Toward the end of December, Girl Scout USA’s official Twitter account tweeted out a Huffington Post story about the inspiring individuals who should be considered to be 2013′s “women of the year.” The article included figures like Beyonce, Malala Yousafzai, and Wendy Davis — and the organization asked its followers who else should be added to the list of “incredible ladies.” That was enough for anti-choice activists to call for a national boycott of the organization’s popular cookies, claiming the Girl Scouts have endorsed “pro-abortion politician Wendy Davis.”
“We’re asking you to boycott Girl Scout cookies in 2014,” reads a new site dedicated to the boycott, explaining that Davis should not be lifted up as a “worthy role model for our children.” The same accusation is being leveled against the group in regards to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who was included in a different news article about influential U.S. women that the Girl Scouts shared on its Facebook page.
The controversy has been building for several weeks. At the beginning of this month, Fox News’ Megyn Kelly hosted a panel discussion about the organization’s tweet. Panelists suggested that sharing any material related to Davis violates the Girl Scouts’ policy to remain uninvolved in politics.
I'm confused, I didn't know the LAST Girl Scout cookie boycott was over, that was launched in response to their supposed ties to Planned Parenthood.
And we all know how well THAT worked out.
Well I for one am going to purchase several boxes of Girl Scout cookies to go along with my donation to the Wendy Davis for Governor campaign.
Don't worry, my husband will buy as many as I let him AND give a cash tip that goes directly to the troop. I think last yr he bought 50 boxes, most went to the office.
ReplyDeleteAs for "violating" any policy, the GSofA have long picked strong women as role models for young girls so they know they can accomplish anything. And I think it's a low blow that Faux has lowered itself( I didn't know they could get any lower) by attacking girl scout cookies...come on, what person is anti thins mints?!
I, too, will be donating to Wendy Davis's campaign, and buying Girl Scout cookies, which we love. Go Girl Scouts!!!
ReplyDeletemore thin mints for me..............stay away the rest of you heathens.
ReplyDeleteMy first thoughts exactly! And you know that there are going to be a lot of "boycotters" sneaking those darned cookies!
DeleteWhat's next Leap Frog? They promote (gasp) learning and brain development! Can't be having that!
ReplyDeleteI guess the anti-choice groups won't be happy until they take away women's right to vote, work, inherit property or be treated as equal citizens of the United States. What's really sad is that women are part of that anti-choice group, voting and speaking out against their own best interests.
ReplyDeleteWhy oh WHY are we the only ones that see that, 7:36 AM?
DeleteI remember as a young teenager not being able to grasp why any woman would speak out against the Equal Rights Amendment.
DeleteI wouldn't worry about it too much. The pro-lifers will find someone to buy their favorite GS cookies on the down-low, just like they sneak their daughters into Planned Parenthood clinics for abortions. What a bunch of hypocrites.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's a Life Long Scout -- having progressed from kindergarten Daisy to HS senior year gold award.
ReplyDeleteShe and I will be buying extra cookies this year because of this boycott.
I always preferred the cookies to the Boy Scouts popcorn. Their popcorn was always stale.
ReplyDeleteI buy them and donate them to the local women's shelter. I can't eat them, too much sugar for me, but I love to give them away!
ReplyDeleteThe girls in our neighborhood are no longer Scouts; they've just aged out. It used to be that Girl Scouts set up in the front of local grocery stores but I haven't seen them in the last couple of years. I would certainly buy a couple of boxes of cookies - if only to show my support. (When we had the cookies in the past, we had to dole them out carefully because we are supposed to avoid sweets, like cookies.)

"Anti-choice groups decide to boycott Girl Scout cookies because the Girl Scouts don't hate Wendy Davis."
ReplyDeleteAll the more reason to consume them, I say!
Meh, just more fattening food for people that don't really need it. I doubt this will impact the Girl's sales in the least. Look around. Americans are under exercised, overweight and really, could any political ideology keep these fatties from their cookies? (we have a very high shelf at my gym, and on it is a box of Samoa GS cookies, they are probably 5 years old. We look at them both with desire and horrific repulsion while we work out. Is 2 hours of grueling, 500 calorie-burning body movement worth undoing for 3 little cookies? I somehow think not!)
ReplyDeleteJust say no people, and not because you take issue with their ideology!!
Not all of us are fat or have weight issues. Personally I am lucky enough to have good genes where I can eat any treat now and again that I want. I am 5'10" and weigh 120-125 pounds. I'll be eating thin mints with no guilt involved.
DeleteI'm going to let you guys in on a little known secret...you can get GS cookies year round...
ReplyDelete...at DOLLAR GENERAL!!!!!
Yep, not many people know this but the exact same cookies you know & love (thin mints, samosas, chocolate covered peanut butter, etc) made from the EXACT recipe & coming from the SAME factory are sold under the Dollar General GENERIC brand. (I forgot the name) And for the bargain price of $1.97.
I kid you not.
you know our country is going to hell when they politicize our girl scout cookies. hell no! not while i'm an american. our founding fathers and men have gone through hell and water and by golly i'm gonna have my cookies!!!!
