Another one of those liberal rags, this one called "The American Conservative," has blamed Ted Cruz for damaging the Republican party. Wait....

Source
Courtesy of The American Conservative:

Jonathan Bernstein considers what the pointless shutdown fight has done to Ted Cruz’s political prospects:

"It’s one thing to have a reputation as a loudmouth; it’s quite another to have a reputation as a loser. That’s what the shutdown fight has done to Cruz. Among true believers he’ll be the one who was a leader in a fight that surely would have won if the squishes hadn’t sold them out. But for most party actors, including many sympathetic to Tea Partyism, he’s going to be the guy who ran up the wrong hill."

It would have been different if Cruz’s gamble had been over a minor issue that drew little attention, but the purpose of the gamble all along seems to have been to turn Cruz into a national figure and link his name to some of the most important issues available. It succeeded in making him better known, but in every other respect it has backfired badly. More important, Cruz didn’t just misread the political landscape and support a strategy that had zero chance of success, but he did so in a way that maximized intra-party divisions, burned bridges with most of his colleagues, and distinguished himself as a self-seeking bomb-thrower who ended up helping to blow up his party’s own standing. Granted, Cruz didn’t do this all by himself, and there are many others that contributed to the mess the GOP finds itself in today, but he very much wanted to be identified as the leader of the effort, and now he will pay for it.

Cruz’s error was almost the exact reverse of the one that Rubio made on immigration. Rubio was paying too much attention to what people outside the GOP thought and wanted from an immigration bill, and for that reason he failed to see how much resistance there was in the House to any bill that Democrats would support. Cruz was so determined to ignore the views of anyone outside the party and even the views of many of those inside it that he led fellow Republicans into a disaster while remaining oblivious to the danger. Cruz’s debacle has been much more significant for the GOP because the party’s leaders ended up going along with his losing strategy.

Okay so with the American Conservative now piling on with the many others within the Republican party now speaking out, does that mean that the Republican party is now ready to clean house and rid itself of their teabagging insurgents?

(According to Rolling Stone that may be virtually impossible at this point.)

Or are the self inflicted wounds simply too deep, and rife with infection, for anything to save the patient? And do we now find ourselves at the pivotal moment when the country becomes a three party political system?

At least 60% of the country believes that introducing a third party is the only way to fix our broken political system. Though of course similar calls for a third party have cropped up numerous times in the country's past.

If that were to happen you KNOW that the energy for such a party would come solely from the rabid Right Wing which believes the Republicans are far too willing to compromise with the Democrats, in other words do their jobs, and would rather send representatives to Washington who were driven by stubborn ideology and complete distrust of government.

That does not exactly describe a viable framework for a third party, so perhaps despite rumblings for change and disgust with the status quo, things will continue in much the same fashion, until the Republicans finally get their unruly new members house broken, or the party devolves into a permanent minority party spending all of its time bitching about government but having little actual impact on governing.

Either one works for me.

Ted and the rag-tag freaks of the hard right were exploiting vets this morning in D.C. - looks like Sarah wore the same vest from New Egypt, but didn't wear 'the girls' this time. She made sure to wear a flag pin though.

Todd's wearing sunglasses in the drizzle. What's in it for him?

They should really stop blaming Cruz for the shutdown...it's really Boehner's fault. All he had to do was hold a vote on a clean bill. But he chose to listen to his masters, the special interest groups and tea party activists and stepped in line with Cruz. He's the effing Speaker of the House. He's third in line for the presidency, and is a congressional leader, he has an obligation to act like an effing adult and rise above the crazies.

I am a Canadian who is quite fascinated by the differences between the governing systems of your 2 party system and our multiparty system. If the Tea Party splits from the Republicans, or is thrown out, you will have a multiparty system.

Be careful what you wish for. If the Tea Party were to become a third party to split the right, you would indeed likely end up with a Democratic House. However, in multiparty systems such as we have in Canada, we often end up with "minority governments", where the 2 minority parties together can outvote the government. You could end up with a Democratic House with 40% of the votes, an "Official Opposition" of Republicans with 35% of the votes, and a "Balance of Power" held by the Tea Party with only 25% of the votes.

This works in Canada because it generates true compromise because if the 2 minority parties outvote the government, they immediately trigger an election which they often cannot afford. The result is that the smallest party may hold the "balance of power" meaning that it is in the government's and the smallest opposition party's interests to make deals to keep the country running, while the larger of the 2 opposing parties (the Official Opposition) can oppose anything they want without affecting anything.

Can you imagine a House where the Democrats were in power and the Republicans were the official opposition, with the Tea Party holding the balance of power? Would the Democrats have to appease the Tea Party to keep the government running? And what would happen in the US where your election dates are fixed? Do you even have a mechanism for triggering an early election if the 2 minority parties outvote the governing party? Would you still need 60% of votes to pass legislation, and if the Republicans and Tea Parties together had 60%, would you be better off than you are now, or would things be worse?

