So much for Chris Christie's presidential aspirations.

Sorry Republicans, but if you thought that Christie was your great white hope for 2016, you have another think coming.

The guy is a complete scumbag.

Everybody is covering this story today, but if you really want to get to the  meat of the matter there is no better place to go then to Rachel Maddow.

Chris Hayes also did a great job as well.

This scandal will make not one bit of difference to Republicans. They will not acknowledge the lies or the crimes.

The liberal media is making it all up.

Be prepared for Christie to be the Republican nominee.

There's one aspect of this scandal that all the pundits seem to be missing: the busiest bridge in the world is snarled for FIVE DAYS, and the governor of the state responsible is claiming he didn't know anything about it while it was happening? I mean, he must not have known about it, right, or he would have asked his staffers to find out what was going on and fix the problem ASAP. So is he really that out of touch? Because no one is going to believe that IF this was something staffers had done on their own initiative, that they wouldn't have reversed it immediately if he had said, "This traffic jam is awful; fix it right now." So why didn't he say that? It can only be because it was done with his blessing.

On a MUCH larger scale the repubs. in DC are doing the exact same thing to regular workers. They are refusing to pass any of President Obama/s attempts at job creation, unemployment benefits, health care, all because he is a demo0cratic president. Christir\e made life miserable for the commuters, just because he COULD and pay back the mayor who did not endorse him. If he was unaware of this, I doubt very much that he was hiking the Appalatian Trail like Sanford. Who wants another president (like W) who disappears when disaster strikes?

      Christie’s Waterloo

The George Washington Bridge fiasco is a deeply damning window on the governor's administration

In the best possible light, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie built a top staff of lying thugs who threatened lives and safety to serve his political ends. If not, Christie is a lying thug himself.

Emails and text messages among his close aides made public Wednesday documented that in September they gleefully engineered George Washington Bridge lane closures to punish the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee for failing to endorse their boss’ reelection.

Local officials say the gridlock they caused delayed ambulances in responding to four calls, including one involving an unconscious 91-year-old woman who later died.

Christie’s presidential ambitions are all but kaput, as he will be lambasted and lampooned as a man of low character and horrible judgment — again viewing him in the most favorable way.

The Port Authority’s sudden, unannounced closing of bridge entrance lanes produced hours-long backups for four days. They ended only after Executive Director Patrick Foye discovered the shutdowns, which were later traced to rogue orders issued by Christie PA appointee David Wildstein, a high school buddy, and to a cover-up by Bill Baroni, Christie’s top person at the bi-state agency.

For months, responsibility remained clouded. During that time, Christie made light of the charges. He joked that the press was suggesting he had moved traffic cones personally. Last month, he described the affair as “not that big a deal.” He supported Baroni’s story that the lane closures were part of a traffic study.

His aides’ communications, made public Wednesday, put the lie to that.

    6. It's sad but an inescapable part of being pld is knowing there'd be no 1964 Civil Rights Act without the support of Dirksen, who was Senate Minority Leader. And yes he was a Senator from Illinois and had no relation to Alska. I chose Hickel and Hammond because they were both active in Alaska while I was there and Hickel was a national figure as Secretary of the Interior and known and admired by me before I moved to Alaska because he was fired by Nixon because of his opposition to Vietnam. I could have also used Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and now the Cabinet as a example. I've disagreed violently at times with all of these Republicans but also found common ground and knew always that they were principled humans with integrity and a desire to serve the common good. These are qualities that distinguish them from the contemporary crop of unprincipled Republicans.

