Courtesy of the Saint Louis Post Dispatch:
According to a Capitol Police incident report, a Kahr CM9 9mm pistol – later claimed by House Speaker Tim Jones’ legislative assistant Dave Evans – was found on top of the toilet paper dispenser in a men's restroom in the Capitol basement Friday. The incident report states that the gun “was fully loaded with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine.”
Capitol police returned the gun to Evans after Jones’ secretary Lisa Bondurant called to report that it was misplaced. The incident report states that Evans didn't have paperwork for the gun with him, but he "offered a very detailed description of the weapon and the holster (and) was able to identify the weapon by the brand, caliber, color, size, the holster and the ammunition count and type that was in the weapon."
Evans did not immediately respond to a call from the Post-Dispatch on Monday.
No charges are expected in the incident.
A law passed in 2011 allows Missouri legislators and their staffers to have guns in the Capitol if they have concealed gun permits.
Seriously, no charges?
You leave a loaded weapon out in public where ANYBODY could pick it up (You know bad guys have to take a tinkle once in awhile too.) and there is no consequence?
If some child had picked it up and shot himself or another person would there be a legal response then?
In my opinion if a person, regardless of any concealed gun permits, leaves that weapon where it can fall into the hands of a non-licensed individual they should immediately be stripped of their right to have a concealed weapon on their person at the very least.
Don't you think?
I think the guy should have been arrested for endangerment. What if a child on a field trip to the capitol had happened upon that weapon?
ReplyDeleteOK, we know that people misplace their cell phones, their briefcases, and their glasses, but misplace a gun? Don't you usually carry that in a holster on your hip or on a shoulder strap? Was this dude changing into his super hero outfit and just forgot to strap on his firearm? Why does he need a gun in the capitol? Don't they have security?
ReplyDeleteGun people, there's no explaining them.
ReplyDeleteYou are right!
DeleteSeveral years ago a state representative here in PA went on vacation and asked a teenaged neighbor to water his plants or walk his dog or something. The rep had left a loaded gun out in the open. The teenager saw it and used it to commit suicide. No charges were filed against this good guy with a gun. And later that year, the rep was voted the most promising new legislator of the year by his colleagues.
ReplyDeleteWords fail...
DeleteUnbefuckinLIVEable
DeleteEvidently a conceal weapon permit does NOT require the licensee to have a brain.
ReplyDeleteSeems like there should be a point system similar to the one for driver's licenses. How about several gazillion points for leaving a loaded gun in a washroom where children could pick up the gun. At least some points for not being able to take a leak without losing track of your "other" weapon.
ReplyDeleteRight on!
DeleteNo Charges, of course.
ReplyDeleteThis happens more frequently than people think. It happened at my kid's high school during one of those "Career Day" things.
Kids getting killed from access to guns isn't and "accident" and neither is this.
Hey, I like your sentiments. We can play what if with all kinds of dangerous stuff.
ReplyDeleteYour pitbull or other large possibly aggressive dog gets loose, you go to jail and lose your right to own pets. Pitbulls are the assault weapon of the doggy world.
You leave your car unattended and it gets taken for a joyride..... you get arrested and lose your right to drive. Ditto if you let a teenager drive your car and they cause a wreck. And your keys must always be on your person or locked in a secure location.
You lose your cell phone, you get arrested and lose your right to own a phone. Cells can be used as timers for bombs.
Leave alcohol or prescription drugs unattended in your home, you get arrested and lose your right to drink or use prescription drugs. Children might get hold of them and misuse them and hurt themselves. Jail time doubles if you have a teenager in your home.
Leave cigarettes or other tobacco products unattended even butts in an ashtrays, you lose your right to smoke or chew and go directly to jail, "do not pass go". Most kids start smoking by stealing cigs from family members.
Yup, you're on to something.
Leave a loaded gun in a public washroom and lose nothing. Yup, you're on to something.
DeleteWhy not just hand each kid a loaded gun as they step off the field trip bus? Or equip every restroom at the state capitol with an array of gun types, all with ammunition, so the kiddies can shop around for the more lethal ones? Or staff the restrooms with gun nuts to help with gun selection?.
DeleteIt would be a whole new concept in "concealed" weapons. Might even win a prize at the next NRA convention.
Yup, you're on to something.
Failure to stop at a stop sign (even though the intersection is deserted), get a traffic ticket. Leave a loaded gun in a public restroom, no problem. I guess the difference has something to do with a a well-regulated militia.
