The Huffington Post invited screenwriter Danny Strong to an interview about his big new movie "The Butler." However talk soon turned to ANOTHER movie he worked on, "Game Change."
Courtesy of HuffPo:
Addressing criticism that the film received for its perceived politicized portrayal of Palin, Strong told Hill, "I disagree with the statement that half the country views 'Game Change' as a hit job on Sarah Palin. I actually think it's a very very small group of people. I think anyone who's fair-minded can go into that movie and see that the film is completely fair."
Pointing to right wing extremists, he added, "I think there's a fringe group in both parties. And I think there's a fringe group on the Right that's quite loud and quite vocal. And I think that they make people think they represent 50 percent of the country, but I think they represent five percent of the country."
Strong maintained, "I think that film was completely fair to Sarah Palin, and there was a lot of sentiment that it was the most sympathetic, empathetic portrayal of her that exists period."
You know considering the stuff that the movie left out, and comparing it to "The Lies of Sarah Palin,"The Rogue," and "Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin," I would have to agree that a movie which depicts her as an undereducated, combative narcissist, who blamed everybody around her for her own shortcomings WAS probably the most sympathetic, empathetic portrayal that exists of her.
Of course we COULD compare it to the books written by her, her family, or biographers who never looked beyond the surface, to discover WHO they were actually writing about, but really why bother?
I also agree with Strong in that there is really only a fringe group that has a problem with Game Change, and that it only represents perhaps five percent of the country, I would even suggest that the number is even lower these days.
We know the HBO movie received huge ratings, swept the awards for that year, and won its star Julianne Moore her first prime time Emmy. So yeah, I would say it was far less than 50 percent of the American people who viewed Game Change as an unfair "hit job on Sarah Palin."
Though, to be honest, undoubtedly a number of people tuned in HOPING that it was a hit job.
I know I did.
agreed - the right fringe is closer to 5%. Democratic voters are known as the silent majority and really are.
ReplyDeleteWe don't scream as loud because we don't have to.
We're educated.
o/t, slightly:
ReplyDeleteGood news, Sarah!
President Obama has launched plans to help make college more affordable for more Americans.
This means that your three adult children may be able to pay for the tuition that's clearly kept them from enrolling at their local community college, or the University of Alaska, or even your alma mater, the University of Idaho!
Todd can qualify, too, to finally get himself some college credits and then apply for a job, since he's been unemployed for quite a while now. Your family income is shrinking, so now's the time to kick Todd out of bed and tell him to hit the books.
They could all car pool together, if they went to Alaskan schools, which would save on carbon emissions, and thus reduce greenhouse gases. A win-win for everyone! Just think of the exciting intellectual discussions you'll have around your dinner table, as all the Palin students talk about what they learned that day! Plus, Piper will pick up so much information she'll be able to apply for early admission to the college of her choice.
But remember, both Todd and Track enrolled in and started college, but dropped out for some reason in their first semesters. Uh, because they were stupid and lazy? They could have flitted about like Sorry.
DeleteSorry -- didn't know that Todd and Track couldn't hack it in college.
DeleteI guess they had to go get themselves some real "work," and not sit around like brainiac, entitled students, who are good for nothing (until they graduate, and go on to business careers, medical school, or even become television producers....or television talking heads, like Megyn Kelly, etc.). Todd wanted to become an entrepreneur, with several freelance employees in his stable, while Track longed to be a warrior, and then, er, something else, not yet specified.
Track also failed fishing. They should just tell the truth about that guy so he could have a chance at rehab. Living a lie only makes him sicker. With treatment he may be able to hold a job one day and maintain a relationship.
DeleteWow Anon 8:12 is up on the libel

