Ted Cruz has just learned that he has dual citizenship. In response Donald Trump's hair has wrapped itself around his neck and is trying to strangle him to death. Update!

Well fuck me.
Courtesy of the Dallas News:

Born in Canada to an American mother, Ted Cruz became an instant U.S. citizen. But under Canadian law, he also became a citizen of that country the moment he was born.

Unless the Texas Republican senator formally renounces that citizenship, he will remain a citizen of both countries, legal experts say.

That means he could assert the right to vote in Canada or even run for Parliament. On a lunch break from the U.S. Senate, he could head to the nearby embassy — the one flying a bright red maple leaf flag — pull out his Calgary, Alberta, birth certificate and obtain a passport.

“He’s a Canadian,” said Toronto lawyer Stephen Green, past chairman of the Canadian Bar Association’s Citizenship and Immigration Section.

The circumstances of Cruz’s birth have fueled a simmering debate over his eligibility to run for president. Knowingly or not, dual citizenship is an apparent if inconvenient truth for the tea party firebrand, who shows every sign he’s angling for the White House.

“Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen,” said spokeswoman Catherine Frazier. “To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship.”

The U.S. Constitution allows only a “natural born” American citizen to serve as president. Most legal scholars who have studied the question agree that includes an American born overseas to an American parent, such as Cruz.

The Constitution says nothing about would-be presidents born with dual citizenship.

I am just sitting here eating my popcorn and waiting to see how the Teabaggers, who LOVE Ted Cruz, are going to handle this. Because watching them trying to rationalize this, after what they did to President Obama, is going to be very entertaining!

I wonder how President Obama is reacting to the news?

Seems appropriate.

Update: Now Cruz has decided that he needs to renounce his Canadian citizenship:

“Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship,” Cruz said in a statement. “Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.”

I am really loving this story, for no other reason than to hear birthers backpedaling like crazy in order to rationalize why THIS is different than their Obama birth certificate witch hunt.

Here is my favorite line from this  Washington Post article.

“Given the raft of stories today about my birth certificate, it must be a slow news day,” Cruz said.

Seriously?  Somewhere you just know there are Right Wingers whose brains are exploding.

You gotta go over to MaddowBlog today to read the comments on their site about this news story. I haven't laughed so hard in quite a while. Did you know Cruz's father was a Cuban who fought with Fidel Castro?

To The Nasty Liberal, Cruz's father was jailed by the Batista, so when he got out, he fought WITH Castro. Later, he claimed that he didn't know that Castro was a communist. But brother Raoul and their BFF, Che Guevera were also part of the revolutionary forces, and they were outspoken communists.

To TheNastyLiberal 6:48: Cruz's father Rafael fought WITH Fidel Castro after being imprisoned by Batista. He 'voted' in favor of Castro before 'voting' against him. Rafael Cruz is now a pastor in north (read: white, affluent) Dallas, just gave a fiery anti-Obama speech to the Family Leadership Summit (a GOP 'family values' group) in Iowa, where he called on other pastors to also get politically involved, and where, just coincidentally, son Ted is also campaigning. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/08/12/sen-ted-cruzs-dad-makes-fiery-anti-obama-speech/

Ted Cruz just told another whopper. Not just a lie: he never does that. When he tells a fib, it is always a gargantuan one. One so big that no one would dare to question it. After all, would a top-of-the-class Harvard Law School graduate whose daddy is a north-Dallas pastor, and who looks you squarely in the eyes like a big puppy dog, lie? Well, in the case of Ted Cruz, the answer is, always, yes. That's what he does best and with great ease even though, probably without exception, he is smart enough and informed enough to know that he is lying at the time (which is why he's sure to be the GOP 2016 candidate).

Here's what he told Mary Matalin, sitting in for Laura Ingraham, on the air just yesterday: “I think it is disgraceful that President Obama, in just a lawless move, just exempted Congress [from Obamacare].” IOW, Cruz is claiming not only that Obamacare does not cover Congress, but that Obama – illegally (as though, as President, he had any Constitutional power to do such a thing) – exempted Congress from it.

