My heart is broken.

Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:

The ACN News Night team is coming back for a third and final season.

HBO has officially renewed the Jeff Daniels drama for a final installment, which is expected to air this fall. The news comes nearly six months after HBO programming president Michael Lombardo noted publicly that he'd be "shocked" if the series didn't return. The holdup has been creator Aaron Sorkin, who needed to pen the Steve Jobs film script before turning his attention back to Newsroom.

While I am glad the show is coming back (I never really doubted that it would) I am devastated that this will be its final season.

I have been fairly unabashed in proclaiming my love for this brilliant program and had hoped to follow it for many years to come, reporting on important stories from the past and, in many cases, reporting them the way others in the REAL media failed to report them.

Some have criticized it for its portrayal of women, and its focus on clumsy romantic banter, but none of that bothered me a great deal.

Especially when it offered up scenes like this.

No having this amazing show go off the air for good is going to be a serious loss to political and news junkies. I doubt we will soon see anything to replace it.

“Good for her!” Oliver beamed. “She’s going to do to sports what she did to politics. …

Wendy Davis - What a total contrast to the fraud and fakery that is Palin(s).

posting this here in to get it some attention...I didn't write it (wish I was capable) but I was blown away by it and am spreading it as I can:

    Dear Texas and the GOP
I am sorry to announce that in Texas using a god against women will no longer be tolerated. Like the Taliban you emulate, you have bent and misused your religion for political and non-religious gain. Seeking power over other humans beings is not why I single handedly wrote your constitution for you.(yes, I plagiarized the Magna Carta & common English law).
I have sent a woman to straighten out your problems. Please pay attention to her, as I am no longer listening to you
    Signed;
The artist formerly known as your god

    1. Hilarious.

And that's gonna hurt. Springsteen is the chink in Christie's armor.

Christie idolizes Springsteen. He isn't going to take it well that his idol blames him for the jam.

Fallon scored a perfect 10 on that.

Didn't know where to put this but I wanted to make sure everyone knew that Jimmy Fallon & The Boss did a hilarious song last night about Bridgegate. On UTube and on The Bergen Record newspapers site.

It was outstanding and all channels I've seen so far today are showing it! Jimmy Fallon is so talented and creative. We are going to be seeing a lot of him in our futures!

It was great. That is going to hurt Christie more than anything else because he idolizes Springsteen.

Now THIS is really great news for TEXAS!

    https://twitter.com/jeremybird/statuses/423263212495446017

On Tuesday evening, Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis released her campaign’s fundraising figures for the last half of 2013 and they were nothing short of amazing. The State Senator was able to raise $12.2 million dollars through the end of the year, which outpaced her Republican opponent, Texas’ Attorney General Greg Abbot. Despite having the support of several extremely rich donors, Abbot trailed Davis by $700,000 in fundraising efforts.

Per Davis, the key to her overwhelming success in fundraising was individual contributors. While Abbot relied on large contributions from a small group of wealthy individuals and corporations, Davis’ was spread out over more than 71,000 individual contributors.

Thrilled to announce #TeamWendy has raised more than $12.2 million from 71,843 individual contributors so far. Thank you for your support!

    — Wendy Davis (@WendyDavisTexas) January 15, 2014

Obviously, Davis’ message is resonating across the state and she will be an extremely tough candidate to beat. Abbot has the advantage of being a Republican in Texas, which would almost certainly spell an easy victory for him in normal circumstances. However, Davis no no normal candidate. Her star has only shown brighter and brighter since her legendary filibuster on the Texas Senate floor when she bravely tried to stop the state’s legislature from ramming through an extremely restrictive law on abortion and women’s health.

What Abbot and the GOP has to fear with Davis is her national profile. She is a huge star now within the Democratic Party. Davis is getting national attention still, months after her historic moment on the Senate floor. On Wednesday morning, she was interviewed by Maria Shriver on the Today Show. As Election Day gets closer and closer, she is only going to continue to raise more money from individual donations by sheer name recognition. For women in Texas, she has become a rallying point. And for women and progressives outside of Texas, she has become a symbol, someone to support even if she doesn’t represent their state.

