The treasonous actions of the Right Wing's hero Ronald Reagan, and how it made Iran the "dangerous threat" the Republicans still use to frighten Americans today.

Courtesy of TruthoutIn 1980 Carter thought he had reached a deal with newly-elected Iranian President Abdolhassan Bani-Sadr over the release of the fifty-two hostages held by radical students at the American Embassy in Tehran.

Bani-Sadr was a moderate and, as he explained in an editorial for The Christian Science Monitor earlier this year, had successfully run for President on the popular position of releasing the hostages:

"I openly opposed the hostage-taking throughout the election campaign.... I won the election with over 76 percent of the vote.... Other candidates also were openly against hostage-taking, and overall, 96 percent of votes in that election were given to candidates who were against it [hostage-taking]."

Carter was confident that with Bani-Sadr's help, he could end the embarrassing hostage crisis that had been a thorn in his political side ever since it began in November of 1979.

But Carter underestimated the lengths his opponent in the 1980 Presidential election, California Governor Ronald Reagan, would go to screw him over.

Behind Carter's back, the Reagan campaign worked out a deal with the leader of Iran's radical faction - Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini - to keep the hostages in captivity until after the 1980 Presidential election.

This was nothing short of treason. The Reagan campaign's secret negotiations with Khomeini - the so-called "October Surprise" - sabotaged Carter and Bani-Sadr's attempts to free the hostages. And as Bani-Sadr told The Christian Science Monitor in March of this year, they most certainly "tipped the results of the [1980] election in Reagan's favor."

Not surprisingly, Iran released the hostages on January 20, 1981, at the exact moment Ronald Reagan was sworn into office.

The "October Surprise" emboldened the radical forces inside Iran. A politically weakened Bani-Sadr was overthrown in June of 1981 and replaced with Mohammed Ali Rajai - a favorite of Khomeini's. These radical forces today are represented by people like former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, hard-liners who oppose any deal with the United States and, like Khomeini in the 1980s, will jump at any chance to discredit the current moderate presidency of Hassan Rouhani.

The October Surprise also led to the deaths of thousands of innocent people around the world, and in Central America in particular. Reagan took money from the Iranians and used that money to kill nuns in Nicaragua.

But those are just the most obvious results of the October Surprise. Again, if Carter were able to free the hostages like he and Bani-Sadr had planned, Carter would have won re-election. After all, he was leading in most polls in the months leading up to the election. And if Reagan were never elected, America would be a much more progressive nation.

I am sure that many of you are old enough to remember when all of this went down, however with the President's new deal with Iran on their nuclear program taking such heat from the Right Wing it is important to remember that they have a history of sabotaging deals with Iran, and that we should keep a wary on them at all times.

Could you just imagine how different the world would have been if Carter's deal had been implemented? How much better our relationship would have been with Iran, as well as Iraq and Pakistan?

How many American lives could have been saved if Iran had not been manipulated by the Republicans into becoming the bogeyman to replace the newly democratized Russia?

And while we are on the topic it should be remembered that not only were the Republicans instrumental in getting the Shah of Iran into power in the first place, their were also instrumental in laying the groundwork for his overthrow and the eventual fundamentalist Islamic uprising that saw those American hostages taken in 1979.

Remember "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." We are close to creating a new deal with Iran which might go a long way toward quelling violence in the Middle East, and laying the groundwork for a future where terrorism is a thing of the past, and none of that works in the Republican's favor.

In 1980 I was a freshman in HS and I honestly can't say at that age I paid a whole lot of attention to politics. I do remember my Dad telling me to pay attention as Nixon resigned because history was being made. And as a fifth grader rooting for Jimmy Carter.
I can't pinpoint where or when my liberalism was born. I've always felt this way. My Dad was a staunch Republican and my Mom never talked about politics although I would consider her pretty liberal despite her Catholicism.
It just makes me sick to my stomach that the very party that tries to shame liberals and progressives for not being "patriotic" are behind these type of machinations!!

It's time the liberals drive the narrative. We have to stop being naive and give the other side the benefit of the doubt because we can't imagine being so underhanded ourselves. We need to elect more people who are outspoken about our ideologies!

I was 14 when tricky dick resigned. I remember my liberal parents rejoicing that it would be a very long time before Americans would elect another Republican. I'm very sorry they were so wrong. I rue the day Ronnie rayguns was elected (both times) and I'm absolutely outraged that the elections were handed to GWB. I will never trust a Republican until I draw my last breath. They are the reason we can't have nice things.

So true about the Shah too. I remember his reign of terror. And, I remember Iranian exchange students in San Francisco so afraid to speak out against him they wore paper bags over their heads at rallies to oust him.

I remember all of that history, IM. We now have the right POTUS in place to handle things 'peacefully'. More Americans need to stand up and publically support him - after all, he was elected 'twice' by us!!!