The lie Cruz told to Matalin yesterday is a BALDFACED lie. Starting January 1, every person in Congress, and all their aides, will have to get their health care from one of the Obamacare healthcare exchanges. Senator Charles Grassley snuck this provision into the law because he presumed that, with this poison pill, Congress would not pass the law. The democrats called his bluff, and passed it anyway (probably assuming that, if Congress lost its current fairy godmother healthcare coverage and had to go under Obamacare, they would rally behind it).

Love, love, love how he blames it on the Dallas Morning News and "the raft of stories about my birth," and "assuming it is true that I could be a Canadian citizen."

Blaming the media for reporting FACTS, incontrovertible facts, but making it sound as though the media's either made up this story, (which may or may not be "true," according to Cruz) or is being mean and nasty by reporting it, puts all the onus on the one arm of our society which is supposed to report facts, without bias.

And the bit about how his father fought with Castro but didn't know that Castro was a Communist -- LOL. A little research will show that either the elder Cruz was a moron, or he, legitimately, hated the Batista regime so much that he'd align himself with the only legitimate opposition -- Fidel Castro, who'd been palling around with Che Guevara in Mexico.

    Ted is toast.

The birth certificate looks the same as mine from Calgary. Sorry, but it's real. Personally I am PROUD of my dual citizenship. But to say an educated man didn't know where he was born is hilarious. Rafael is NOT a natural born citizen and ineligible for the office of the US presidency.

Anyone can have dual or even three citizenships, 8:54 -- and be proud of them!
But I wager you're not hoping to be the President of the United States, to be Commander in Chief of all our Armed Forces, and make treaties with foreign powers?

If so, we'd expect you to pick one (1) citizenship and stick with that one. Ted Cruz, even as a U.S. Senator making laws for U.S. citizens, has not seen fit to become a full-fledged U.S. citizen.
      That's the problem!

    5. Anonymous1:46 PM

Anon I totally agree with you, but the ONLY office in the USA that requires you to be a natural born citizen is that of the presidency. But everytime I have enrolled in a school, applied for a job and applied for my passport I have had to show my BC and guess what, it listed where I was born. For him to say he didn't know he was a citizen of Canada is ridiculous. Though I am wondering, since I am a Native American, if I could run for the presidency, the government has it on record for centuries of my families land they stole.

Ted Cruz says he hasn’t misled about his father’s exodus from Cuba
      By Robert T. Garrett
      rtgarrett@dallasnews.com
      6:00 am on October 25, 2011

CLARIFICATION: On some occasions since 2005, Ted Cruz has publicly mentioned the date of his father’s departure from Cuba and even the fact he fought on the same side as Fidel Castro. However, in the past two months, the newspaper found no instances in which he offered audiences any clues that his father was a pre-Castro exile.

Texas U.S. Senate hopeful Ted Cruz often ends his speeches with a story about how his father fled Cuban oppression.

But what the stumping GOP Senate candidate hadn’t clarified, until asked by The Dallas Morning News this week, was that his father departed for the U.S. in 1957, more than a year before Fidel Castro came to power.

“Y’all know my heart,” Ted Cruz told the Austin Republican Women last month. “My dad fled Cuba. He was imprisoned and tortured as a teenager, and came to Austin penniless, seeking freedom. The reason I’m running is simple. He fled oppression once. And you have my word that I’ll fight every day to protect freedom here, so that none of us have to flee oppression a second time.”

Cruz hasn’t incorrectly described when his father fled from Cuba, as has U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. According to the Washington Post, Rubio said on three occasions since 2006 and on his official Senate website that his parents came to the U.S. after Castro’s forces overthrew Batista in January 1959. They actually arrived here in May 1956, the Post said.

Cruz, though, has remained silent as journalists and political activists incorrectly placed his father among the many Cubans who left the island nation after Castro took power, rather than as someone who fought on the same side as Castro to topple a rightist dictator, though he departed for Texas before the revolution succeeded.

“He was a guerilla, throwing Molotov cocktails and blowing up buildings,” Ted Cruz told the Austin American-Statesman for a profile published in January 2006.