Chris Christie’s problem is that he’s really, truly a bully

The release of e-mails suggesting that Gov. Chris Christie's top aides choked off transportation to a small town as political retribution against the town's mayor are a huge deal. He enacted the greedy, heartless GOP agenda in his first term...then turned down the new tunnel to NY project which would have created great union jobs for years, not to mention a modern tunnel. Due to late paperwork he screwed NJ out of stimulus money and no one but Chris Hayes has reported on all the billions missing in Sandy relief. Just the touristy ad cost millions more than was projected because the first agency hired refused to use the governors family.....so they hired another one who would. I watched this guy all during the Sandy thing.....it was easy for him to follow Obama's posture of caring for the cameras, the diff being Obama is sincere and empathy is real. NJ was blind, deaf & dumb not to review his first term...he is a Republican tried & true and will screw everyone except the rich. Now it is finally national news...you can add class A liar to his class A bully title. I loved the mayor in Fort Lee...he is the type of politician we all love.

Christie Administration's Bridge Lane Closure Slowed Search for Missing 4-Year-Old, Says Official

"There was a missing child that day. The police had trouble conducting that search because they were tied up directing traffic," says Jan Goldberg, a Fort Lee councilman who works with local emergency personnel. Police found the missing child, a four-year-old. "But with the streets in the condition they were, I would venture to say that the search took longer," Goldberg says.

Ila Kasofsky, a Fort Lee councilwoman, tells Mother Jones that ambulances and other emergency vehicles could not get through the gridlock. In the aftermath of the lane closures, Kasofsky says she spoke with a Fort Lee resident who couldn't get over the bridge to support her husband through major surgery. Another Fort Lee woman was unable to pick up her son after his dialysis session.

Police Chief Keith Bendul cited these problems when he spoke to New Jersey press in September. "On Monday, while all this was going on, we had to contend with a missing four-year-old, a cardiac arrest requiring an ambulance, and a car running up against a building," he said. "What would happen if there was a very serious accident?"

Chris Christie Self Destructs In Press Conference and Scapegoats Staff for Bridgegate

Fox News Downplayed Chris Christie Scandal All Day

...The network's relative blackout of the story continued into the evening. A review of TVEyes, the website that lets users search through transcripts and video of past television broadcasts, shows that Christie didn't come up on the "O'Reilly Factor" or on "Hannity." Greta Van Susteren and Megyn Kelly both covered the story, though both led their shows off with other things—in Kelly's case, the criticisms of the Obama administration by former defense secretary Bob Gates. Bret Baier also briefly mentioned the scandal on his show.

By Thursday morning, the network seemed to have resigned itself to covering the story more, as it led the Fox News website and was discussed repeatedly on "Fox and Friends."

Intriguingly, the network's idiosyncratic handling of the Christie scandal came just as details leaked about a big new biography of Fox News chief Roger Ailes. The book, according to CNN's Brian Stelter, "expands on previous reports, including one by Bob Woodward of The Washington Post, that Ailes tried to enlist New Jersey governor Chris Christie and then-general David H. Petraeus to run against President Barack Obama in 2012."

UPDATE: A Media Matters study on Thursday showed that Fox News spent just under 15 minutes covering the Christie story on Wednesday. CNN, by contrast, spent nearly two-and-a-half hours on it.

Four Uncomfortable Questions From Chris Christie's Bridgegate Press Conference

The thrust of Gov. Chris Christie's (R-N.J.) Bridgegate press conference this morning has been: I didn't know, my staff lied to me, I'm so embarrassed, I'm sorry.

Let's say he's telling the truth. That's almost worse than if he's lying.

Here are the four big uncomfortable questions that arise from the story Chris Christie is telling today:

