Five great men, and one buffoon, all agree that Secular Education must be protected.

I have a very hard time understanding why ALL Americans, whether religious or non, cannot recognize why this is important.

Well, I think they want a controlled population. Kids coming out of religious schools are dumber. They are more easily manipulated. They do not have critical thinking skills. I've had a number of mormon kids in my studio, and they meet every ornign at 6AM for 'prayer studies,' then go to public schools. After school, they have scouts and music lessons and church. They keep them so busy they have no time to explore anything on their own. It amazes me that they send them off for two years to a foreign country for a 'mission.' Anyone ever tracked what happens when you send off 20 year olds in these situations? Is it like the Amish rumprisch? Do they go crazy? We see the results of this with the Romney robots, and we see the results of 'home schooling' and no schooling with the Palin brood, but overall, I believe public school kids are better able to face the world and work. My kdis and their friends are all employed, married, and great people. Sure, we lost a couple to drugs, but overall, I am pleased with the education they got. One of them went to a public university, and one private (she had the grades and was a National Merit Scholar like Chelsea Clinton, and got full tuition at her school (and law school) of choice, so who were we to tell her where to go?) I think that graohic above should be posted in every school in America, and I think 'under God' needs to come out of the now-required Pledge of Allegiance.

The US Supreme Court has already ruled that a student cannot be forced to recite the pledge, nor punished for not reciting it. Quite a while ago, actually.

Really? Because Palin, like a four month old infant, can't even recognize her hands in front of her face as being hers. Recognizing principles would be magnitudes of ability beyond her (and so many others like her).

Some people are threatened by people who don't believe what they believe; they think the existence of another's belief somehow diminishes theirs.

I noticed my favorite president--T.R.-- is there. I'm listening to The Bully Pulpit right now. It's astonishing how men respected men respected knowledge and learning back then, only to see how people worship ignorance today.

I just wonder are charter schools violating this principal? My state has voted them in and I suspect that most have a religious undertone.... anyone know?

  5. I'm sorry to be the devil's advocate, but regarding Edison, he was quite an a**hole, mostly preying on others' inventions and claiming them for himself.

These examples cover quite a span in history, and I have to agree. I was the product of a "parochial school" system in the RCC and I got a good education despite the "Discipline", corporeal punishment and emotional abuse etc.
I sent my kids to public schools and was active in the school community and saw first hand the excellent work they do. My kids learned to embrace their curiosity and explore the limits of their world and their minds. They learned the world is made up of people who look different than they do and they learned much about the rich and diverse cultures of other people's Religions, ancestry and customs.
    No regrets at all.