“He’s the combination of the intellectual skill and principle of [Utah GOP Sen.] Mike Lee and the story, the personal story of a Marco Rubio — his dad having escaped Fidel Castro, came into the United States, working as a dishwasher,” Shackelford said.

Last month, a Houston Chronicle political blog described Cruz as “a Cuban American whose family escaped from Castro tyranny.”

In an interview Monday, Cruz professed not to be aware of confusion about when his father, Rafael Cruz, left Cuba.

“If Kelly [Shackelford] said that, I did not notice that statement,” he said. “That’s certainly not something I say because it’s not the case.”

      Cruz said he hasn’t misled.

“I have many, many times described the full context of his fighting with [Fidel] Castro — in the broader sense, … not side by side, but on the same side as Castro,” he said.

Shackelford, reached on Monday, said his point was the elder Cruz “came here for freedom” after being a “political prisoner.”

Shackelford, reached on Monday, said his point was the elder Cruz “came here for freedom” after being a “political prisoner.”

“As to whether it was [Fulgencio] Batista or Castro [in power,] I’m like, it doesn’t really matter,” Shackelford said. “There was one dictator replaced by a future dictator.”

Cruz, a former state solicitor general enjoying tea party and social conservative support, is one of four major Republican candidates in the March primary to succeed retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

He said his father began fighting against Batista’s regime when he was 14, in 1953. When the elder Cruz was 17, he was imprisoned and tortured by Batista’s government, his son said. The next year, 1957, Rafael Cruz legally went to Texas on a student visa issued by the Batista regime, Ted Cruz said.

Ted Cruz, who opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, said at no time was his father an illegal immigrant. He said his father, who graduated from the University of Texas in 1961, eventually became a permanent legal resident. The elder Cruz is now a U.S. citizen, living in Carrollton, his son said.

Ted Cruz said his father described himself as among young teenage boys who fought Batista and allied with Castro’s forces because “they didn’t know Castro was a Communist, what they knew was that Batista was a cruel and oppressive dictator.”

Cruz said his father became a staunch critic of Castro, along with several family members who remained in Cuba, when the rebel leader took control and began seizing private property and suppressing dissent. Rafael Cruz’ younger sister and their parents eventually made it to the U.S. during the 1960s, Ted Cruz said.

Oh My! Ted Cruz didn't need to make any friends to pal around with terrorists. Sounds like Ted Cruz's father did the same thing many undocumented workers from other countries have done here in the US: overstay a student visa after graduating. How did Rafael then get a work permit in Canada without being a US citizen? His story, as told by his son, Ted, has lots if holes in it. But Ted is clear about the fact that his father was a violent terrorist who helped Castro and the communists overthrow Batista's government (which had diplomatic relations with the US) and help the murderous Castro regime take control of Cuba.

Ted Cruz is worried that he isn’t enough of an American to satisfy the tea party wing of the Republican Party. This is why Cruz had to go birther on himself and proclaim that he is the most American American that has ever lived in America, even though he was born in Calgary.

The problem is that the half Canadian modern day Joseph McCarthy wants to be president in the worst way. He has his eyes on the Republican nomination, and he is terrified that his party won’t nominate a half breed patriot. This is the real reason why Sen. Cruz is performing the birther equivalent of wrapping himself in the flag while French kissing a George Washington impersonator.

ABC Tries to Con America Into Believing that Sarah Palin Will Run for President

The mainstream media refuses to give it up. ABC News is trying to fool people into believing that Sarah Palin will be a presidential candidate. Check out this graphic and see it for yourself.

Before RNC Chairman Reince Priebus was interviewed on This Week, ABC aired a pre-recorded video package with the announcer saying at the end, “There’s no shortage of prospective Republican candidates, and that makes it even more challenging for the party to resolve its ideological divide.”

So let’s take a look at who ABC News thinks is a potential Republican presidential candidate:

    IMAGE

...The lamestream media has got to stop helping Sarah Palin run her con game.

When her SarahPAC starts running low on cash, like clockwork Palin begins rumbling that she might run for some office. Few in the mainstream press seem to notice that Palin spends virtually none of the money that her PAC raises on promoting and donating to candidates. The vast majority of SarahPAC’s expenditures go towards funding Sarah Palin’s lifestyle.

