Plans to shutdown the government in attempt to derail Obamacare were months in the making. Color me unsurprised.

Courtesy of The New York Times:

To many Americans, the shutdown came out of nowhere. But interviews with a wide array of conservatives show that the confrontation that precipitated the crisis was the outgrowth of a long-running effort to undo the law, the Affordable Care Act, since its passage in 2010 — waged by a galaxy of conservative groups with more money, organized tactics and interconnections than is commonly known.

With polls showing Americans deeply divided over the law, conservatives believe that the public is behind them. Although the law’s opponents say that shutting down the government was not their objective, the activists anticipated that a shutdown could occur — and worked with members of the Tea Party caucus in Congress who were excited about drawing a red line against a law they despise.

A defunding “tool kit” created in early September included talking points for the question, “What happens when you shut down the government and you are blamed for it?” The suggested answer was the one House Republicans give today: “We are simply calling to fund the entire government except for the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare.”

The current budget brinkmanship is just the latest development in a well-financed, broad-based assault on the health law, Mr. Obama’s signature legislative initiative. Groups like Tea Party Patriots, Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks are all immersed in the fight, as is Club for Growth, a business-backed nonprofit organization. Some, like Generation Opportunity and Young Americans for Liberty, both aimed at young adults, are upstarts. Heritage Action is new, too, founded in 2010 to advance the policy prescriptions of its sister group, the Heritage Foundation.

The billionaire Koch brothers, Charles and David, have been deeply involved with financing the overall effort. A group linked to the Kochs, Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, disbursed more than $200 million last year to nonprofit organizations involved in the fight. Included was $5 million to Generation Opportunity, which created a buzz last month with an Internet advertisement showing a menacing Uncle Sam figure popping up between a woman’s legs during a gynecological exam.

The groups have also sought to pressure vulnerable Republican members of Congress with scorecards keeping track of their health care votes; have burned faux “Obamacare cards” on college campuses; and have distributed scripts for phone calls to Congressional offices, sample letters to editors and Twitter and Facebook offerings for followers to present as their own.

I don't think this is particularly surprising to any of US who have been paying close attention to the behind the scenes manipulations by Freedomworks and the Koch brothers, or who remember that infamous secret meeting held, on the night of Obama's first inauguration,  by certain Tea Party and GOP types, which laid out their strategy for denying the President ANY POLICY that he wanted to get passed during what they believed would be his first and ONLY term as President.

Hell Freedomworks even advertised online what they would be willing to see done to stop this law from being enacted.

And this is what needs to be brought up EVERY time the media asks who should get the blame for this shutdown, or anybody attempts to suggest that it is the Democrats or President who is being unreasonable for allowing it to continue.

Dislike the Republican klan sitting in Congress. They are horrible and President Obama keeps winning and beating them in spite of their money and actions.

I thought they were suppose to be the Christians, geared toward families and living by religious teachings from the Bible.

They are horses asses in that they are not living the Christian values at all. I thought Christian were on earth to help each other. What about the poor and those not able to obtain health care in the USA? President Obama is providing medical insurance through his LAW called the Affordable Care Act.

Republicans are the worst creatures on this earth! Hell awaits them - especially Boehner, Cantor, McCain, McConnell, Palin, etc.

Vote them out of office every chance you get and I mean ANY Republican on the national, state and local level!

And, thank you President Obama and VP Biden for hanging in there throughout this friggin' mess of obstruction. You are beating them every step of the way!

It amazes me that these people who are destroying America can continue with this defiance and not pay any penalty for it. When do the actions become sedition? Where is the line that separates disagreement from treason? Why can we not get Citizens United overturned and ensure that McConnell is unable to go before the Supreme Court and beg for all laws related to campaign spending be overturned so that unlimited dollars can flow freely? This would destroy our country for sure. I'm tired of paying attention to all the political shenanigans on both sides, but particularly the GOP and their Bircher masters, the Koch Brothers.

It's ridiculous that they are trying to get rid of a law, that was 1. approved by Congress (sorry if their side lost, it happens), 2. approved by the people (Nov 2012), and 3. upheld by the Supreme Court. If they want to change laws, win an election, that's how it's supposed to work. If they are allowed anything but a clean CR and raising the debt ceiling with no strings attached, a very bad precedent will be set, where either party will be able to use this f'd up strategy. If you think DC is a cluster now, god help us if that happens.

And one more thing - the amazement from the Republicans that the President won't give in. Did they realize he's not worried about being elected again? Did they not figure that into their strategy? Inmates running the asylum.

I think it can be classified as treason.
With a large portion of racism thrown in.

We need to change only 20 house seat this year....and keeping watch on the rest. It can be done, with a concerted effort. And everyone trying their best to get the state legislator they want.

"...Partners Chamber of Commerce, disbursed more than $200 million last year..."

    wait, what?

That's one group that spent that much?

If all these groups that "hate Obamacare" would group together, it sounds to me like they could just as well BUY INSURANCE FOR EVERY UNINSURED PERSON for that amount.

i was not surprised by the content of this NYT piece but I was surprised to see it on the front page of the NYT.

I was happy to see it there. But puzzled too. Does the NYT think this is news, that no one knows this? I guess they are right. At least spelling it out is a good thing.

My next thoughts was "Most people are not readers" so this will go nowhere. So glad to see you re-posting this here, Mr. G.

The media really needs to do a better job reporting on this crisis...Boehner DOES have the votes to end this with a clean vote, he does! This is all 100 percent his fault!!!!

ABC's "This Week" had an "Exclusive" with Mr Weepy Orange Man playing the part of "Thug of the House" today. He's been all over FOX news but decides to do a network news show with the same old same old. One of the panelists said the votes are there, all he has to do is floor it, and he's sticking to the talking points.

I think the majority of Americans feel he's on the wrong side with this one, and he knows it. If this goes on much longer, more of the blame will go to the GOP. President Obama let them get away with it before, he better stick to his end of the bargain and not let them touch Obamacare until they pass a clean vote on the floor.

The transcript shows how flawed Weepy Orange man's position is. and who's pulling his strings.

The gall of complaining that they worked all weekend, sitting by the phone waiting for President Obama to call. The balls to say he's giving up his pay while the government is shut down,
"I'm not playing games here" hiccup, burp, pour me another......

What the GOP has been doing is not politics as usual, it is sedition pure and simple.
