"Now we're not targeting minorities, we're targeting Democrats. If minorities get hit by shrapnel that just part of war." |
The state of Texas has a pretty amusing response to Attorney General Eric Holder's claims that the state's redistricting plans discriminate against minority voters.
"DOJ’s accusations of racial discrimination are baseless. In 2011, both houses of the Texas Legislature were controlled by large Republican majorities, and their redistricting decisions were designed to increase the Republican Party’s electoral prospects at the expense of the Democrats. It is perfectly constitutional for a Republican-controlled legislature to make partisan districting decisions, even if there are incidental effects on minority voters who support Democratic candidates."
Holder has asked the court to force Texas to get permission from the Justice Department before it makes any changes to its election laws. Texas has intentionally redrawn its Congressional districts to dilute the Hispanic vote, according to the Justice Department.
Yeah the Texas Republicans are not trying to keep minorities from electing who they want to office, just the Democrats.
And if that means that the Hispanics and African American people feel marginalized, well that's just gravy.
Gee don't we all feel much better now?
It is long past time for districts to be drawn by population, period. We have the computing power to do it. Any decisions requiring human input should be the responsibility of bi-partisan panels.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see this happen at least on the federal level.
Yeah, right.
ReplyDeleteThat's on a par with saying, "Trust me! I'll only put the head in!"
The Republican Mantra: "If we can't beat 'em, we cheat 'em."
ReplyDeleteSo many are members of that old law firm, Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe.
DeleteI'd forgotten that one or I would've used it here at IM a dozen times since '08. Thanks for the flashback.
DeleteWe really need to make politicians take a basic high school civics exam before eligible for political office. Think how much trouble it would have saved us in the last decade alone?!
ReplyDeleteYes, Texas is taking state action to prevent the free exercise of the First Amendment (right to associate with Democrats) by its own citizens. Will Texas legally get away with this? It's highly possible, given the composition of the US Supreme Court, and the fact that there is no law that precisely prevents political discrimination. I know, I know, it is as evil and unfair as all get-out, but until I see otherwise, I will assume that Texas will prevail on this. In prior days, when democrats held power there, they gerry-mandered, too, and they also got away with it. This is happening nationwide, and because the republicans have now got the upper hand in gerry-mandering, they may just gerry-mander their way into the White House –– even though they would surely fail to win it by popular vote. Gerry-mandering is the only reason they are still in control of the House of Representatives.
ReplyDeleteSo maybe all of us liberals in Texas should start voting Republican.
ReplyDeletePerry should be run out of TX on a steel rod and so should that jerk in Virginia who is under investigation!
ReplyDeleteTexas Democrats need to get out in full force and vote the Republicans out of office in their state! Austin is majority Democrats now - the state supposedly is turning blue! Yea! Could happen - will be fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteWTF?
ReplyDeleteThey've basically admitted they are intentionally denying Democrats the right to vote?
Really?
How PATRIOTIC of them.
Geez, makes me proud to be a Texan! Oh brother, please let Greg Abbott lose or get caught in a mega scandal!
