* We didn’t intervene when over 100,000 Syrians were tragically slaughtered by various means, but we’ll now intervene to avenge the tragic deaths of over 1,000 Syrians killed by chemical weapons, though according to the White House we’re not actually planning to take out the chemical weapons because doing so would require “too much of a commitment.”
* President Obama wants to do what, exactly? Punish evil acts in the form of a telegraphed air strike on Syria to serve as a deterrent? If our invasion of Iraq wasn’t enough of a deterrent to stop evil men from using chemical weapons on their own people, why do we think this will be?
* The world sympathizes with the plight of civilians tragically caught in the crossfire of this internal conflict. But President Obama’s advertised war plan (which has given Assad enough of a heads-up that he’s reportedly already placing human shields at targeted sites) isn’t about protecting civilians, and it’s not been explained how lobbing U.S. missiles at Syria will help Syrian civilians. Do we really think our actions help either side or stop them from hurting more civilians?

And where’s the legal consent of the people’s representatives? Our allies in Britain have already spoken. They just said no. * Our Nobel Peace Prize winning President needs to seek Congressional approval before taking us to war. It’s nonsense to argue that, “Well, Bush did it.” Bull. President Bush received support from both Congress and a coalition of our allies for “his wars,” ironically the same wars Obama says he vehemently opposed because of lack of proof of America’s vital interests being at stake.
* Bottom line is that this is about President Obama saving political face because of his “red line” promise regarding chemical weapons.
* As I said before, if we are dangerously uncertain of the outcome and are led into war by a Commander-in-chief who can’t recognize that this conflict is pitting Islamic extremists against an authoritarian regime with both sides shouting “Allah Akbar” at each other, then let Allah sort it out.

ReplyDeleteYes the wars in Syria and all over the Middle East have been endless and have continued for more years than you or I have lived, however, chemical warfare is not something any of us want to take on. Yes darfur has been exercising genocide while no one except George Clooney seems to speak out about it and yes it is a tragedy beyond our imaginings but I do not believe the genocide has been carried out by use of chemical warfare.
I understand murder is murderand dead is dead. I understand we cannot police the world nor should we. My understanding is that if Syria is allowed to do this on it's own citizens it is not at all a big jump to believing they will use this on turkey or Israel or the uk or the USA.
I am a pacifist by nature and yet I cannot say with firm onviction that we should not strike the military weapon manufacturers in Syria. Remember that is what has been discussed about a strategic strike.
As much as I would like Tito be for altruistic reasons and to aid those citizens being murdered in such an agonizing manner-I am honest enough to know that we would be protecting our own interests; be they a pipeline, oil, making a deal to protect our allies nearby and/or to help prevent a chemical attack upon Americans.
I do know president Obama is not a war manger. I do know he is intelligent. I do know he is biding his time-giving Assad a chance to come clean and make a deal. The president is going to be nailed for going in and for not going in. As it is with all he does.
Because he knows this he won't cave to pressure. He knows he can't win regardless of his efforts or choice.
Selfishly-I would prefer to not die from a chemical warfare attack.

And how much is the U.S. willing to invest in this? For how long? And can we afford to take actions - even if completely justified?

A few months ago McCain and his shadow, L. Graham, and Sarah Palin and all of the other GOP regulars were calling President Obama cowardly for not siding with the insurgents then and there. The most fascinating nuggets from the piece explore the many consultants Palin has paid to sharpen her image and help her as she (maybe) explores a 2012 White House bid. TPM took a close look at her spending this summer and found Palin spent nearly $400,000 on consultants, lobbying firms and the standard direct mail and fundraising firms politicians frequently use just in the second quarter.
Our piece detailed that Palin paid $22,000 to Rebecca Mansour’s Aries Petra Consulting for “internet messaging,” also known as posting on the Palin Facebook page. Previously identified by Politico as a “Los Angeles screenwriter and political neophyte whose creation of the popular cheerleading blog Conservatives4Palin (C4P) endeared her to Palin’s inner circle,” Mansour is described by Vanity Fair as “Palin’s most unconventional hire.”

After Mansour’s voice disappeared on C4P [by mid-August 2009], however, Palin’s voice on Facebook and Twitter started sounding increasingly provocative and irascible. A company called Aries Petra Consulting was formed in September and registered to Mansour’s home address, but under someone else’s name. (In astrology, Aries is the ram—or “RAM.”) SarahPAC’s first payment to the firm was made in October, about two weeks before Palin began her book tour. Mansour’s work for the campaign only became public in February 2010 with SarahPAC’s quarterly disclosures; the day before the disclosures were filed, C4P announced that Mansour and another founder had gone to work for SarahPAC the previous year. Mansour denies that she writes Palin’s Facebook posts or Twitter feed, telling a reporter that “anything that goes out under [Palin’s] name is hers.”