And, I suggest that Republicans be voted out of office across the nation. They are nothing more than liars, frauds, obstructionists, war mongers, racists and assuredly not the Christians they profess themselves to be!

As some one who was related to a person high in the GOP back then (deceased), I was warned not to get to into alternative energy as a major. Like an idiot I did not listen. As soon as Carter lost, all green energy research came to s screeching halt and all the money went to oil and gas exploration and exploitation.
The solar panels came off the White House and the oil and gas people went nuts. Just imagine if Carter had won, how far along would be already be to severely reduced green house gasses, energy independence (from ALL oil and gas) and how much cleaner our air and water would be let alone how much healthier our planet would be?
All of what is happening now is a result of that treason.

I appreciate you - but on this one you are full of shit-

Carter fucked us- Reagon cleaned up a huge mess.

I wore a shirt that said "fuck Iran" - and there was a good reason to wear it.

Your boss, during that time, knew his involvement was going to be seen as a compromise on his political platform. I, too, remember the military rhetoric, but how much of it was the commercialism speaking for weapon manufacturers? Remember the media exploding with how the gov was using Psyop's and those who were returning post-war were not being enable to reintegrate with the populace?

This story is TRUE. The ONLY way republicans get into the WH is by dirty tricks, underhanded actions. GHW Bush was part of this, too. Jimmy Varter is a true gentleman, too decent for politics. Look at how respected he is worldwode, and the good thngs he and his wife still do to help people. No repub. former president has done much of anything for others. Reagan was just as phony as both Bushes.

Sir you may be a vet but you support someone who was a traitor to the flag and country you claim to support. You need to open your eyes and read more. I KNOW what happened back then as I was told what was going to happen before it did. Amazing what you can get an older relative to spew if you get them drunk enough and they are ashamed enough to tell you.
The facts haunted my relative to an early grave.

This is a story told by Ronald Reagan’s daughter in the book she wrote about her life. Jimmy Carter was had by a very sick group of people who were willing to cause mayhem to advance their agenda. There were no immediate consequences for Reagan and we as a country have had to live with this since. Thank you so much for posting this.

  7. I remember these things as well. That was vicious, blatant treachery from the Reagan camp...52 minutes indeed. It was obvious bullshit. It made me sick.

I was also in Nicaragua up near the Honduran border during the CIA fueled contra war. It was sickening to hear from local campesinos the atrocities that were inflicted on them...deaths of young local farmers, kidnappings and forced killings so the boys kidnapped couldn't go home again to face retribution; innocent families deprived of sons, husbands, fathers, homes and even livestock through a systematic program of terrorism, theft of family possessions by contras, We were in active zones and, believe me, pretty scared ourselves, but the local people were very grateful we were there because the contras (hopped up on CIA provided pills), didn't want the true stories leaking back to the U.S. and would leave them alone as long as we were around. Our companions begged us not to leave.

Many thanks for including the Oct. 2008 LATimes article. Geez! Surely this was worthy of considerable attention during the presidential campaign. How did I miss it?

In another 30-50 years, people will be reading how the Romney campaign conspired with the creators of the anti-Mohammed film to cause violence in the Middle East and undermine confidence in Pres. Obama's anti-terrorist policies. Benghazi!!! And what was Tagg doing in Russia?

I was young then, (and couldn't really give a shit) but even so, I smelled a giant rat, over the release of the hostages...as if the Iranians were so scared of Reagan, that they'd cave just because he was elected.

Just reeked of bullshit...and right around that time, was when the craft of investigative journalism died out.

And not all of us veterans are blinded to the truth of Reagan's treasonous actions. The US, and I daresay, the world would have been much better off if Carter had won. Given the outcome, the least we can do is make sure the truth is known. Thanks Gryphen for posting this.

Didn't good old Ollie North have a secret mission to Iran with a bible and birthday cake around the same time?

We all knew at the time St Ronnie "did something to win" the election especially when the hostages were liberated right after the election-Republicans can't win with fair elections so they cheat. You can't tell me St. Ronnie didn't have Alzheimer's when he was in office. Half the time when referring to his so called military service it turned out to be some movie he was in.
Every time I think the republicans have lowered the bar, they manage to lower even further.

Gryph, Dec. 2nd is the 33rd anniversary of the horrendous murders of four American nuns in El Salvador. It's directly connect with the situation in Iran, and timely today in light of Pope Francis' recent message.

Thanks for both articles. Jimmy Carter got shafted because of the Right Wing's underhanded tricks. Funny, how, after the Eight Year Bush Regime, the GOP has to go waaaaaay back to Saint Ronnie "Iran Contra" Reagan for their "Hero".
I'm so glad we now have a Democratic President who's wise enough to understand the nuances of the arc of history and knows the value of Diplomacy in leading our country.

So St. Ronnie Raygun palled around with Islamic terrorists and rigged a US election with them to do so.

    Roast, Ronnie, roast.