How did Christie not know? There were 117 days between when the Bridgegate story broke and when the governor learned that one of his Deputy Chiefs of Staff, Bridget Kelly, had called for the lane closures. One of his close confidants whom he just selected to run the New Jersey Republican Party, Bill Stepien, is also implicated. Despite the fact that increasing national attention was being paid to this story through the fall, Christie — who has a background as an aggressive prosecutor! — had no idea some of his closest allies were involved. Why was he so oblivious? Christie has been reduced to insisting that his staff has been out to control and lying to him about what they're doing. That's not an ideal talking point to have to lean on.
Why would Christie's appointees have thought this was a good idea? Politicians survive scandals of staff misbehavior all the time. But in this instance, the misbehavior was conducted on Christie's behalf, in order to execute a political strategy to benefit the governor. How did Christie create a culture in which his appointees in his administration and at the Port Authority would get together and assume this was something the governor would want them to do?
Why didn't anybody narc on Bridget Kelly? The governor says Kelly lied to him and said she had no involvement in the bridge lane closures. But Kelly wasn't the only person who knew Kelly was involved. In August, she emailed David Wildstein, Port Authority Director of Interstate Capital Projects: "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee." Wouldn't Wildstein have told the governor, in the process of tendering his resignation, that Kelly had told him to do it? Bill Baroni, Christie's top appointee at the Port Authority, was also checking in with Wildstein about whether "Trenton" was happy with the handling of the closures. Why didn't Baroni tell the governor his staff had known?
When did Christie really learn about his staff's involvement? Christie described discovering the story in the Bergen Record yesterday morning after his workout. But he also said he hasn't slept well "the last two nights" because of his soul searching. If Christie didn't know about this story until Wednesday morning, why did it cause him to lose sleep on Tuesday night?

Even easier. Did he have a television and wonder why the bridge lanes were closed and traffic was clogged? Did he call any of his own appointees to ask what's going on? Or was he busy stuffing chrispy cremes and big gulps down his gullet?

Embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) thinks it's "crazy" to even consider the idea of resigning over the George Washington Bridge scandal that he maintains he had nothing to do with.

"Did you ever for even a brief moment entertain the idea of perhaps you should resign?" asked a reporter at a Thursday press conference.

"God no," he responded. "That's a crazy question, man. I'm telling you, I had nothing to do with this. So you know, no, I never gave any thought to doing that at all, nor would I. What was I thinking about last night when I couldn't go to sleep? How did this happen? That's what I was thinking about."

The fact that Christie chose the “I didn’t know” path as his escape route shows that the governor’s political future could be a sinking ship. The way he is handling this story ensures that it is not going to go away.

Reporters and media will likely keep digging. If/when they find evidence that Christie knew about this, the governor of New Jersey’s political future will be toast. Christie flatly stated that he had no knowledge of this issue. It’s planning, or its execution. The governor took a big risk, and if he is not being totally honest, he will be caught.

Early in his speech, he lamented that he hasn't gotten much sleep in the past three days.... then went on to say he just heard about it this morning, citing the exact time. What was he losing sleep over three nights in a row?

I think the most damning thing for Christie is that Cuomo, New York's governor, recognized the seriousness of the situation with the lane closures. Cuomo was the one that acted to open up the lanes. If Christie hadn't known in advance about the conspiracy started by his staff and friends, he should have contacted his buddy at the Port Authority to open up the lanes. He's lying and I doubt that he will get away with it.

It's pretty damning that the Port Authority is so badly run that they don't have a chain of evidence for every single command that can totally f' up such an important access route. What do they do at Port Authority? They can't clear a traffic jam unless a state governor tells them to get off their @sses and do their job? Overpaid political flunkies! Heck of a job, Brownie.

My personal take on this whole mess is that MANY people were aware that some pretty nasty (probably criminal) collateral stuff could come to light once thinking people dug into it. So a lot of pressure was expended to keep the lid on. Similar event? The two-bit break-in at an obscure place called "The Watergate".

Even if he didn't actually give the orders for this shutdown, which I highly doubt considering his reputation for bullying anyone who disagrees with him, his claim that he was not aware of it until recently is absurd.

Having been born and raised on Long Island, I can guarantee that those kind of metro NY traffic nightmares are all over the news. Something of that magnitude, especially with the Mayor of Fort Lee sending emails and calling to beg for help, should certainly be on the top of Christie's list of crises to deal with immediately.