Your theory is based on a faulty supposition. The tea party is very very unpopular. There are very few congressional districts, even with the wonky republican district drawings, where a tea party person would be a republican and a democrat. They would, for sure, get ZERO senate seats and the republicans left in the party would be so bitter about their loss of power from these people that they would be more likely to vote with the democrats. All the sane people would stay Repiblicans and, thus, we could return to a system of government where both sides can talk to each other.

Less than 20 percent of voters identify as tea party. They are just really, really vocal and active. Whereas the rest of the country hardly votes, these people are probably there ninety percent of the time. They're reeking havoc not because they're so popular but because they have so much power in the republican primaries. If they weren't in on the republican primaries and had their own party, they would have ZERO power. This is why a democrat won a safe Republican district in an off-year election at the height of their power, because they split the GOP vote and let the democrat win. I think that was a trial run to see if they could effectively run without the GOP and they saw that they couldn't...

The scenario you propose makes on sense, but the Rethuglikans would be taking an awful chance, throwing in with the T-Baggers,as we now see. To side with them would be jumping feet first in a pit full of vipers. The more sensible coalition would therefore be with the Democrats. At least then there would be hope of compromise.

Gun fetish groups plan event in all 50 states on anniversary of Newtown elementary school massacre

“Gun advocates are planning the event to coincide with the anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which killed 26 people, mostly children.”

Po Murray, a Newtown mother with two kids who were once Sandy Hook students said, ”The gunman lived in my neighborhood. He lived 50 yards from my front door. For them to use that day to promote their agenda, it’s completely inappropriate in my opinion.”

Event organizers are concerned gun control advocates will use the day to push their beliefs so they want to counter that; to “show America that there is a good side to guns.”

On that day. That particular day. Holy cow.

Dave Workman, with the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, a co-sponsor of the event said, ”We are certainly aware that it’s going to hit a raw nerve with a lot of people. I think that possibly is one of the reasons we chose the day — to make sure that people understand that, while what happened last year was a horrible tragedy, there are many good things people do with firearms.”

Yea, they are all blaming Cruz, but I hope everyone is paying attention because ALL the Republicans in the House voted together in doing this!!

The John McCains, Lisa Murkowski, McConnell, Cantor, etc. ALL voted w/Cruz. ALL of these jerks are publically coming out AGAINST this and Cruz when in fact they are in support of it. They lie publically!!!

Just remember to vote as many Republicans as possible OUT of Congress when they are next up for reelection. The same should be done on the state and local levels across the nation too!! Pay attention to all of the Republican governors - they are NOT our friends or in support of the majority in the nation. Many are anti Obamacare (Parnell in Alaska, for example) and doing everything they can to block folks from applying for it!

And, remember that many of them are racists - setting up blockage for folks to vote in various states - they are NOT friends of the blacks, brown and Asian folks! (Or, to women!)

These Cruz / Palin crazies demanded a shutdown and now that they've gotten what they wanted ,
they're tearing down barricades because they're angry about the shutdown ???
    A shutdown is a shutdown is a shutdown .
What did these morons think was going to happen in their glorious shutdown ?
The Democrat Party has a perfect opportunity to entice disgusted rational Republicans
    and Indys to the ranks.
My Republicans friends and family are giving the Democrats a serious look .
The Republicans have , as the saying goes, let the camel get his nose under the tent
( or Palin's case , her camel toe ) and the Tea Party mental cases are now suffocating the GOP.
These Tea Party crazies despise the GOP , they say it over and over and over , from Limbaugh to Palin,
    Hannity, Levin, Cruz , etc.
Instead of kicking them out, the GOP patted them on the head and enabled them.
Without the protection and money from the GOP , the Tea Party will be in trouble.
So, the death of the GOP will be an overall positive.

The GOP won't be able to housebreak it's American Taliban tea party members who are on a religious quest and see their opponents as evil. They may be able to push them out of the party but they'll need to find a way to stop the tea party from redefining and co-opting the word 'conservative.' And the Democratic Party and media need to stop being timid about identifying religious extremism.

On the local news right now; Palin and Cruz speak in DC, followed by their deluded fans tearing down a gate around a federal monument and stomping all over it, loudly complaining about it being closed. T'ed Cruze and the Tea Party couldn't survive as a separate party. Not that I "care", but where have the so called "moderate Republicans" been since President Obama was elected? Today, Miss Lindsey actually admitted that framing the GOP argument (defund, repeal, replace, destroy) Obama Care was a HUGE mistake on the GOP's part because "People actually WANT Obamacare". Has anyone (except Fox News) linked Obamacare to the Government Shutdown lately? Where did that Republican drumbeat go?

What part of "Government Shutdown" didn't the assclowns understand when they "slimmed down Government? Don't take this the wrong way, I respect the vets, but what "good" does keeping monuments open do to people losing their income, safety net, dividends, safety, health and food? Monuments are nice and having them open help the local economy, but who owns the death panels that decide which monuments live and which die?
