I am a Whittier teacher.

Courtesy of the YouTube page:

Erika Thompson teaches grade school in Whittier, Alaska, a town where most people live and work in one building, and is only accessible by a miles-long tunnel with limited hours.

I thought that this little video about teaching in Alaska might be a nice change of pace.

Whittier is about 60 miles from where I am in Anchorage, and it is a very nice little community.

How very interesting! I did not know such a place existed. I imagine they all live in the same building to work for the same company. Good video find.

G what is the backstory on this town? What is the industry there? Do most of the people live in that Condo? Why a tunnel?
      Thanks. :)

  2. I lived in Whitter, in that building, one summer. I worked at the fuel tank "farm". That was before you could drive through the tunnels. We had to wait for the trains and drive our cars up on the flat rail cars and then ride the train in our cars to and from the town.

What's really funny, is that I didn't know immediately that this was the Currant, because $carah is so dumb that this sounded totally plausible.

A trollie is "valiantly" trying to make sure
all of us dumb PBO voters know that Sawah didn't say this.

Of course its useless to explain WHY we would even consider it to be true?

Waaaaay too Logan's Run. And why not have the tunnel open later? Sounds a bit uhm archaic and not quite bright.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whittier,_Alaska Yeah, sound like a great place to live - NOT. Have to wonder what the depression/suicide rate is. Never getting away form your neighbors? Literally being trapped in with them when tunnel is closed - sounds like a strict college dorm - and remember how muh fun that was? If it hadn't been for the alcohol.... wonder what the rate of alcoholism is?

You are too weak for a place like Whittier.

People who cannot sit alone in a room are very boring to be around. They are so bored with themselves they drink to get away from their thoughts.

You are the type who never played a team sport.

You are the type who would jump overboard to escape a naval warship or submarine.

You are the type who would commit desertion on the battlefield.

Thank God there are indoctrination procedures to weed out people like you.

I rode in my car on the train the ought that tunnel. I swear being in a pitch black tunnel made you feel as though you were going down, down deeper into the earth. I freaked and thought I was on my way to meet my maker! What an interesting community Whittier is!

I didn't even realize Whittier had a school. I always thought what few kids there were went to school in Anchorage or Girdwood. Nice place to visit and keep your boat but wouldn't want to live there.

    That was fantastic!

Those children and that community are lucky as hell to have Ericka.

Shit, I nearly fell in love with her just watching the video.

What a neat gal. Seems like she's perfect for being a teacher in that type of situation and a great asset to their community.

I LOVE this. Interesting to observe how somebody lives in an atypical community. (I've researched doing a kayak trip out of Whittier. Maybe some day.)

I lived in a converted summer cabin in the woods in a one streetlight town in North Jersey for eleven years. We had a post office, a "convenience store" and the closest grocery store was a twenty five mile haul one way. It's not for everyone, but I loved the solitude in winter.
What an interesting idea, a one building town. The only thing that would bother me is the tunnel curfew, what happens if someone needs to go to the hospital after 10:30?