ReplyDeletePalin is crowing about a horse named "Dance To Bristol" that just won some big race in Saratoga.
People on her facebook page are actually offering her congratulations.
The stupid... it burns.
Bristol don't run. Ginorimica galumps though.
Deletelol
DeleteSarah loves her Free Dumb because it doesn't cost her a penny.
Palin's fans are literally the most stupid people I have ever seen. It's truly unbelievable. They are fucking DUMB !
DeleteDid she win by a chin? IF not, I'm not impressed.
DeleteI can agree except, I'd say the 5% is a lower %
ReplyDeleteWhile I thought the movie was very well done, I actually thought they were extraordinarily kind to Sarah and put her in the best possible light. She really is so much worse than she was portrayed.
ReplyDeleteI agree. They did not show just how ignorant or how mentally ill she really is. I have faith that someday the truth about Palin will see the light of day. And of course every time she posts to fb or twitter we get a little closer to that truth.
DeleteAnon @3:06 PM
DeleteYes! She is much much worse. She has absolutely no redeeming characteristics. She is an ignorant and vicious totally dishonest child in an adult body.
O/T but will chafe Palin butts.... baby North West is exceptionally cute. { Kardashian reality }
ReplyDeleteThe famous baby loving family of Palins and Reality TV Show peers to the Khardashians will certainly have a welcoming post about the adorable baby, North. North to Alaska and such. Kim and Bristol have a special sisterhood. Giving birth but not married, both know the ropes in the industry now. Strong mother's that work in TV, neither unwed mothers have much education. Does Kim cook?
DeleteSarah went all out for Ashton, even mentioned some old liberal professor. How can they miss out on such a wonderful blessing as the joy of welcoming their peer's new precious one to the world? Sarah would love the story about Katie sending Kim a baby gift and her reaction.
That poor baby is rather cute, however, I can't help but feel sorry for it, the life in the spotlight, the overbearing mother and grandmother and narcissistic father that only impregnated Kim K when the speculation about his gay lover became too much. That's a lot of baggage for one little kid to carry.
Delete"I think that film was completely fair to Sarah Palin, and there was a lot of sentiment that it was the most sympathetic, empathetic portrayal of her that exists period." Are we supposed to feel sorry for her because she's a stupid asshole? No way do I feel sorry for this lying, scheming bitch. What the movie honestly portrayed was how ignorant she was on so many levels and how she thought her shit didn't stink!
ReplyDeleteIt was far too sympathetic toward her. To show her as missing Trig? ha ha. To show a dramatic iconic representation of a mother's love for her warrior body son driving military brass to golf courses was over the top. To show her as ah-shucks in her VP prep debate with O'Biden - puh-leeze.
ReplyDeleteGame Change was generous to Palin. The movie captured her ignorance but she is much more vicious and dishonest than depicted. Perhaps they thought the reality of what she is would not be believable so they softened her up a bit.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Strong. Consider how attractive Moore is compared to Palin.
ReplyDeleteThough Palin was as attractively groomed as possible during the campaign (my God, in retrospect, the pricey stylists, makeup artists, and dressers earned every penny, didn't they?), Moore has a prettier facial bone structure, in my opinion.
As for everything else, no editing could disguise the Couric fiasco. I don't care if Churchillian pronouncements were left on the cutting room floor (and I am sure they were not). Nothing can disguise "...reducing taxes ...has got to accompany tax reductions."
Oh, I'm sorry. I selectively edited that statement. Here it is in all its glory: "...so healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans..."
Not good enough?
Okey-dokey: "That's why I say, I, like every American I'm speaking with, we're ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the tax payers looking to bail out, but ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping tho— it's got to be all about job creation too, shoring up our economy, and putting it back on the right track, so healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as— competitive— scary thing, but one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that."
While that little skippity doo-da through stupid land doesn't demonstrate Palin's viciousness, every deranged imbecilic tirade since then has.
Roast in hell *** for all eternity, McCain.
***Hell = endless loop of Palin's screeching voice and the resulting splattering thud of demons falling out of the sky with every cacawww.
That heaping serving bowl of word salad always reminded me of the magnetic words you put on refrigerators.
DeleteInstead, it was as if she had a whole handful of unrelated 'Important Phrases' on cards that she threw in the air and recited when they hit the ground.
It would have been great if someone along the way had asked her to clarify what she had just said. She would have no earthly idea because it was always just random talking points she pulled out of her ass and none of it ever made any sense!
I'm confused, was she for the bailout? Is she supporting healthcare reform here or speaking against it? When she says "trade" is she thinking "trades", like carpentry, or foreign trade?
DeleteWow, just wow, I'd forgotten about that gem, which I'm certain is what she and McCain hoped that everyone would do.
@Anonymous5:03 PM
DeleteI'm confused, was she for the bailout?
In what respect, Charlie?
Is she supporting healthcare reform here or speaking against it?
Yes.
When she says "trade" is she thinking "trades", like carpentry, or foreign trade?
Yes.
It's all crystal clear now, right?
Poor Sarah Palin. Now she wants to continue her career as a failed sports writer on her facebook.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin1 hour ago · Congratulations to Dance to Bristol for winning the Ballerina Stakes today! This amazing horse is on a great winning streak. It's wonderful to have something more fun to write about at a time when so many troubling things are in the news. I'll be on Greta Van Susteren's show
It can never be said enough...that woman is a effing idiot! Who googled that tidbit for her? Does she have answers and solutions to "many troubling things"....never! All that bullshit just to say she'll be on Greta's show.
DeleteWith her obsession with the tabloids she was probably just googling Bristol to see what the tabs had to say about her this week. She had a whole stack of tabs on her bed, OK, Life and Style, National Enquirer, People and there was not one mention of Bristol, so she had to double check because hey, what's she paying these people for if they won't talk about her daughter! All week long her daughter's been talkin' about what a hard ass worker she is and no one is reporting it!! Dammit!