The fact that it went on for FOUR days before it was dealt with from someone outside of his office makes Christie's claims of ignorance a lie. OR it shows that he has no business running a 7-11, no less a large state.

Fox host upset media is covering Gov Christie’s ‘bridge thing’ instead of bashing Obama

Fox News host Steve Doocy on Thursday was upset over the media coverage surrounding leaked emails which inexplicably tie New Jersey Chris Christie’s (R) administration with lanes closing on part of the busiest bridge in the world which was done out of political retaliation.

Instead, Doocy thinks the media should cover former Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ new book in order to bash President Obama.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck said, “Imagine the commander and chief claiming he supports you, but not your mission. To hear any of that coming forward in this book is just shocking!”

Doocy responsed, “Yeah, and I was watching one news channel yesterday, you would think that this would be a big story… all about the bridge thing… with Christie.”

He actually said “the bridge thing.”

The Raw Story reports, “After a segment asserting that extending unemployment benefits hurt people who don’t have jobs, the network turned to Heather Nauert, who read a 37-second update on the Christie story — and then the network quickly returned for another interview to find out what veterans thought about Obama’s mistrust of the military.”

The “Maddow Show” reported on this story weeks ago, but now emails are coming to light which reveal that Christie’s closest aides handed down the orders to tie up traffic, even as Christie himself maintains that his aides misled him.

“Traffic jams are not news,” Maddow said. “Traffic jams caused by poorly organized ‘traffic studies’ are not even really big news stories. But if the state of New Jersey is being run in such a way that control of interstate assets is being manipulated on purpose to punish specific towns and even specific individuals for political reasons, then that really is news.”

“That is public corruption,” she said, and it’s why, no matter how much he wants to be, “Chris Christie will never be president.”

    Charlie Crist memoir:

    Crist describes Palin as "different."

"She was definitely different from anyone I'd ever campaigned with. … She gave the speeches she was asked to. She spoke with Sean Hannity of Fox News and Elisabeth Hasselbeck from The View. … But other than that, she talked to almost no one," Crist writes.

"She was campaigning in a vital swing state, and still never asked me: 'What's going on in Florida? What are the local issues here? What are people thinking about?' Even if she didn't care, why not make idle conversation?"

GOP Newspaper: Christie is a "Thug" and "he's Finished"

When you've lost the business wing of the party, where can you go? The editorial page of the New York Daily News, the page that robustly endorsed Romney in 2012 and Bush in 2004, just published a blistering editorial calling this scandal "Christie's Waterloo" and pronouncing him finished as a presidential candidate.

'In the best possible light, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie built a top staff of lying thugs who threatened lives and safety to serve his political ends. If not, Christie is a lying thug himself.'

    Pooooooooooooooooooow!

'Christie's presidential ambitions are all but kaput, as he will be lambasted and lampooned as a man of low character and horrible judgment, ” again viewing him in the most favorable way.'

    Oooooooooooooooooof!

'[if you take him at his word] Christie stands as a hardball-playing governor who horribly misjudged or distorted the character of those around him and compounded the felony by trying to skate by their wrongdoing without full investigation. Take his denials of knowledge with skepticism, and the man is a monster. '
    Christie's Waterloo
    Thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuud!!

Wow - this is a big fucking deal! It may even get a brief mention on the Sunday shows after they flagellate their weekly Ben Ghazi horse.

What #bridgegate tells us about the GOP

I know we’ve all had a laugh at New Jersey governor Chris Christie’s fall from grace. Documents have come to light that his top aides were involved in closing access lanes to the George Washington Bridge as political payback for the mayor of Fort Lee not giving Christie his endorsement for re-election. And his marathon news conference today, even though being massaged by the feckless national punditry, was a farce of gigantic proportions.

But there’s something serious underlying the Christie debacle.

