Final image (gif) of the day.

For those who are not aware, this is the man that stood up during the Mandela Memorial the other day, that was attended by dignitaries from around the world, including our current and two former Presidents, and provided sign language interpretation.

Except that he was apparently NOT a sign language interpreter, and clearly did NOT know sign language.

This from CNN:

To those outside the deaf community, the sign language interpreter for Nelson Mandela's memorial may have looked like he was working hard, translating the spoken words into gestures for four hours.

But he has been dubbed "a fake," and his actions outraged deaf people, according to an association for the deaf community in South Africa.

The service to commemorate the revered statesman, who died last week at the age of 95, was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world.

While dignitaries addressed the crowd Tuesday at Johannesburg's FNB stadium, the unidentified suited man with a security pass produced a series of hand signals that experts say meant nothing.

The Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA) said the "interpreter" was not a recognized professional, nor was he known by the deaf community in the country.

"The so-called 'interpreter' who interpreted at the official memorial service for late former president Nelson Mandela at FNB stadium has been dubbed the 'fake interpreter' and the deaf community is in outrage," Bruno Druchen, national director of DeafSA, said in a statement.

"He is not known by the Deaf Community in South Africa nor by the South African Sign Language interpreters working in the field."

The man did not use facial expressions, which in South African sign language are an important part of communication, and the hand signals he used were meaningless, Druchen said.

"The signs (self-invented signs) the interpreter used are not used in South African Sign Language and it is a total mockery of the language," he said.

Okay at this point I am torn between very impressed that anybody had the balls to pull off such a daring prank, at such a  highly publicized event, and horrified that anybody could get that close to dignitaries without a background check and screening.

If this guy had been a terrorist this could have been a very bad situation indeed.

But as a prank, this guy has really set the bar to a new high.

However he had better steer well clear of the deaf community for awhile, because if they see his ass he might get a completely silent beat down, with an actual deaf interpreter standing nearby signing curses and insults in his direction.

This is not the first time he has appeared in S A. They showed video on ABC tonight from past appearances. He has a security pass around his neck. Someone had to approve him and knows who he is.

As an interpreter myself, I find this highly offensive to the deaf community as well as being a frightening lapse in security.

I take my job very seriously, as do my colleagues, and it is part of our Code of Ethics that we do not accept assignments we are not qualified to do. Does it sometimes happen that someone takes a job they don't have the skills for? Of course, but what this man did was unconscionable.

Various video clips emerged appearing to show the same man signing at previous ANC events. The same interpreter provided sign language for South African President Jacob Zuma’s speech at a military event last year.

Sadly, they are all passing the buck on the blame.

The Secret Service released a statement saying: "Agreed upon security measures between the U.S. Secret Service and South African Government security officials were in place during the recent memorial service in Johannesburg. Program items such as stage participants or sign language interpreters were the responsibility of the host organizing committee."

Hey Gryph, that last paragraph needs an interpretation - sign language or otherwise.

I don't see how this is any worse than Mrs. Palin spewing her word salad that is inteligible to anyone who speaks English.

Wasn't POTUS there? There is another incident in the Secret service this guy: Dan Bongino
Whose brother was in Cartagena, and he guarded POTUS at the parade where FLOTUS they were walking...!!! This asshole was ALSO on palin detail so no doubt know about Todd's pimping!
I wonder why he quit the service or was he made too? Well he is or was running for some gop office. Its just really scary.

These type of things are just not checked. This guys doing meaningless hand sigs and remember the two man and woman who crashed a WH party? With assholes like dan "guarding" I would be very afraid.
I can't believe no one DID anything about this guy?

Yes and Sarah endorsed him! He is a huge teabag and was guarding our POTUS!!! WTF is wrong with that picture?
I still wonder WHY he left. B/c of his involvedment in AK? Knowing about Todd's pimping of David Chaney?

I don't understand why the deaf community didn't report the imposter to the police during the FOUR HOURS this guy was on camera and make sure that he got his butt hauled off to jail for impersonating someone who was supposed to be there.

I think it's more offensive than funny and demeans the solemnity of this man's amazing life and passing. The deaf community depends on this service even more than hearing people of different languages do. It's not cool not being inclusive at an event for a man of peace who fought for inclusion and paid dearly for his courage.
Deaf Culture and all it's nuance is difficult for the hearing world to comprehend. They embrace their deafness, sometimes refusing cochlear implants out of solidarity for their community.

I toured the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and found it educational and quite enlightening.

Slightly O/T: here is what the photographer said about the 'selfie' our President took at the funeral of Mandela: "Schmidt also said that Obama's behavior was in keeping with the general mood at the service:

All around me in the stadium, South Africans were dancing, singing and laughing to honor their departed leader...the atmosphere was totally relaxed – I didn’t see anything shocking in my viewfinder, president of the US or not."