Responsible media outlets need to stop furthering the illusion that Sarah Palin will ever run for anything again. Promoting Palin is just as irresponsible as promoting Donald Trump’s annual Apprentice promotional tour disguised as a presidential campaign. It is necessary to to discuss what Trump and Palin because they speak to the narrow minded bigots in the Republican Party, but the media can do so without feeding into their agenda of greed and personal financial gain.

Sarah Palin is a potential presidential candidate in the same way that the ghost of Ronald Reagan and Curt Schilling bloody sock are presidential candidates. In other words, she isn’t a potential presidential candidate. Alaska doesn’t want her. The nation doesn’t want her, and the media needs to stop bitterly clinging to the idea that washed up has been Sarah Palin has any kind of future in politics.

No matter how much the media keeps pushing the myth of a Palin comeback, it is never going to happen.

9:40 The Republican Party (Teabaggers included) is putting up names that are going to make them look like they did last go around for POTUS. Their debates were ridiculous and I see the same scenario approaching us AGAIN.

Republican are anti women and racists!

Hillary Clinton will beat the shit out of them...they have no one that measures up to her experience. I hope she runs and doesn't say she is going to for another year They are already trying to crucify her just like they have President Obama since before 2008!

Harvard Law School grad Cruz is such a genius, he never noticed that he was born in Canada , before ?
    Or the implications ?
Some say his Viva Castro ! father also gives him Cuban citizenship .
BTW- I thought that the Tea Party / Limbaugh / Palin cabal
    despised all Northeasterners and
    especially people who graduated
from colleges in the Northeast ?
There's another oddity on Cruz's birth certificate.
He has always claimed his mother was named Eleanor Darragh
and she had an Italian mother
    and an Irish father.
The name of his mother on the Canadian birth certificate
is listed as the very WASPY Eleanor Elizabeth Wilson.
Wilson is not an Irish name nor
is Eleanor Elizabeth an Italian name.
What happened to the Darragh or is that another Cruz fable ?
    As Desi would say ,
" Raphael, you got some splainin to do ! "
Cruz just looks shifty and acts weird and it's easy to see
why he gives so many people, especially women,
    the Cruz Creeps.
He sets off skin crawling alarm bells on an instinctive level.
When he wandered by the women's dorms at Princeton
( yet, another evil Northeastern school !!! ) in his paisley
bathrobe, I bet it was open.
Now wonder El Pimpo and La Imbecile love him so much.

Cruz needs to do more than renounce Canadian citizenship, tell a story about his father's immigration to the U.S. and his mother being born in Delaware. He needs to document the facts.

Turns out his citizenship depends on whether his mother was a U.S. citizen who lived in the U.S. for "at least ten years at some time in his or her life prior to the birth, at least five of which were after his or her [the mother's] 14th birthday."

By Sean Sullivan, Published: AUGUST 19, 9:19 AM ET

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), the frontrunner in the race for governor, on Sunday responded to but did not apologize for a tweet thanking a supporter who called state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) an “idiot” and “Retard Barbie.”

On Saturday, Jeff Rutledge, who describes himself in his Twitter profile as a “TEXAS Publisher, debater, & attorney,” tweeted the following:

@GregAbbott_TX would absolutely demolish idiot @WendyDavisTexas in Gov race – run Wendy run! Retard Barbie to learn life lesson. #TGDN @tcot

Abbott responded to the tweet, writing back:

    @GregAbbott_TX

    @jefflegal @tcot -- Jeff, thanks for your support. #TGDN

That set of a flurry of criticism, including from the Democratic Governors Association. On Sunday, Abbott sent another tweet saying he does not endorse “offensive language.”

Abbott’s spokesman told the Dallas Morning News that the attorney general writes all of his own Twitter messages.

Davis, who became a national figure after a marathon filibuster of legislation to tighten abortion restrictions, has said she will either run for reelection or for governor in 2014. She told supporters Friday she is “very, very seriously considering” a gubernatorial run.

