Pope Francis compares arrogant Christians to pagans. "It is an ugly thing."

Courtesy of Raw Story:

At his weekly General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis urged Christians to imitate Jesus Christ by being humble and “small among the small.”

“It is an ugly thing,” he said, according to Vatican Radio, “when you see a Christian who doesn’t want to humble himself, who doesn’t want to serve, a Christian who struts about everywhere: it’s ugly, eh? That is not a Christian: that’s a pagan!”

He warned Christians against placing themselves above others and called on the faithful to be in solidarity with the poor.

“Jesus Himself reminds us: He who has fed, welcomed, visited, loved one of the smallest and poorest of people, has done it for the Son of God,” the pope said.

Still holding out on my final verdict on this Pope, but damn I certainly like it when he knocks the legs out from under so-called "Christians" like Sarah Palin, Pat Robertson, and Franklin Graham.

However I take great umbrage over the comparison of arrogant Christians to pagans, because helping others and being humble is NOT specifically a Christian trait, and to say otherwise is also arrogant.

"small among the small" but men are, of course, the sole wielders of power.

Pope Francis needs to do some pretty serious soul searching before he can reach people that can use their brain.

Obviously the pope needs to meet a few more Pagans. Other than that, right on!

Boy do I like this Pope! He is right on. Look at the supposed arrogant 'christians' we have out there in our world today. Like a Sarah Palin, who is the furthest from living a life as a 'christian'. She a fraud, liar and racist! Nothing humble about her at all either!

  5. I have to echo anonymous 12:19. Some of the most intelligent, caring, and kind people I know would be classified as "Pagan".
The Christians (those in the league of Palin, Robertson, and all the good folk at Fox) who lay the Christianity ground rules here will just mock and ignore this Pope..... who does he think he is...the mouthpiece of God??? LOL!!! Thats a good one!!

Someone does need to explain to him that Pagan is a religion. This may be a translation thing though "pagan" vs. "Pagan."

Poor man has no idea what a Pagan or even an Atheist is. He is suffering from the early childhood teachings of the church. Pagans were depicted as so depraved that they sat at the right hand of Satan. Atheists were treated similarly. Seriously, we were led to beleive they probably had tails and horns and ate babies and puppies. We were also warned to stay away from anything to do with learning about things like that or we might turn to stone or suffer some other horrifying fate. I don't think many Catholics have ever thought much about what a Pagan or an Atheist really is or believes because of all the scary stuff we were told. That early indoctrination is why there is so much irrational garbage out there concerning the Atheist "religion".

Agree. As an Atheist I need please no god but myself. I have no problem with people gathering wealth and not sharing, but those people should no call themselves Christian. I take no issue with those who judge others and ignore the poor, however those people should not call themselves Christian.

By no means am I saying that all of us raised Atheist are uncaring and selfish individuals but we live by the behavioral guidelines learned from both school and parents and not by the tenets set forth by any religion. Our society and most families in general teach children to be caring and selfish behavior is generally not rewarded so even those of us raised without faith still recognize the overall moral structure of our society.

I really like how this Pope concentrates on what Jesus said and did and does not cherry pick the Old Testament like the hypocrites do.

Jesus was all about helping the poor, the sick, the homeless, those in prison,etc... Jesus said rich people will never see heaven. Jesus never said anything about gay people or women being second class, but he did say that the greatest commandment is love.

So, when people like the Duck guy and Sarah and Franklin go around the world misinforming people about Jesus, this Pope is being very clear what Jesus is about.

Were Sarah and the Duck guys and Franklin true believers in Jesus, they would be giving all they have to the poor. Jesus rode a donkey; he did not ride in the equivalent of a private plane.

This Pope earned his spot as Man of the Year and I have the feeling he has just begun.

I adore Pope Francis, but on Twitter, I reminded him that the Catholic church is steeped in paganism.

OK, I'm back on the fence with the New Improved Pope. He should know Paganism and the rites of his own church have a lot in common.
OK, he's covered Atheists, Marxists, and now Pagans. Who's next?