  14. Not a terrorist, not a prank - just some-one who knew a few signs and wanted to be famous.

As for the "selfie" - not worth a mention in the rest of the world - only in the USA is the media so keen to find something - anything - to use against the President - cannot believe the HATE they pass around - just like Sarah Palin - they cannot cope with an intelligent man living in the white house

    1. More like he had connections and his guy was making sure he got a nice paycheck. He's done it before. So someone is looking out for him and rehiring him despite everything. Probably even knows he's a fake. But he's someone's cousin or brother in law, plus having a sign language interpreter is prestigious; makes you look so 21st century and equal with all the developed countries dontcha know.

I'll bet he'll still be hired for a future event.

      mlaiuppa -
He was reportedly paid only $85 for the event. I am an interpreter and you NEVER have this kind of event with only one interpreter. There would always be at least two people taking turns, called 'teaming'. The rate for freelance interpreters in this country is anywhere from $35 to well over a hundred dollars an hour, depending on the type of event. Anyone who would accept $85 for 3-4 hours of solo work is NOT any kind of professional, and the agency that provided him is not to be trusted. I read today that the owners of the agency that hired him have disappeared. Hmmm...

This is how word salad sign language interpreter works.

Wrong venue, wrong speakers, wrong occassion.

We all know where and with whom the 'fake' sign language interpreter would truly be useful. To those who have no idea what the words mean that the salad shooter shoots so relentlessly and of late, too often, and with much calculated ignorance it makes no difference. She's speaking to 'rill Umurkins' dontcha know?

    Wow!
If it makes anyone feel any better lol, my esteemed hospital has hired two people in my career that were never nurses. The paprwork just kinda fell thru the cracks. One actually worked as a mightshift nurse for three years!! She did have a dehree but could not pass licensing exam. OK thats not soooo bad. We then also had a man who was not a nurse at all - no training and he made it to week 6 of orientation. and then was fired for being a bad nurse - they still didn't know he was an imposter til later!!

    1. I can kinda top that.

We had a strike about 15 years ago and the school district was so desperate to hire subs they weren't doing their due diligence. So a high school kid put on a shirt, tie and suit, grabbed a briefcase and showed up at his own school to sub and NO ONE questioned him. Not the office staff or fellow teachers. What few students finally figured it out kept silent because they thought it was a great prank and they were on the side of the striking teachers.

Kid made it all the way through the day.

It made the news that night.

That, along with the stripper that was subbing and some lady flashing her top in the parking lot all made the news.

After 5 days the district finally agreed to return to the bargaining table and talk.

  19. Wouldn't it be the case that if they had bothered to hire a REAL sign language interpreter, this wouldn't have happened? Oops!

And, btw, I have deaf neighbors and they are anything but silent since they have no idea how loud they actually are. If there was a beatdown, it would be a pretty noisy event.

Geez, Gryphen, lighten up, will ya! It's a JOKE. Why is everyone so serious? It's not as if one eugoogooly is different from any other. It's very common for people at funerals to speak about people they don't even know. "Nobel prize, 27 years in prison, world statesman... etc, etc..." It's all pretty much the same for everyone. Sure, it would have been funnier if SNL alum Garrett Morris had been available to shout the translation for the hearing impaired but this guy did the best he could do on short notice. I read somewhere he's already been booked to do prank deaf translations for 2015's 40th anniversary gala celebration of former Spanish dictator Generalísimo Francisco Franco's demise.

(btw, according to late breaking news reports Franco is STILL dead)

Well, sadly I'm not surprised. I work as a Teleprompter Operator (prompted for FLOTUS at a private fundraiser in 2012) as well as many other notable individuals. These big events come together through many different contractors and vendors. I often simply show up and show a license and say I'm working for so and so and then I'm left to my own devices. Usually, I have a contact person such as a producer or maybe the clients personal speechwriter. I'm hired through an established and respected private company. However, I'm sure there are folks out there who "hang a shingle" and if the event coordinator is overwhelmed or inexperienced (and maybe at the last minute realized they needed this service) they simply called the first person they found. Kind of like taking your chances on the yellow pages plumber when your sink springs a leak. I'm not making excuses for anyone especially with an event of this caliber, but mistakes happen just like the nurse example from a previous comment.
This type of person is one of those "I'll get away with it as long as I get away with it types." Some people do this to get their foot in the door and hopefully learn enough to "fake it til I make it." This guy simply seems like a complete charlatan.

The final truth is - this man broke no laws. There are no requirements for translators. The excuse is - he was NOT HIRED by anyone and did not collect a paycheck for his services.

He was interviewed on NPR this morning and said he suffered a schizaphrenic episode -- as someone above noted. I thought he sounded sincere and this really could be the truth. Very strange things happen with schizophrenia. Someone watching who knew this was not sign language should have brought it to the attention of an event official. IF what this man says is true then it could have saved him a lot of embarassment and would have allowed officials to get a real sign language interpreter in there.

  27. This was really scary!!! Shame on South African government to have this man so close to the World Leaders!!! I am almost deaf , but don't sign, and I can tell he was fake!!! He look like the youth in the church doing mime or sign off of Gospel music... Most of them make up signs...

This man admit to having an violence pass... was asked how often, he said a lot... Q_Q