  29. So the brilliant Senator Ted Cruz didn't know ~ didn't even suspect ~ that because he was born in Canada that he might also too be a citizen of Canada? Glad the Dallas Morning News told him. Reminds me of Palin's "I'll keep doing it until the Court tells me I can't". In Cruz's case, it was "I'll not mention it until I'm forced to then I'll pretend I didn't know".

    What a creep.

  30. Ted Cruz's father didn't become an American citizen until 2005. So, Ted Cruz was born in Canada to a American citizen mother and a Cuban citizen father. So wouldn't Ted be a citizen of Cuba as well as America and Canada?

Also, too, Ted says his father was "...imprisoned by Battista", but also "came to America on a student Visa". Cruz is asking us to believe that Battista released Senor Cruz (senior) from prison and handed him a student visa? I say BS.

Canadian Ted Cruz Mangles the Constitution By Getting Obama Impeachment Wrong

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is really not as dumb as he acts, which makes the things he says and does even more egregious because he knows better. He pulled a fast one on Republicans last night at a Montgomery County GOP dinner, telling them that they can’t impeach Obama unless they get the Senate under Republican control.

An audience member asked Cruz, “Why don’t we impeach him [Obama]?” reported the National Review based on their audio of the event.

“It’s a good question,” Cruz responded, “and I’ll tell you the simplest answer: To successfully impeach a president you need the votes in the U.S. Senate.”

Cruz then slyly noted that the Democrats control the Senate. Saying they need votes in the Senate to impeach Obama is a super clever way of getting out the vote, even if it is a lie. In order to impeach Obama, Republicans would need the House of Representatives, which they already have.

The House of Representatives has the sole power of impeaching. The Senate has the sole power to convict. To impeach, you need the votes in the House.

Let that sink in as the conservatives twitch.

Why haven’t Republicans done it? Because they know there is no reasonable basis upon which to impeach Obama other than what passes for reason on the right — but being President while black is not going to fly for the rest of the country. We impeach for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Republican Presidential candidates tried to garner support by telling their base they would repeal ObamaCare on their first day in office, even though as President they could not just undo the law. Meh. Constitution — not worth the paper it’s written on.

Now they’re going to use impeaching Obama to try to get out the vote for the Senate, even though Cruz later admitted to the National Journal that he would not pursue impeaching Obama even if they had the House and the Senate, because they couldn’t win that fight.

I told you he wasn’t stupid.

If Republicans are dumb enough to fall for yet another big lie that is easily fact checked, they deserve Ted Cruz, even if he doesn’t follow through on his birtheresque promise to revoke his Canadian citizenship. Yes, all parties use anger at the other side to get out the vote and get donations flowing; for example, Democrats have raised quite a tidy sum off of Sarah Palin’s insane screeches.

But Ted Cruz is a sitting U.S. Senator who just lied about impeaching a President who has done nothing to get him impeached.

Luckily for Ted, mangling the Constitution is just sort of what Republicans do these days, so getting it wrong is no biggie. I mean, gosh, he’s only in the Senate, why should he know what they actually do?

Obama Family Gets a New Puppy, Daily Caller Says: “The Obamas Do Not Have Any White Dogs”

    Unbelievable

Of course the right wing is losing their marbles again because the Obama family has a new puppy. That’s absolutely normal for them and totally expected.

But the Daily Caller takes it into flat-out racist territory: The Obamas Got a New Puppy, Everyone!

“A Portuguese Water Dog can range in cost wildly. On average, one will pay between $1,400 and $2,000. President Barack Obama has this breed of animal,” according to an answer on Ask.com.

With the addition of Sunny, the Obamas now have two black Portuguese water dogs.

The Obamas do not have any white dogs."

Remember though — there’s no racism on the right. At all. Ever. Totally made up by the left, who are the true racists.

Revoking Ted Cruz’s Canadian Citizenship May Take 8 Months

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) may not wish to be a Canadian citizen, but he'll likely carry the honor for some time longer.

The Lone Star State conservative, who announced Monday that he plans to renounce his dual Canadian citizenship, must "win security clearance from Canada's spy agency, fill in a four-page form and then wait up to eight months to sever his ties to America's northern neighbor," Reuters reported Tuesday.

