So called "good guy with a gun" meets other good guys with guns, and badges. Does not end well for 2nd Amendment.

Courtesy of Dallas News:

Dallas police have confirmed that three officers shot and killed the homeowner who had fatally shot a burglar.

Officers responded to a call in the 10300 block of Plummer Drive in Far East Dallas. Witnesses said they saw a homeowner shoot and kill Jerry Hale in the alley. The suspect was evidently trying to break into the homeowner’s residence. Police arrived to find the armed man standing over the burglar’s body in an alley, police said.

They stopped an ambulance from entering the alley because the homeowner was still armed. Officers gave “loud verbal commands” to drop the gun.

After he refused, they shot him multiple times, police said. He died from his injuries. The homeowner has not been identified.

Ten to one that the dead burglar was unarmed.

Look I completely support a homeowner defending their home, but I cannot help but wonder what makes it okay to kill a man who was in an alley behind that home?

And as for that whole "stand your ground" thing, well apparently standing that ground when the police are telling you not to is NOT going to work out in your favor. But you know, sometimes when you are holding a gun, you feel invincible.

I hope to hell the resident was a Republican and an NRA member! One less MF'er!

Can't police use less than lethal force once in a while? Maybe shoot for the legs or something. Seems like at least the second death could be avoided.

all the cops saw and should have seen is a person with a gun standing over a body. they tell you to drop the gun, you better drop the gun. all they see; and should see, is that he all ready killed someone and and they could be next.

Umm, you're watching WAAAY too much tv there 4:01. These guys ain't Annie Oakley or the Lone Ranger, they're officers facing an unknown armed person who refuses to drop his gun. If you tell me, in that situation you'd be squinting and really carefully dialing in your aim on his kneecap while hoping he doesn't shoot first, then you have no sense of reality whatsoever.

The "suspect" they saw in the alley was armed and refusing to pit down his weapon. What did you want the officers to do? Engrave an invitation?

Gotta agree with 4:01 above & 8:51 below.

Seems like everything was handled until the cops showed up and killed a guy who defended his home. Is this the new definition of protect and serve?.. seems to be more often than not.

What part of "Drop the gun" didn't the homeowner understand? Unless he was hearing impaired or didn't speak the language, seeing three cops with their guns drawn would clearly communicate "Drop the gun" non verbally.

I have the same inkling the burglar wasn't armed,

And after the threat has been removed, why stand over the corpse?

    1. But who is providing the information as to what was said? I don't have much faith in these one sided stories as to what happens in such events - Zimmerman being a prime example, but the cops will always provide their version to make sure they come out as the good guys.

      @TS.

Point One: Only an IDIOT refuses to obey a legal order by the police - especially when they are ALL holding guns pointed at said idiot.

Point Two: Only an IDIOT doesn't know the police WILL order a person to drop a weapon (ANY WEAPON!), REGARDLESS of who is the perp or who is the defender, because they really haven't a clue upon arrival who is truly the perp and who is the homeowner. Their lives are at stake! They WILL order all weapons dropped!

Point Three: The dash cams of the police vehicles are running when they are on duty.

Point Four: There WILL be an investigation and the witnesses - remember those?, the ones who WATCHED the homeowner shoot the guy? - will be interviewed. Also, I would be shocked if people didn't stay and watch the entire thing even after the police arrived. People have morbid senses of curiosity and will do the damnedest things to sate that curiosity! And if you think that a police officer was trying to get the crowd back by forcibly MOVING them aside, you're not from my world. They would be totally centered on the guy with the gun. And even if there was an officer pushing them back, their ears still work. "Loud Verbal commands", remember?

Point Four: While there are some police officers who would attempt to cover up something like this, the overwhelming majority of them are determined to do what their oath asks of them.

Point Five: What you are insinuating is truly insulting to those officers described in Point Four. Are you one of those paranoids who trusts no one in government?

Point Six: EVEN THE DAMNED TV SHOWS HAVE THE POLICE ORDER WEAPONS DROPPED!!!!!!!

      The man was an IDIOT!

This was NOT one of "these one-sided stories" like Z. There WERE witnesses here - including dash cams and people - or can you not read, either?

First of all, Texas does NOT have a "standyour ground law" , though they have a law similar to "castle laws" that are around this country, meaning if you retreat in your home you may shoot in self defense. An alley is not retreating, nor is not listening to the police telling you multiple times to lay down your weapon. This was a just shooting of an idiotwith a weapon who refused to follow the laws.
BTW I have a conceal and carry for Texas and if an officer asks me to lay down my weapon it is my duty( beyond being the smart thing) to do.
George Zimmerman should have stuck around for a few weeks, my guess he would no longer be breathing.

Had the suspected burglar actually entered the man's home or was he just in the alley behind the yard? Many years ago there was an unarmed young teenager killed who had jumped over a fence into a back yard in the Detroit area. Whether he was intending to enter the house and rob it were never known because the owner of the house killed the boy. it happened before the "stand your ground" and "castle" laws were passed and is one reason why I am always suspicious of these defenses. How far afield can a person go to "stand his ground' or protect his "castle"? Unfortunately in this case no one will know the answer unless there were other witnesses to what had occurred - from the beginning of it.
