The Republicans don't let a little thing like voting to shutdown the government interfere with their need to P-A-R-T-A-Y!

Maybe it was the alcohol, or the late hour, or maybe the House Republicans have just completely lost their minds. On Saturday night, while they were trying to come up with some kind of magic bullet to kill Obamacare, they decided that not only were they going to shut down the government, but now they have added a “conscience clause” to the spending bill which takes away preventative care from women, which includes birth control.

Under Obamacare rules, birth control is free with most providers, but apparently the House Repubs have decided that the reproductive rights of American women are better off in their control. Yeah, so basically the GOP is saying that it doesn’t want the government involved in your health care…unless it’s a birth control issue, of course.

And before you go thinking that this attack on women was the only outrageous thing they did Saturday night, hold on, I’m afraid I have more to report. Friday afternoon, Republican John Culberson from TX got huge applause from his colleagues when he compared the GOP’s effort to destroy Obamacare to the heroes of 9/11. Culberson compared the House Repubs to the passengers on United Flight 93 who overtook the terrorists and got control of the plane on 9/11. Yes, Seriously.
And all of this was BEFORE they started drinking! As the evening wore on, reporters on the House floor were tweeting about the smell of booze in the room and obnoxious behavior more and more. Now, we all would expect that sort of thing from Boehner. I mean, come on, it was Saturday night, he’s John Boehner, of course he would be drunk….and orange. But I must admit that even I am a bit shocked that the others were hitting the bottle.
And JUST when I thought my opinion of the Republican party could simply not get any lower.

  1. That is without a doubt the most revolting picture of John Boener I have ever seen, but it certainly sums up what he and the Republican party have become. Unbelievable!

"Although China, Japan, and other major creditor nations have no dog in the Obamacare fight, they have a strong interest in preserving America’s basic financial, economic, and social stability. From their point of view, the Tea Party contingent is not following the script and a corrective may be necessary."

If Cruz wrote "you're move" I'm wondering about all those Ivy league degrees that prove he's brilliant. Not that I hadn't wondered before. And drinking on the job? Nice guys. Way to do your jobs. For the Kochs..did they supply the booze too?

    1. Sally, I noticed the same thing about the "you're" and "your". I wish Eichenwald could have copied Cruz's tweet. These people are morons.

Sally -- I was struck by the same thing. All that elite education and Cruz doesn't know basic -- I mean basic, folks -- grammar.
Plus, he doesn't know chess. I'll bet he'd set up a checkerboard wrong, too. Now dominoes -- that's the national past time in Cuba.

    3. Cruz's tweet was hash tagged "YourMove" so he's off the hook for that.

But not for being a traitorous soulless lying demagogue.

  5. Please let this make the national news. Words can't expressed how disgusted I am that they were doing this dirty work after and while drinking!
In many other jobs, they would be FIRED! Shame on them, and thanks for standing up for women, Gryphen!

"Under Obamacare rules, birth control is free with most providers..."

NO! Insurance premiums are paid by the insured. There is no co-pay for certain services, including contraception. No co-pay is not the same as free.

This is just one example of a messaging problem that opened the door for the GOP lies and fear-mongering. I think the worst part of the hysteria is the lie that the ACA is a government takeover of healthcare...and DEATH PANELS. This would have been avoided completely or greatly minimized if, day one, Pres. Obama and the Democratic Party framed the ACA as 'private health INSURANCE reform/regulation' rather than 'healthcare reform'.

I realize I'm being pissy and picky but I'm not apologizing unless I can be convinced I'm wrong. I'm furious with the GOP over all this and irritated that the Dems brought confusion to the most basic elements of the law.

But...relief is coming in less than 2 hours. Thank you, Breaking Bad!

    1. Well, considering that previous to this birth control wasn't covered at all so you had to pay the ENTIRE thing. Not a co pay or even credited toward your deductible. It was ALL on you.

So yeah, I'd consider it "free" now even though technically it isn't.

But the GOP goes bat crap crazy over 'free' anything. So calling it free when it isn't opens the door for them to whine about how women shouldn't get free anything, and contraception is evil, and if we stop 'government paid abortion' (which doesn't exist) we have to stop employers who don't believe in contraception from paying for it " (they never did,) See the problem? They twist and turn everything to make government (who pays their salaries) into the BIG EVIL, when it is government that paves our roads, watches our neighborhoods, teaches our kids, runs our libraries and museums..yeah, it is SO bad. I am so furious I sent my GOP rep a letter last night and complained about the drunken partying when people are hurting. Not that he'll care. He's been there 20 plus years and lives in a very red area of Michigan. I'm hoping we can finally run someone against him next year and stop letting these fascist creeps ruin America.

I'm with you, and I still don't like it when POTUS himself talks about "free" benefits of ACA. Purchasers will end up surprised when they realize, yes, there is a PREMIUM, and COPAYS, and DEDUCTIBLES, just like before, but some benefits (like those related to reproductive health) will not be charged for.

In the end, the reason it's all a BIG EVIL is because it's brought to us by a black man, and what could be more evil than that???!!! I hope the whole thing is a smashing success.

You would think that congress that only works 129 days a year, drinks on the job, will not do the work of the people. Not 1 one job bill, only taking everything away from common folk. Will not give up on undoing anything that the President gets passed. ,They are after, Medicare, Social Security Corporations regulations, You would think they would be that doesn't would get fired. I wish when they pulled that stunt of a rally on the steps of congress yesterday, a mob would have met them and ran them out of town like the carpetbaggers they are. This Cruz guy he is such a hypocrite, and his father. They sucked up the Canadian healthcare and it was just fine. His father became a Canadian citizen. Ted was born in Canada. How many times did elder Cruz go back for his healthcare until 2005. He then became US citizen just in time to get Social Security and Medicare. He claimed that he was just lazy as to why he waited so long, but I think he just waited until he could get Medicare- hypocrite.
