigators the gun went off accidentally at the Grants Pass apartment on June 27.

Defense lawyer Gary Berlant adds Meyer had been assured the gun was not fully automatic.

Meyer is being held on $250,000 bail on charges of manslaughter, assault and unlawful possession of a machine gun. Authorities say he was responsible for the reckless burst of rifle fire that killed 5-year-old Alysa Bobbitt of Shady Cove and wounded apartment resident Karen Hancock.

The girl and Hancock were upstairs in the same apartment as Meyer.

Please tell me again how guns don't kill people, people kill people.

The fact is that the more weapons people have available to them the more they start seeing them as innocuous household items.

Can't open that can of beans? Here use this Luger.

Can't get the dog across the street to stop barking? Here lay down some suppression fire until he shuts up.

Can't get you fat ass off of the couch on your own? Thank God you have that assault rifle handy to help you.

This kind of thing sickens me. I will assume that the gun nuts will just push for ALL five year olds to start wearing bullet proof vests to protect themselves.

After all that that is essentially what they did for school children.

Since when did children suddenly become unsafe from gunfire in their own homes?

  2. Guns don't kill people. Stupid and careless people with guns kill people. Think about Trayvon Martin. If George Zimmerman wasn't carrying a gun would he have stalked and killed Trayvon or would he have let the police do their job? I'm in neighborhood watch. We are told at every meeting that we are the extra eyes and ears. We are to observe and report. That is our job. Sorting out who is a criminal and who isn't is the job of the police. There is an element in our society that has completely gone off the deep end about guns. I have guns and I am not afraid that the government is coming to take them away. But I'm a reasonable person.

But how do you keep guns out of the hands of the idiots?

    When will this insanity end?

    We must stop being afraid.

"Defense lawyer Gary Berlant adds Meyer had been assured the gun was not fully automatic."

Nothing like offing a 5-year-old while you're learning your firearm's features.

There is no such thing as an 'accidental discharge'.

    It's a NEGLIGENT discharge.

If a firearm is NOT loaded it won't fire. Period.

    It's as simple as that.

Exactly, 7:17. It's a fucking act of negligence contributing to a homicide.

When someone insists on being a fucking idiot and doing stupid things, it's no coincidence that "accidents" follow them around like a Siamese twin.

If I hear of or read about just one more cocksucker talking about their God-given rights to own these fucking weapons, I'm going to punch the SOB in the throat. They're welcome to pop off a couple of rounds at me thereafter, and I'll be impressed if they can do that and hit their target while sucking air through a straw.

These assholes should be required to have a million dollars in liability insurance to own something that causes death at their hands. Where are the fucking adults in the gun-nut lobby? This is sickening.

BTW, I'm not a fucking pinko commie Marxist leftie that hates guns. I own two shotguns, a 30.06 rifle with scope that I hunt with and two pistols. And they're all stored in a safe with the exception of a revolver I keep handy which has a trigger lock on it. And I'd be a fucking fool to not have extremely high limits of liability coverage, just as I do on everything else that can hurt someone else--- cars, property, etc.

But what these idiots are doing being do careless and negligent is criminal as well as tortuous, and I hope this dickhead gets pounded in criminal as well as civil court.

I would fire my attorney if he ever made such a lame statement on my behalf. I wouldn't accept that kind of half-ass excuse from a 9-yr old, and certainly not an adult that works for me. If you're doing something stupid that exposes yourself or others to a preventable risk...if something bad happens, it's NOT an accident! It's negligence and irresponsibility, period. My kids can each repeat that same statement verbatim and have known the importance of safety and proper handling, not just of guns but anything that can harm doneone if misused, ever since they were first allowed to handle guns or anything that requires mature, responsible behavior. And I followed up and reminded them until it became THEIR mantra.

It makes me wonder "Who raised this idiot that killed the little 5-yr old girl?" Reckon they're proud of their son and their own job of parenting? Disgusting.

Sometimes an assault rifle is only an assault Rifle.

No more lame excuses (excuse the pun). Crutches don't kill people, guns do.

I'm not a fan of the death penalty, but reading things like this always leave me questioning my convictions.

