Study finds that religious more likely to lie for financial gain. So THAT'S why I'm still poor!

Courtesy of Salon:

In an experiment where lying led directly to financial gain, just over 50 percent of the participants told an untruth. That figure is roughly consistent with previous research.

What’s new in this study by University of Regina economist Jason Childs is its breakdown of the personality traits of the liars. Unlike some previous research, he did not find men are more likely to lie than women.

However, he discovered other factors predicted a greater likelihood of telling an untruth—including the assertion that religion plays an important role in your life.

Somewhere (or not), Christopher Hitchens is chuckling.

Findings of the study were as follows:

Among those more likely to lie for financial gain were:

• Business majors. “It could be that these students are more prone to lying by nature or training,” Childs writes. “It could also be that individuals strongly motivated by financial returns, and therefore more likely to lie for a monetary payoff, are more likely to pursue an education in business.” (Previous research has found higher levels of academic cheating among business majors.)

• Students whose parents were divorced. This is in line with expectations, in thatpast research has found children of divorce are more likely to engage in anti-social behavior. Perhaps the belief they’ve been cheated out of a happy childhood may lead them to feel cheating is OK.

• Those for whom religion was more important to their lives. “This is surprising,” Childs writes, as most religions “promote honesty as a virtue. It may be that students for whom religion was important feel separate from other students at this largely secular university,” and thus feel less compelled to be honest with them.

You know part of me kind of wants to challenge these findings since I have never found that being religious or not, had any direct impact on a person's honesty.  However I also have to admit that with the preponderance of churches now preaching prosperity theology it might very well have conditioned many religious folks to focus on the acquisition of money above all else.

Personally as an Atheist I don't need to feel more moral or honest than my religious counterparts, I just don't want to be considered less moral or honest simply due to my lack of belief.

  2. I don’t know if I put too much weight in any of this. Kids will lie to get themselves out of a tough spot, and people will lie about sex for the same reason. But once the adult personality is set, some folks will lie easily, some will lie under duress, and some won’t lie at all, even in a bad situation. I think self-esteem is the key rather than religion. “My word is my bond.”

God talks to several people at 7th and Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles, CA. They Preach about their conversations all day every day. Sarah Palin likes Hollywood, so 7th and Broadway is a good start for the Batshit Crazy Tundra Turd to speak in 'Tongues'.

Sarah's word salad should qualify as "speaking in tongues"!

I would bet that if the study had another person, a fellow believer, with the religious person it would have shown them to be more honest. Nothing like a witness to make sure you do the right thing.

I'm unsure about establishing any general rules of thumb for the honesty of folks across the religious spectrum.

But on the other hand, it is well known in the South that if you are going to have a fishing buddy who is a Baptist, always have him invite someone from his church to go along. If he brings another Baptist, neither of them will drink at all. But if only one of them comes, he will drink all of your beer in the ice chest.

It's not really an honesty test, per se, since he's not exactly stealing them, but an interesting phenomena that their activity is only "sin" or shameful if witnessed by one of their congregation.

"Look, I’ll keep this brief because I want to spend quality time getting kids to bed tonight. Doubt I’ll get much sleep though because the recent proof of government corruption makes me nauseated. If it doesn’t you, and you can blindly ignore the status quo embraced by our politicians and low information voters, then I unapologetically call out your disloyalty to the ethical foundation of the greatest nation on earth.

When you have a moment, please read my review of a jaw dropping, searing new book that provides the proof that Washington, D.C. has strayed so far from the planks in both major political parties' platforms that we are fools for trusting any who have refused to fight against cronyism and extortion. This is the stuff Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin and a few others have railed against so boldly. It's the stuff “tea party” patriots of all stripes rallied against to grow the grassroots movement that is the only political solution to defend our republic! “60 Minutes” covered some of this on Sunday, Sean Hannity had an outstanding interview with the book’s author tonight, and other mediums are doing right by not ignoring these revelations.

Here’s the deal: all politics is local. And personal. Let me personalize this. It is UNBELIEVABLE that the press would investigate every nook and cranny of my life; send gullible reporters to my little town to kick over every rock any family member ever tread underfoot; scour every email I’ve written; research every Palin campaign disclosure like junkyard dogs; sic 12 AP reporters to fact check my book; breathlessly report about my wardrobe and an old used tanning bed I bought to get some sun during Alaskan winters as if these were vital national news stories; hound friends, personal doctors, strangers, and just downright strange people, etc., etc., etc., to know everything we do (and they still get the story wrong!). They blew and still blow all those resources “investigating” the irrelevant hockey mom from Wasilla. Meanwhile our government goes to hell in a hand basket right before the “elite media’s” closed eyes, and it took my friend Peter Schweizer to slap you upside the head to see any of this corruption? Good God. Be ashamed, media, be very ashamed.

Now, I think I’ll go read “Green Eggs and Ham” to my little boy, then we’ll all say a prayer for our country as I join you in readying for tomorrow’s battle for America.

Here’s my review of Peter Schweizer’s new book “Extortion: How Politicians Extract Your Money, Buy Votes, and Line Their Own Pockets”:

She could've had that kid in bed two hours earlier had she been *brief* like she promised. Someone has her rattled. Nicely done, G-man & fellow IMers. Nicely done.

Please proceed. You know, "personal doctors" and whatnot.

"(and they still get the story wrong!)" So she's admitted it's all just a story she's made up? And she acts like she doesn't love all the attention she gets-- which, were she an actual viable candidate she would not have gotten nearly as burnt by the magnifying glass. She got looked at so closely not because people were necessarily trying to find dirt on her, but because she was a fucking side show attraction and people need a good laugh. All the actual dirt they found was a bonus, sweetheart. You started out as a vapid pretty face. Now you're a coked-up joke begging for scraps from FoxNews and even they keep kicking your dog face from under the table.

She just can't help lying all the time. It has to be a mental issue. An OLD tanning bed? and those weren't any old e-mails, they were official government e-mails.

Her only good wardrobe was paid for by taxpayers. So yes, they had questions re: justification for the expense of hundreds of thousands of dollars dressing her and her family and her daughter's boyfriend.

If she wasn't cheating on her taxes, and reported her income as required, there would not a great uproar over her postage expenses.

She has a lot of baggage with her pimp husband, the prostitution business, the gambling, the drugs, the vandalism, her faked pregnancy and her litters of grandkids.

Damn, guess government is a racket and out of control spending only a problem when Sarah is not the recipient of the money, gift, etc. For example: consider the cost of wiring the governor’s mansion for the tanning bed! And who paid for that? Taxpayers!!! And, she admonished her lackeys to make sure it did not become general knowledge. Yes, Sarah, we all need tanning beds! You are a vain and foolish woman.

"It may be that students for whom religion was important feel separate from other students at this largely secular university,”

I totally disagree with this statement.. I think the real reason is that they have been raised to believe that they are morally superior and entitled to have the upper hand in their dealings with others.
My current job includes transporting the disabled to church services. Last week I was waiting outside the church for my client when I heard the sermon over a loud speaker. The preacher was talking about sending people to another country where it is illegal to proselytize.
His solution, lie and tell the other nation that the church was setting up a non-profit business that had nothing to do with religion.... that's right LIE and BREAK THE LAW.

How honest is that? So it is ok to lie and cheat as long as you get what you want, that was the message that a preacher had just told his congregation and they ate it up.....
