NRA lobbyist shoots elephant in the face and then celebrates manhood by drinking champagne.

Courtesy of the YouTube page:

NBC Sports network came under fire this week after it aired an NRA-sponsored program that included gun lobbyist Tony Makris shooting an elephant in the face and then drinking champagne. Deadspin noted on Tuesday that the Botswana hunt had aired during this week's episode of Under Wild Skies.

Makris is a longtime friend of NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre and is best known for orchestrating Charlton Heston's rise within the organization.

In a video of the hunt, Makris spots an elephant in the brush, walks up and shoots it in the the face twice. After a short chase, Makris fires again and the elephant is dead. The NRA lobbyist then takes a moment to pose with his .577 "Tyrannosaur" rifle and the dead pachyderm.

As the episode ends, the group of hunters enjoys a glass of champagne while watching the sunset.

Yes, NOTHING will improve the reputation of the NRA like televising a hunt featuring one of their lobbyists, where he shoots a majestic elephant IN THE FACE.

I will have to assume that there were no kittens or puppies around for them to stomp to death.

This is BEYOND disgusting. Elephants are one of the most endangered species, due to poachers killing them ONLY for their ivory tusks. There's a huge black market for ivory and many countries have outlawed the importation of ivory.

On September 28, NBC Sports Network announced in a statement to Deadspin that Under Wild Skies has been canceled due to Makris' comments:

Under Wild Skies will no longer air on NBC Sports Sports Network due to the program's close association with its host, whose recent comments comparing his critics to Hitler are outrageous and unacceptable. NBCSN will continue to air all of our other quality outdoor programming.

How Freudian. The NRA kills the elephant and not the donkey.

I wonder if 21st century Republicans even know that their "mascot" is an elephant. Frankly I think that most elephants are too intelligent to want to have any connection with Republicans.

I recommend for them, and for all of us, George Orwell's essay "Shooting an Elephant."

I saw the picture the other day but couldn't really look at it. I could never watch the video. Elephants are among the most special creatures on the planet There was a photo on HP today of an elephant standing guard over a dead friend. Her trunk was wrapped around her friend's tusk. I'd like to see her trunk wrapped around this clown's neck.

Elephants are some of the most beautiful animals in the world and they are proven to be sensitive to others in their families.

This lobbyist should have the same thing done to him!!! He is a vile human being! Makes me sick to my stomach! I'll wager he is Republican too!

I wrote NBC over this and got a form letter apology saying they shouldn't have aired the program, then pointed out the legalities of the hunt. I don't think they get it.

This was the final straw for me and I will no longer be watching NBC in my home. Their programming sucks anyways; it's all stupid reality shows and tired old Law and Orders The one exception I am willing to make is MAYBE the Superbowl.

As far as Makris, maybe someday someone will decide to trophy hunt HIM! I think he'd look pretty cool stuffed and mounted on a wall somewhere. Oh but according to Mr Makris those of us who care about elephants are RACIST against other animals. Yep that was his defense, I'm not making it up, he said it. The stupidity continues......

I saw that "Elephant Mourning" post, and it was heartbreaking, yet assuring.
      Why, you ask?
The more we know about the DNA of all living beings, the more we should be aware that all of life upon and beneath this Blue Marble called Earth is connected.
We all seem to have evolved from the energy of the same stardust and we all shall go back to the Universe, when the form we currently inhabit dies... and for all it's worth, I am comforted by that apparent inevitability.