Love how hate runs your life, how you stalk someone you dont like, how she fulfills your life.
DeleteGame Change was very kind to the Palin family, the kids and Todd. They were shown as very supportive. Piper was depicted as cute as a button. The facts were that Sarah was depicted as being "way over her head" and that truth enrages her. She hates anyone who sees through her.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it showed her inability to admit she was wrong, her rogue-ness and disloyalty to McCain, her emotional breakdowns, her love of adoring fans. In fact, without Game Change, people would still see through her by her actions. Her rogue nature and disloyalty to McCain showed during the campaign, she attacks and blames others for her mistakes and she begs for attention and writes and acts like someone who needs serious psychiatric evaluation.
I would be alright with the sweet handling of Palin in Game Change if they had the gumption to do another more honest movie about her. It is really a shame they did not touch on so much. In that way they are helping to keep all the myths a live and growing. That family is nothing but frauds and charlatans, not to mention pimping. What a low standard for our country to continually endure, why?
ReplyDeleteDo they think the truth is going to destroy us? It is just the opposite. Every time she is supported or gets by with things we are less.
I will be sick if Mr. Chomsky and Mr. Kutcher turn out to be wimps. I would not like for my best friend who I agree with 100% to use me without asking to raise money for anything. How disrespectful. It is hard to believe anyone would tolerate such a thing.
But on the other hand...Mr Chomsky's remarks were made over a year ago. Can you imagine the 'hay' the Palinistas would make if he now objected to her use of his name and image for fund-raising?
DeleteIt is part of her feral slyness, her political instincts, that she can take surprise advantage of remarks made by prominant cultural figures such as Mr Chomsky and Mr Kutcher. She is very clever in the way she has associated their names with hers in the past week.
That skill set is part of what makes her dangerous.
Kids have nothing to do with their political parent. Grow up

ReplyDeleteCertainly all this is true. But there’s also an elite (?) group that thinks she’s sort of the court jester who speaks truth to power (Noam?). Short of her life being ripped apart and all the creepy scandals exposed, I don’t think they’ll turn against her. I don’t think they would ever vote for her, and they would NEVER give her money, but they might keep egging her on for amusement, not realizing she could actually be dangerous.
That cougar won’t stay home unless she’s confronted with major weaponry. A part of me gives her credit for that, but she’s on the wrong side of history AND morality.
Guess I'm coming from the opposite fringe, the ones who think Game Change is overly sympathetic to someone who deserves little, if any, sympathy. It does a great job with the objective information from interviews with McCain staff and from the book, Game Change; but then it veers into the unverifiable mythology of Palin's Going Rogue. Didn't Moore explain during one interview that they deliberately went to Palin's narrative, desperately looking to find some way to make her a sympathetic figure? IMers know better than to buy into the syrupy family scenes. And we easily see Palin's mental health issues though they're portrayed in an opaque way which is open to a number of interpretations.
ReplyDeleteStill, I loved the movie and I can't wait to see The Butler.
Palin's greatest advantage has always been that it is exceedingly difficult for rational people to believe that the citizens of Alaska elected a governor who was/is mad as a hatter and dumb as a bag of hammers.
ReplyDeleteI watched Game Change with a group of people who knew nothing about Palin aside from what they'd seen on T.V. To them, the film was shocking news. Had they been treated to a heftier dose of facts, they would not have been able to absorb it.
As it was, Game Change managed to blow them away. And for that I am grateful.
Someone else said it, but bears repeating.
ReplyDeleteSarah should be locked in a room, and made to watch, 'Game Change', over and over and over again, till she gets it!
O/T but Gryph, I'm curious what this is based on? Is it something recent? What's the scoop? Are you going to see it? I remember you do like the thriller/horror movie good genre, but maybe this is too close to 'home'.