Abbot is in for a serious fight with Davis. Expect to see extremely disgusting, underhanded political tactics in the near future...

NBC’s Today profiled Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate and state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) on Wednesday as part of a regular feature on successful women they have dubbed “Doing it All.” The segment was described by host Savannah Guthrie as one focused on “giving advice for women on tackling today’s challenges.”

“One woman who knows them all too well is Democratic Texas state Senator Wendy Davis,” she continued.

Maria Shriver noted that Davis became a national political figure when she stood 11 hours “in her pink tennis shoes” to postpone the passage of a restriction on abortions in Texas after 20 weeks of gestation and the augmentation of health standards in clinics.

“Everybody says Wendy Davis is an overnight sensation,” Shriver observed. “Does it irritate you that people call you an overnight sensation?”

“I’m not an overnight sensation,” Davis countered. “I am the epitome of hard work and optimism.”

    2. I see her on the Democratic Presidential ticket for 2020 or 2024. Her terms would be a great follow-up to President Hillary Clinton's.

If you need a good show to watch there is a British show called the Hour. It is as stylish as Madmen but covers a news show post WWII during the 50's instead of advertising. Love it!

I had hopes it would inspire the milquetoast "reporters" of today, to buckle down and do what they are supposed to do.

But then, in spite of how WE ALL felt inspired by the characters of "West Wing" that politics could be a means of really doing some good, it doesn't seem to have rubbed off on many in that "biz."

  12. That might be Sorkin's choice to have a final season to close it up properly. West Wing's last season left things hanging IMO.

They say you should always leave on a high note, with the audience wanting more. Looks like they'll be doing just that.

I have really enjoyed it (watching bootleg episodes on the internet) but I understand if Sorkin doesn't want to continue. It must be a lot of pressure on him since he's writing each episode by himself.

I felt the same way when the West Wing went off the air. Smart, intelligent dialogue is refreshing and so lacking on TV.

Having worked in a newsroom in a small town I can’t quite speak to the problems in "big" journalism. But my newspaper was considered a place to train/intern young journalists so I am sure they were aware of the tension between ad buyers and the very real efforts by management to avoid embarrassing alpha community members and businesses that kept the community employed (thus, no investigative reporting!). When money is the main driver of news it also decides where the fingers are pointed. Unfortunately, this has always been so. Get the money out of the business and there will be transparency.

Absolutely crushing news... I love this show so much and will miss it on HBO! Hopefully someone comes up with another incredibly smart, funny & timely show like this soon

  16. No HBO so I'm trying to wait until Season 2 is available legally (can get Season 1 now) so I can binge watch. I'd watch ANYTHING by Sorkin.

I can't fathom why networks kill some fantastically unique shows. I was hooked on "The West Wing". When "Newsroom" first came out, I have to be honest and say that I didn't like the lack of dimension in the female characters, but I kept watching and it grew on me. I saw so much promise for this show! And now this? I'll buy all three series and hope that HBO comes to it's senses and makes a similar show, hopefully with Alan Sorkin at the helm.

    Season 2 was a drag

  19. Yes, Gryph, that opening scene from the first episode was a powerfully moving indictment of the selfish hypnotic trance society appears to have fallen into as it abandons all sense of personal responsibility.

I particularly liked the "Amen" episode. Lucky me, I can watch it anytime now because my bride got me the complete series of the first season of Newsroom for Christmas.

When it was first launched, Newsroom did have a positive effect on the talking heads who deliver our news, and none more so than Soledad O'Brien. Suddenly she began shocking the pols she was interviewing by asking relevant questions (oh my!). It didn't last very long, though, and may have led to Soledad's demise on CNN.

Unfortunately the news media has decided that propaganda is the way to improve their ratings and sell us stuff; never realizing that what we're really after is just simply the unadulterated news.
