According to a British Medical Journal study virgin births happen all of the time. So much for being special Jesus!

"Just admit it mom, you were a slut."

Roughly 1 percent of moms may be virgins -- or so they claim in a new survey.

Virgin birth, or parthenogenesis, typically occurs in non-humans that reproduce asexually, including sharks, Komodo dragons, pit vipers and boa constrictors. The British Medical Journal, which published the study in its latest Christmas issue, points out many retell the birth of Jesus to the Virgin Mary this time of year.

A team of American researchers wanted to find out the frequency this occurred in humans.

“We examined the incidence of virgin pregnancy and birth based on self report of pregnancy and sexual debut, hypothesizing that individual and contextual factors may influence reporting,” wrote the researchers, led by Amy H. Herring, a biostatiscian at UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Indeed, that appeared to be the case for some women. The researchers found 0.8 percent of responders gave birth despite being virgins, without the use of any assisted reproductive technology like IVF.

These women were more likely to have signed chastity pledges (31 percent of them) than the non-virgins who reported pregnancies (15 percent).

For the study, researchers surveyed data on almost 7,900 women multiple times over a 14-year period between their adolescent and adult years, each time asking about their sexual and pregnancy histories. They were also asked about their age, religion and knowledge of different birth control methods.

In total, 45 women gave birth while consistently claiming they were virgins.

Wow, so many virgin births. Just imagine if each one wanted to start their own religion.

The majority of Biblical scholars agree that the immaculate conception part of the Jesus story was added much later, however it is still such an important part of the mythology that Christians are willing to go to war with the non-religious over it every holiday season.

However as this study demonstrates virgin births are a dime a dozen these days.

Unless of course the Christians think that a young woman claiming to be carrying a child without ever having KNOWN a man would be lying about that?

Surely they don't think that, do they?

    WRONGO!!!!
Gryphen - the Immaculate Conception is NOT the Virgin birth.
The Immaculate Conception means that Mary was supposedly born without original sin like the rest of us humans.

Trust me on this. 12 years of Catholic School.
This is without a doubt the biggest mistake people make . It is logical to think Immaculate Conception means Virgin pregnancy - but IT DOESN'T. It means Mary was free of original sin.

"Immaculate Conception" is not synonymous with "virgin birth," they're two completely different things. In the Catholic Church, which invented the concept of the former, the immaculate conception refers to the belief that Mary was conceived (unlike everyone else) without the stain of original sin on her soul. "Immaculate" therefore refers to her sinless soul, not her sexless conception of Jesus. I think it's all a bunch of hooey now, but that's what I was taught during my Catholic school days.

    1. To honest I did not actually know that there was a difference.

But now that I do I find that attempt to cleanup Mary's virtue, and set her above all other woman, incredibly misogynist and ugly.

The idea of original sin is, I believe, one of the most destructive hoaxes every perpetrated in the name of religion. And one that NO rational human being should ever allow themselves to accept as fact.

You are born perfect and there should be no burden placed upon you that you do not earn through your actions as you live your life. To suggest otherwise is to embrace self loathing and subjugation to an idea that was dreamed up by those who want to manipulate you.

Didn't Jesus have older brothers? How could Mary then have been a virgin???

With 12 years of Catholic School behind me, just an FYI - actually, the Immaculate Conception (December 8th) is the doctrine that Jesus' mother Mary was conceived without Original Sin. The immaculate conception is not Jesus' "virgin birth".

Oww, my head hurts remembering all that stuff...

    Happy holidays!

Thank you anony 3:42. I was just about to post the same thing. So many misinformed people think it refers to Jesus when the Immaculate (Clean, White) Conception refers to his mother. Can't have Jesus being born to just anyone. Mary was conceived without sin.
You can imagine my dismay when some younger people, not Catholic, told me that Jesus had brothers and sisters! They said it was in the Bible. What? I thought Jesus was an only child and Joseph and Mary never hooked up, ever.

Sorry for my redundant response. I was reading from the bottom up so I didn't know so many others beat me to the explanation. I too had 12 years of Catholic indoctrination. That's why I love Gryphen's refreshing posts on so many other interesting topics that I never was informed of before. I learn things when I come here!

In addition to not understanding the difference between "virgin birth" and "immaculate conception," it's pushing things a little at this time of year. There may be those who are reluctant to believe it, but there are genuine Christians who are not mean, cruel, intolerant or unkind to everyone else. Let's just enjoy Christmas - whether secularly or religiously or in combination. It's too important a moment in our year for meanness - by anyone.

Just think of it as the adult version of finding out there's no Santa. Truth may be painful, but it's necessary.

    This is a shameful post.

How can you question what is in these women's hearts? What a self righteous thing to post!

I bet the NEXT thing on your list is to slander storks!

Maybe just once you could libel liberals!

Facts are facts and can be neither shameful nor insulting. Only what is DONE with those facts can be shameful or positve.

And calling a posting of information "shameful" is just plain stupid. As with facts, there is nothing shameful about providing information.

From what I understand about the movement of sperm, it is actually possible that some women might be virgins when they become pregnant... They were 'necking', or 'petting' or whatever you call the prick-teasing where the guy can go outside her vagina but not penetrate her. If he 'comes', and right outside her vagina, some of those sperms can travel 'up there' and fertilize an egg.
So, *technically* she is a virgin... (Also, too, there are hymens that are quite stretchable, so they don't tear at first penetration, which also would make them *technical* virgins, I guess...)

  11. maybe they're just misunderstanding the thick British accent and the women are actually saying "ejaculate conception"?

I;m sure, if the study were done in America, the percent would be way above one percent. There's a whole line of thinking that, after having had sex and a child, one can simply call oneself a "born again Virgin". And what, exactly, is the "proof" of "virginity"? One may lose one's hymen's integrity with the use of tampons, sports, etc.
I remember looking through wedding photos in my mom's era in Eastern Europe for inspiration for my own. One of the common borrowed"Accessories" was an ornate, usually pearl encrusted hat pin, and no one was wearing hats but the men.
She explained that in those days, the night of the honeymoon, men from the village would serenade the couple, and traditionally the dirty, blood stained sheets were displayed on the balcony as "proof" the bride was a virgin, when one of them pricked their finger and drew blood as "evidence". Kind of ramped up the "eww" factor for me.
