Costco labels Bible as fiction. Cue the Christian outrage!

Courtesy of Fox News:

What do the Bible, "The Hunger Games" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" have in common? All three are works of fiction, according to the booksellers at Costco.

Pastor Caleb Kaltenbach made that shocking discovery last Friday as he was shopping for a present for his wife at a Costco in Simi Valley, Calif.

“All the Bibles were labeled as fiction,” the pastor told me. “It seemed bizarre to me.”

Kaltenbach is the lead pastor at Discovery Church, a non-denominational Christian congregation in southern California.

He thought there must be some sort of mistake so he scoured the shelf for other Bibles. Every copy was plastered with a sticker that read, “$14.99 Fiction.”

Uh oh somebody needs to tell Sarah Palin about this. If she can get out a ghostwritten Facebook post on this in a hurry, she might be able to knock her book perhaps ten more slots down in the Amazon rating system before the end of the day.

Personally I have to really question the intelligence of anybody who reads the Bible and believes that it is literally a factual account of events that took place in the past.

Of course it's fiction, the only question remaining should be is is good fiction or bad?

I vote for the latter.

Maybe for someone who is a liar and that your blog is bs because you play people for fools about the character known as Sarah Palin (Fake) Levi (VERY fake character) and you play along with it being part of the group

But when you are an atheist with no morals you are a big liar and phony yourself

The bible is a book of "Fairy Tales" Just like other Fairy tales.
Books had to be handmade written out laboriously so many things had been handed down by the spoken word.
      There were no electronic devices.
Scribes wrote down what they "thought" sages said, thereby creating "Fables" with some truth in there but largely the creation of whomever wrote it...ya know sort of like Sarah's books.
I agree! Should be in the fiction section along with sarah's dumbassed books.

Depends on what categories COSTCO has. If the only choices are fiction/non-fiction, then it goes under fiction. "Regular" bookstores have mythology/religion sections - so it goes there.

    Question, Gryphen:

Is the yellow label the actual one on the book or is it your addition? Or someone else's? (Not that it isn't true, but I'm wondering.)

Just curious, because that would REALLY piss off a lot of people!

7:01 - Al Gore was mentioned in the little-known lost book of the bible called 'The Ecologicans'.

It never got printed with the rest of the bible because then the internet happened.

more likely, it got dropped from the Bibble like 2/3's of the original book.

Parts that were left out included paying dues for the sins of the dead, sins don't count if the donation is big enough, and the recipe for magic.

The council of Nicea left out anything that pertained to women. They also mistranslated portions of the writings according to their prejudice.

Later, King James removed even more portions that he didn't like.

Every little bit has been written, re-written and changed from the original.

You will never convince the believers. Heck, even the Mormons think their book was written by God. It was actually written by a man convicted of scamming the people.

Good for Costco. I'll have to shop there more often.

I know that Costco is led by a progressive guy but was this a wise thing to do? I am agnostic but I do feel that the Bible is not a work of fiction to millions and somehow I feel offended for them. Deep down, I think this was an error on someone's part. However, Sarah will surely have her juices flowing by mid morning.

Why would YOU feel "Offended" for them?
      If you are truly "agnostic"?

These people need to learn how to "Dil".
What about Muslims, people burning their book? Witches and Pagans persecuted for their faith? Native Americans robbed of their faith and FORCED into Christianity?
People call witchcraft books all kings of things including "magical thinking"? If your going to be offended be "Offended" by all of it...or else you just blowing smoke.

Costco doesn't have a fiction section...or a non-fiction section. It has a table where all the books are jumbled together--the cooking books, the kids' books, the best sellers, and whatever else they have at the moment. I've been a Costco member for more than a decade and I've never seen them sell the bible.

It's more offensive to put it under nonfiction. How many people (even religious ones) REALLY believe the stories really happened?

  6. It has historical value, and some of it is interesting, even profound, but there were many authors all cobbled together, and much was left out.

I anticipate a backlash, and I hope Costco stands their ground. I expect many Christians to buy another Bible in solidarity, leaving less for poor Sarah. It’s a much bigger book, after all.

      "It has historical value...."

Make that SOME historical value - and very little at that. Unfortunately, BECAUSE some of it has physical accuracy, too many people accept far too much of it as accurate!

Like the land "given the israeli people" is theirs in perpetuity! An absolutely THOROUGHLY RIDICULOUS claim.

If any nation recognizes that to be true, I'll start pushing for the total return of the US lower 48 back to the American Indian!

If you go over to the Fox News story and read the comments, you'll see that even there, the opinions are trending towards the "buybull" being fiction. Even there, they can't hold up the argument about the TRUTH of the bible, or it being non-fiction. Clearly, the Fauxfolk can't gin up a controversy on this.
So.....watch for Sarah to chime in in about a week or two.

Not only is the bible pretty much completely a work of fiction, but is also a very badly written Gothic horror tale. I started to read the bible at about 10 years old at the urging of very religious friends of my parents. The old testament in particular gave me nightmares, and confused me thoroughly with the so called logic that is used by many of the "characters" in that book.

I LOVE Costco. They are a socially conscious company that treats its employees well, makes a huge effort to have organic, sustainable products, and has a great management plan. Things like this just make me all the more a dedicated customer ( but i still didn't like the bed I bought there.)

I would love to get some of those stickers. At present, when I stay in motels I write "This book is fiction!" On the bibles. This sicker would be better.

Three years ago I stayed in a motel in Madison, GA. I got in late, so put the "do not disturb" hang tag out. When someone knocked loudly at the door, I ignored it. Then the door opened...only as far as the safey latch, thank goodness. I called the front desk to report it, and he told me it was only the Gideons coming around to check the bibles. I asked how they had a key and he said they had a copy of the master key. I told him that sounded illegal and he assured me that they were all "good christian men" i told him that I have a gun and I would shoot christians entering my room without my permission too . (Okay...that was a lie) He repeated again that they were good men who were only doing god's will. I think you can imagine the things I wrote on that bible for them to find. When I came back later in the day, that bible was gone and a shiny new one was in the drawer, which meant they had been in my room. Freaks! Just gave me another chance to let them know what I think of them and their stupid book.

My son & a friend got kicked out of a Borders bookstore a few years ago for putting the Bible into the "mythology" section (they were taking Facebook photos). People who are outraged by this need to get a life. I always suspect that their faith is not nearly as strong as they want everyone to believe, otherwise they wouldn't be so threatened by EVERYTHING.

  18. It is non-fiction and is in the 200s; religion and philosophy. You'll also find Greek myths there because at one point that was someone's religion.

Just because it's in non-fiction doesn't mean it's true. All of the fairy tales are in 398.2 and no one is suggesting Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty are true. Likewise, the 800s have humor, poetry and plays. Also not "true".

  20. The Bible is a collection of allegories and parables (with some elements loosely based on actual historical events) designed, in part, to provide answers for people who asked questions about matters which they could not yet comprehend and to provide guidelines for expected moral behavior as determined by the religious order of the time … 100% from the minds and hands of a series of mere mortals, not God.

Anyone who claims that the Bible is a literal account of actual historical events, or that it was written by the Almighty Himself, is living in a state of denial.