I might Netflix it.
When Richard Nixon resigned from office, 15% of the country was convinced that he was innocent and had no connection with Watergate that he had been hounded from office. Recently, more people in Louisiana thought that Obama was at fault for the slow response to Katrina-- when Obama was not president at the time. There will always be a fringe that believes what it wants, regardless of the truth. They are also the same people who continue to think that any portrayal of Palin is prejudiced.

ReplyDeleteSarah Palin Praises Ashton Kutcher’s ‘Inspiring’ Speech: Making Work ‘Cool Again’
Sarah Palin joined Greta Van Susteren Friday night to talk about a whole range of big issues, but one piece of news Palin was really happy about was Ashton Kutcher‘s speech at the Teen Choice Awards touting the value of hard work. Palin applauded Kutcher for “speaking truth to power” in a room full of young people, especially considering how rarely people hear that kind of message from Hollywood.
Palin called it “beautiful” and “inspiring,” expressing hope that Kutcher would help make hard work “cool again.” She attributed the message to Kutcher’s “heartland roots” and said more.
Conservatives have been gushing over Kutcher’s speech, though CNN’s Don Lemon found it odd many of them only see hard work as a conservative value.

ReplyDeleteAlaska May Expand Definition Of 'Family' To Include Gay Partners, Granting Them Key Benefits
The Alaska State Personnel Board is considering including same-sex partners of state employees in the definition of "immediate family" for purposes of leave.
A proposed change in rules also would allow state employees to take leave due to a serious health condition of a same-sex partner.
Same-sex marriage is not legal in Alaska because of a state constitutional amendment. Nancy Sutch, a deputy director within the state Division of Personnel and Labor Relations, said by email that the proposed change in rules stems from a recent review of a 2005 Alaska Supreme Court decision.
That decision, in a case over health insurance and other benefits, found it is unconstitutional to offer valuable benefits to the spouses of public employees but not to same-sex domestic partners.
Sutch said the proposed regulations will set out requirements that are similar to those for insurance coverage, which have been in effect since 2006. Fuller descriptions of the proposed changes were not immediately available.
Same-sex partners of state employees currently can qualify to be on their insurance, provided certain requirements are met. For example, couples must certify, among other things, that they've been in committed, exclusive relationships for at least the past year and plan to continue that relationship indefinitely. They also must have lived together for at least a consecutive year and consider themselves to be members of each other's immediate family.
For purposes of personal leave, though, the current definition of immediate family does not include same-sex partners.
The new proposal comes after attorneys, including those from the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska, wrote in June to the commissioners of Corrections and Administration on behalf of a Juneau corrections officer who was seeking to take family leave to care for her partner, who was undergoing cancer treatment in Seattle. Sutch said the review of the court decision was prompted by this case.
She said the board will not be deciding whether same-sex couples are entitled to take leave under the Alaska Family Leave Act but rather deciding on the criteria that same-sex couples must meet to be eligible for leave.
Tom Stenson, legal director for ACLU of Alaska, said Friday that "you don't have to be a great humanitarian or anything to realize people need support at those times and that is what the law is there to protect. People shouldn't have to suffer through cancer alone because they're gay."
He said there's often criticism that gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people are demanding special rights. But, "this is such a basic human right, to be able to support somebody when they're getting medical treatment. It's so fundamental it's hard for me to see what the counter argument is."
The personnel board plans to consider the changes at a Sept. 19 meeting in Anchorage.

ReplyDeleteNow WHY do you think that is? A little too close to home, was it? And the Emmys won...oh yes, that brought out even more. Why? Because it was an accurate depiction and, albeit sympathetic/empathetic in Strong's mind, Schmidt and Wallace no doubt have PTSD to this very day every time she opens her mouth. Listen to what they say but "don't" concerning her when asked. If you can understand politically correct language, they speak volumes.
