Rachel Maddow debunks the newest Right Wing outrage over the "fact" that President Obama omitted God from the Gettysburg Address. He didn't.

This courtesy of Raw Story:

According to Media Matters, Burns specifically asked the president to read from the “Nicolay Version,” which was written before the phrase “under God” was added:

“It is rather for us, the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

The phrase, however, was changed slightly by the time the speech was delivered by Lincoln: “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.”

By Tuesday morning, the news had become one of the top stories on conservative websites like the Drudge Report, The Daily Caller, the National Review Online and WMAL. The Daily Caller did eventually correct their report to note that Burns had requested the “Nicolay Version” of the speech.

This story was ALL OVER the Right Wing blogosphere yesterday. I knew when I first heard it that it was nothing.

I swear that these idiots spend all day, every day simply waiting for something that they can feel outraged over.

Can't wait for Sarah Palin's dog whistle response to this, after all, isn't she the one to compare herself to a pit bull bitch?

This is so true. They are always wanting to be outraged or afraid. Imagine living your life so yoked to crap other people are doing, never thinking for yourself, always in pants-wetting terror of . . . . something. Kind of pathetic.

  6. Yep, outrage. Instant crisis mode. They thrive on it. Our world is ending! We must act now or perish! It's exhausting just listening to them.

Jeez, Gryphen, lighten up already, will ya!!

You've got some kind of bizarre obsession with "The Truth"! What's up with that?? If you pound your fists every time the baggers tell a lie, you're gonna have clumps of hamburger hanging off your wrists where your hands oughta be!. Just cut it out! Stop trying to force our alternate-universe-loving uber-conservative douchebag neighbors into conforming to your antiquated notions of reality.

C'mon, Dude, without their bizarro-world belief system, the tea baggin' patriots would simply be a merry band of lunatics who need to be institutionalized, ideally, but heavily medicated, at the very least!

    Oh.

I think I get your point of view now.

    Nevermind.

    O/T
Sarah Palin's political action committee has asked NBC News whether commentator Martin Bashir will be disciplined for comments about the former Alaska governor that the PAC called appalling.

It is all so goofy. Did NBC News even see the letter or is it just a propaganda ploy? If NBC did get that letter from SarahPAC I would like to know their answer.

Is NBC News going to go silent?

      Why?

It was an unsparing scatological commentary yet Bashir did not do as the fake letter claimed. They wrote that Bashir stated that someone should defecate and urinate in Sarah Palin's mouth.
THAT IS NOT WHAT HE STATED.

@ 12:05: Cher's tweet reminds me of an occurrence that happened many years ago while I was working production for GM. I was on a two man job... one of the women in our crew called me and my partner assholes. Long story short we called the Union to address the problem. When the committee man showed up we acted real hurt and explained, "We're not assholes, everybody knows we're peckerheads!!!"

Here's the real problem though: Why did Obama walk right into that one? Surely he knew the obvious flack he'd get for the "godless Gettysburg".

The guy seems seriously naive. First he believed the Republicans would be reasonable and honorable, then he believed the insurance industry would play fair and not try to stab him in the back. What's up with that? Is no one watching his back?

I'm with you on this Boscoe. PO didn't need yet more controversy, and could have avoided this one. The optics would have been better had PO told Ken Burns, "no thanks, I'd rather read the version that says 'under God'". That's the one on the wall of the Lincoln Memorial, the one everyone knows.

President Obama read the second draft as requested to by the film's director, Ken Burns. President Obama is not "seriously naive." Mouthy people on the far right are "seriously" hypocritical. How often do you think that Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly enter churches to attend services? How often do any of them think of praying when it will not put dollars in their pockets? And with regard to the ACA, it's the GOP that has done its best to create roadblocks. Smart insurance companies are cooperating with the law. But we do not hear about them.

I wrote this in response to Boscoe at 12:36 pm and somehow I didn't get it where I wanted it. Gee, life is like that sometimes. I'm frankly sick and tired of the right wing loudmouths in this country who keep trying to shove their brand of religiosity down everyone's throats. President Obama and his family and Vice President Biden and his family are churchgoers; can anyone say the same for Sarah Palin, her family, her FOX cohorts or the GOP members of Congress (and their crazy parents) who are loudest in their protestations about their vision of God in our political life?

POTUS Goes There: Obama Shreds Republicans For Calling Him a Socialist

...President Obama broke it down, and explained to Republicans why their howls of socialism are laughable. This president is a centrist, not a socialist. It was refreshing to hear him summarize his own views and record. There is not a single policy that this president has advocated for that could be described as socialistic.

Obama is the opposite of a socialist. The only socialism that Republicans are able to attach to the president is what they dream up. President Obama did not nationalize or takeover the auto industry. He didn’t nationalize and stage a government takeover of healthcare, and raising taxes on the wealthy because they are paying less than their fair share is not socialism.

The ignorant people who call President Obama a socialist do not know what a socialist is. They are so extreme that they describe center left policies as socialism. It was nice to hear the president bluntly lay it out, and confront the ridiculous Republican delusion that he is a socialist.

The know nothings who do nothing in the Republican Party have been making this bogus claim for too long. Barack Obama is not a socialist, and it was to see him treat the Republican allegations with the ridicule that they so richly deserve,

They lost me when they started bitching about moving "In God We Trust" waaaaaaay to the right of where it used to be on old bills. And now this.
Burns specifically asked for this version, and President Obama obliged him. Neither version is offensive in any way, unless, you know, President Obama reads/says it.

I wonder how they'd react of President Obama said something to the effect "Paul Revere was a true patriot, he went riding on his horse, firing his gun and ringing his bells to warn the British....."