Since when is an assault rifle NOT automatic? Yes, let's sell these things to every moron in America. The GOP, creating more need for undertaker and casket builders every day, and getting a cut from every gun sold. Good old patriotic Christian AMericans all. And the rest of the civilized world just shakes their heads and cancels their American vacation plans.

Yes, *little c* christian gun-goons can now tell us that's it was all God's will, and the little girl is now in a better place.

Yes, I'm being sarcastic. How was this idiot able to purchase any type of gun? Rhetorical, of course. I know the answer. I'm just disgusted.

A doctor has to go thru 4 years of training and 1-5 years residency; working horrible hours and studying constantly so he doesn't make a mistake or even KILL someone. I've known doctors who cried and took months to get over losing a patient, especially if it was a child.

But what has happened to our sensitivity and common sense when it comes to using guns? Any Tom, Dick & Harry can buy or get a gun illegally, leave it around the house and kill spouses and children! I feel like MY freedoms now have been taken away - I can't go to places I used to enjoy - not the mall, not the movie, not even enjoying a beautiful day. I'm much more anxious and fearful than I used to be even 5 years ago. What is going to stop the carnage?

Apartment dweller with a gun that probably cost him more than a few month's rent. Why have this gun? Not for hunting for food to sustain his family, just a dumb trashy person with a big ole gun. Sick Redneck piece of trash. So sad that others were injured and killed for his sick obsession with weapons.

He owns it because he can.

And now a 5-year-old child is dead.

To the NRA, she is merely collateral damage. But their gun manufacturer controllers got their profits so, as far as they're concerned, no harm no foul.

And now a 5-year-old child is dead.

Will he be charged with negligent homicide?

Every gun purchaser should be required to attend a class in gun safety. And pass a test. Much as getting a driver's license.

A blitzkrieg of public service announcements would raise awareness of the dangers and well-informed folks would insist on proper gun safety, especially around their children.

That's not taking away any one's rights, just making the public aware of the dangers of unsecured weapons.

"Every gun purchaser should be required to attend a class in gun safety."

When Arizona removed all restrictions on gun ownership several years ago, the ultra-right wing legislative justification for eliminating the previously mandated 16 hour safety course was that 'everyone needs different levels of firearms training and for some 16 hours is insufficient. By removing ALL requirements and leaving it to the good judgment of the individual, we can encourage those that need more training to get it.'

The result is that in Arizona, among other places, I'm sure, if you have the money and the urgent need to have a gun, that's all you need to get one.

Life is very simple when you're a conservative ideologue.

If this were my child, I would have ripped his nutsack off and shoved it down his throat. I know that sounds violent and awful...but I would seriously go bananas if some asshole killed my child "accidentally" by being careless with his gun. Fuck faces!

Sorry, Gryphen, but even the gun nuts aren't stupid enough to risk telling people that 5 year olds should wear vests indoors due to this tragic scene.

NO vest protects from bullets coming UP from the floor!

Now you listen here, Gryphen - if that's your real name, which I would bet my two tickets to the upcoming Ronald Reagan Memorial Gun Park's Annual Cavalcade of Automatic Weapons and Line Dancing Expo that it is not - I'm getting pretty tired of your incessant bagging on Amercia's enduring romance with firearms!

Guns have been proven by firearms industry scientists to be 100% safe and effective in killing suspicious individuals at a distance of up to 1500 meters and for the temporary relief of impotence and 'tiny penis syndrome' (TPS) in stalwart defenders of the Constitution's Second Amendment, aka Jeebus' Law, since there's a growing sentiment among Intelligent Design scientists that the text of the amendment was actually written by Jeebus Hisself.

It's in the bible, buddy boy, a book I HIGHLY doubt you read religiously!

"And Jeebus released a stream of magnum rounds and declared it awesome."
    Gatlings 30:06

    So knock it off, already!!

Remember, every so-called 'innocent death' from gun use should be celebrated as evidence that at least in Amercia (and Somalia, also, too) NOTHING can stop a man's god given right to discharge a firearm when, where and at whom he pleases!!!