Cruz released his birth certificate Sunday confirming that the tea party favorite was born Dec. 22, 1970 in Calgary, Alberta, but because he was born to an American mother he also instantly became an American citizen.

Ted Cruz is trying to nip Cruz birtherism in the bud by releasing his birth certificate and renouncing his Canadian citizenship — though the de-Canadaization process could take up to eight months. Cruz was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, so he is an American citizen. But that is not good enough for some birthers. The GOP's winking not-quite-embrace of birther movement and the nativism it represents is not without consequence. At the core of birtherism is the sense that an outsider has infiltrated the nation and clawed his way to illegitimate power in order to serve foreign interests. For a party that is worried about its standing with Latino voters, it's not a good look.

Cruz is one of the most famous Latino Republicans in public office, and unlike fellow Latino Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, he hasn't infuriated the conservative base by supporting a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Even so, Cruz has to deal with suspicion from conservative voters that he's disqualified to be president because of where his dad was born.

Would he have Cuban citizenship through his father also? Where is all the outrage against him????? He is not a natural born citizen. He has citizenship because his mother was a citizen. He was born in Canada. There is a difference. Natural born means they were born on US soil. Since when does anyone with a education not know when born in another country and have a parent a citizen of the Us that the would have dual citizenship? What are anchor babies, that they complain about? We need to know all about any free healthcare the family got while in Canada, since he doesn't want any of us to have healthcare! They are all such hypocrites

  41. So Cruz, born in Canada is an American citizen because he Mother was an American.

But Obama, born in Hawaii to an American Mother is not an American citizen because his Father was Kenyan?

By their twisted logic if Cruz is American then so is Obama because no matter where he was born HIS MOTHER WAS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN.

I just wish their heads would explode already.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous8:58 PM

Here's the problem whenever anyone claims American citizenship through the mother: you have to prove the mother, Eleanor Darragh (maiden name), was married to the father at the time of the child's birth if the birth occurred before 1986. Considering both Rafael Sr and Mrs. Wilson were married with children ("Ted" has 4 half-sisters) when they hooked up, to understand Cruz's citizenship status we need to know when or if his parents divorced their previous spouses and when or if they ever married BEFORE his birth. Now if "Ted" Cruz is as smart as he would like us to believe, he knows that showing us his Canadian birth certificate does not answer the real question: what was his mother's marital status at the time of his birth? All the birth certificate does is confirm that at one time his mother's name was Mrs. Wilson.

I know how you liberals hate FACTS, but try to stay with me here. This is going to require you to think AND comprehend.

Here is the U.S. FEDERAL LAW for people born between December 23, 1952 and November 13, 1986 (Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. was born in 1961, Ted Cruz Dec 22, 1970):

"When one parent was a U.S. citizen and the other a foreign national, the U.S. citizen parent must have resided in the U.S. for a total of 10 years prior to birth of the child with FIVE of the years after the age of 14.” Stanley Ann Dunham did not meet requisite status as she gave birth in Kenya at age 18, thus the Kenyan born Obama is not legit. Why else would he provide a fake birth certificate? (An independent forensic expert stated the odds of it being real at 1 in 62.5 quintillion (billion times a billion) http://www.wnd.com/2012/09/the-probability-os-birth-certificate-is-genuine/)

Cruz' American citizen mother, Eleanor Elizabeth Darragh Wilson, born in Delaware in 1935, a graduate of Rice University in 1957 who DID NOT GO TO CANADA UNTIL AFTER SHE GRADUATED, meets this requirement. For persons born out of wedlock (IF Cruz was), the person is a U.S. citizen if all the following apply:

the mother was a U.S. citizen at the time of the person's birth and the mother was physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year prior to the person's birth.

NOTICE THAT IT DOES NOT SAY "FOR ONE YEAR IMMEDIATELY PRIOR" TO THE BIRTH. Otherwise, a U.S. born, single mother, who had resided in the U.S. for 22 years, on vacation in a foreign country, who gives birth would not have U.S. citizenship for her child, which is ridiculous.

I know you liberals hate the FACTS, but learn the law next time before you come in here and make a fool of yourself.