In a fit of vindictiveness, he either ordered an act which would perforce put lives at risk, or, like Henry II, mumbled “Will no one rid me of this turbulent mayor”, and loyal aides knowing his bent acted upon his ambiguous wishes. Either way, Christie does not come off well.

His press conference was a master class in GOP damage control. He spent the majority of the conference in casting himself as the victim. Another chunk he spent in excoriating his mendacious staff for lying to him. (Note, he was angry for them “lying” to him, not for their actions.) He spared almost no thought for the very real danger in which he put the people he was elected to serve.

That speaks to the core of the modern Republican Party. It really has no concern for regular people. They’re merely voters to be conned into supporting the party. Once electoral success is achieved, they can be dispensed with as so many pawns on chessboard. The GOP playbook when caught in malfeasance is to cast about for blame, play the victim, and ignore the real damage done. We see this in the fight over unemployment insurance. Anyone with a soul would realize that there people who are still feeling the aftershocks of the Great Recession, and that help is still needed. But those people are so much chaff for a wider political agenda, which is to destroy the last vestiges of the Great Society, which the modern GOP hates with a visceral hatred.

Christie is merely the grandest expression of a deeply seeded Republican pathology. Republicans love their country; they just happen to hate most of the people who inhabit it. People are merely means to an end, and that end is power. The powerful to whom they’re handmaidens have no concern for ordinary people, and that mindset informs their political minions. One could say that their worldview boils down to “The beatings will continue until morale improves”; however, they don’t care about morale, they just employ the beatings to maintain control.

So, as we chuckle and chortle at Chris Christie, remember that the clown masks a deadly serious persona. The bullying, the misanthropy, and the lack of empathy are not bugs; they’re a well-designed feature.

It's driving me crazy that the media is ignoring the buying of domain names by Christie's main man. The reporter who broke this story for The Bergen Record had his name bought by this guy! If you enter the reporters name in a search engine, you are forwarded to a competing newspaper. That's a huge deal to me. Apparently this guy has purchased many, many domain names. Who paid for those? Why won't someone ask?

  47. Yes, he is a scumbag and a bully. But they'll forget and it won't matter that vindictiveness and retaliation are an integral part of his character.

He's their best shot. And he's still a Republican. And by 2014 he will have lost more weight.

    People will forget.

If the media attempts to use any old pictures they'll be attacked for being fat bigots.

Christie's staff fell on their swords and took responsibility for everything, thereby absolving their boss. Yes, it makes him look weak and incompetent not to have known what his staff was doing behind his back but that's better than showing that he knew everything, was behind the plan and is the bully we know him to be.

Just watch. The other R candidates will try to use it against Christie (I'm thinking Cruz) but it's nothing compared to the baggage Ryan, Cruz and the others will bring to the table.

Time to explain the obvious, kiddies. Gov. Christie has stated he had nothing to do with the bridge scandal and has fired the people responsible. If those staffers claim that Christie did know about this scandal and can prove it, then Christie is finished. If not, then left-wingers have got nothing. It will be simply a repeat of Harry Reid lying about Mitt Romney's taxes.

I'm vaguely familiar with this bridge and the Ft Lee Area. I avoided the bridge as much as possible during rush hour, but the way it's set up, Ft Lee basically surrounds one end of the bridge, and the loss in business over two weeks must be insurmountable. I'm sure the whole area took a needless economic hit.
The thing with Christie is his hubris and denial of being a bully, as if people don't have eyes and ears.

He joked with the pesky press saying he was a cone handler while it was going on, he was wearing overalls and a hard hat, so people didn't recognize him.... insert laugh track. Then gets his roids in an uproar when asked if he knew why the bridge was backed up.
This couldn't have come at a worse time. The GOP wants him to do the bunny hop from state to state to gotv for the Republicans, he was paving his way to running for President, and getting himself all svelte and handsome to pick up the female voters (cough cough). And Karma comes along and Bridgenado happens. This is just the beginning, there's no way he'll come out of this unscathed.
