Wrong Commie!
Hey @CocaCola This is America. English, please. #SB48
— Saved By The Blood (@vonzion) February 3, 2014
You can't sing an American song in another language! #boycottcoke
— spencinator (@taylorspencer3) February 3, 2014
@foryzeal22 @pepsi @CocaColaCo I agree...Coke with the worst ad in history. #boycottcoke
— Peter J Santore (@PeterJSantore) February 3, 2014
@CocaCola WTF. America the Beautiful was meant to be sung in our accepted language. #boycottcoke Drink @pepsi
— Jas (@NHTdad) February 3, 2014
Even Sarah Palin's favorite fake news guy got in on the act.
Couldn't make out that song they were singing. I only speak English.
— toddstarnes (@toddstarnes) February 3, 2014
So was Coca-Cola saying America is beautiful because new immigrants don't learn to speak English?
— toddstarnes (@toddstarnes) February 3, 2014
But hey, remember, the Right Wing is NOT racist. You know if I was a betting man I would have expected THIS commercial to upset more people. But what do I know?
So RW Todd Starnes is boasting that he only speaks English? Typical RW, proud of their ignorance. And so afraid of words that he doesn't understand, how scary. Just stay ignorant, Todd.
ReplyDeleteThought it was beautiful. Screw those idiots.
ReplyDeleteSecond that! It was beautiful.
DeleteWhat's especially ridiculous is that I'm pretty sure that one of the languages they sang in was Hawaiian. So sorry, what's that everyone's been saying again about how immigrants to a new land should have to learn the language that's already being spoken there? (see also https://xkcd.com/84/)
ReplyDeleteI also believe there was part of it sung in a Native American language. (Don't know enough to say which one, be it Navaho, Lakota, or some other).
DeleteSMH at the ignorance in this country.
I really don't like the taste of Coke. I only drink Pepsi. But I'm only going to buy Coke this month. Kind of a reverse boycott. Beautiful commercial. (And much better than Rmoney's rendition on the campaign trail last year.)
ReplyDeleteBeats me how anybody could watch that video and not get all teary-eyed. And proud, too.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha. Sit on a Pepsi bottle, you asshats.
ReplyDeleteMake that a two liter bottle or a fire hydrant:)
DeleteThis morning on a radio talk show in Minneapolis, listeners were calling in with their thoughts about the ad. One knuckle dragger said that any song about America should be sung using the "American" language because that is the language that god speaks in.
ReplyDeleteI liked the ad. It is a great way to display what a melting pot this country is.
I KNEW they thought God was speaking to them every afternoon during Rush's hate show. Hate to tell them, but God started the world in the Middle East, and the first texts are in Aramaic, I think. I'm sure Starnes would have no idea that the Bible comes in many languages..after all..AMERICA=God, or something. I'm certain that's news to the Creator.
DeleteFirst off, both Pepsi and Coke are not good for any of us to drink! Secondly, I thought the commercial to be heart warming and appropriate!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful commercial! Is there anything that the RW won't whine about?! I'm a Coke drinker and will continue to be a Coke drinker.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Anyone that would drink Pepsi would have sex with Sarah Palin.
DeleteOr maybe did.
The RWNJ's are making much ado about nothing...as usual.
ReplyDeleteI gotta say at first I was confused but as the song went on it filled me with a strong sense of patriotism. Give us your poor, your tired huddled masses. America at its finest.
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteNeck down and rotate.
ReplyDeleteThat made me wish my grandparents hadn't been so quick to "lose" their primary language. I work with people from all over the world and only the Americans speak just one language.
ReplyDeleteExactly. We lived in Switzerland for six months. I had French in high school and college, but we were outside German Zurich (can you imagine, a country with TWO accepted languages!) Our kids were expected to learn German in school..immersion.Our daughter had already had two years of French, so she took both. They both came back better thinkers, speakers, and writers. Knowing another language is a must in this world. Starnes, like so many others, is lazy and stupid.
DeleteMy grandmother came to this country from Ukraine as a 14-year-old, on a ship all by herself. She married a farmer and, when her children went to school, she insisted they speak only English at home because it was the only way she could learn. She eventually taught herself to speak, read and write in English.
DeleteSome of my fondest memories are of when she would tell a story about 'the old days' and get so excited that she would unconsciously switch into Ukrainian.
My biggest regret was that I never had her teach me more than a few words.
I took a year of Russian in college (since that was the closest language they had) and traveled to Ukraine several years later, long after my grandmother had passed away. I loved walking around and seeing old women in babushkas who looked and sounded just like Grandma!
Uh oh, now the obese, white, conservative, racist community is going to boycott Coke? So let me get this straight, they've boycotted Girl Scout cookies and now Coke? Are we going to see a decrease in diabetes and morbid obesity amongst the ranks of the racist conservatives? Looks like Michelle Obama might just win this one :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat point!!
DeleteWhen will the uneducated snow bunny chime in? or is she too 'busy' with the snow machine race thingie? Funny how she said that this 'is our busiest time of the year.' I thought salmon fishing was their busy time? Or was it hunting organic meat for the freezer? Or running after kids' 'games?' I know Sarah was busy with something.
DeleteI'm not certain given our recent weather that the Iron Dog is even going to happen, much less the Iditarod. Unless snow happens soon it would seem to me that these races might be toast this year.
DeleteNope. No change in the obesity rate since they still have their racist, homophobic Chick fil A to eat!
DeleteI loved the commercial and it's absolutely disgusting at the negative reaction BUT i am not surprised in the least. Yes, these idiots are proud of their ignorance and bigotry -- they wear it proudly. Coca Cola has been uses these kinds of commercials for years...anyone of any decent age will remember the old 'i'd like to teach the world to sing' commercials from the 70s that showed people of all different races/backgrounds....
ReplyDeleteOk, which America are the rwnj/teabaggers talking about? Can they be more specific? Isn't there a North, Central and South America? If North America, are they speaking about the USA or Canada?
ReplyDeleteThey just keep saying America, so as far as I'm concerned, the commercial was singing in the American language(s). :-)
I love that many of the comments from the racist brain trust referred to "America the Beautiful" as "our national anthem".
ReplyDeleteSuch patriots, they are.
I woke up to this "controversy" today--- Yes, I admit that I did not watch the Super Bowl. I suppose that means I must not be a "real" American according to Sister Sarah.
ReplyDeleteI was one who loved Coke's 1971 commercial "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRbQ-y-FxTg
This new Coke commercial is just another take on people living in harmony no matter culture or language.
How Americans who almost all come from varying cultures can reject their brother-sister Americans has always baffled me.
Self-hate is just not pretty to watch.
For example, many of these same folks might admire the work of actor/singer Mandy Patinkin (Chicago Hope, Criminal Minds, Homeland, etc.)
Would he be rejected, as well, for singing "American" songs in Yiddish? One of his songs is a combo of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" w/ a bit of "God Bless America". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXTauo3I7A8
In this link he is going around getting folks to learn a bit of it.... http://vimeo.com/36290883
Sometimes my brain almost explodes when trying to follow the thought process of folks who seem intellectually impaired.
Next thing you know they'll want to take down the Statue of Liberty.....
DeleteWelcome to the REAL WORLD RW! Guess they do not travel.
ReplyDeleteWith their thinking, shouldn't it have been sung in one of our Native AMERICAN languages then?
ReplyDeleteI thought it was beautiful, patriotic, and everything this country is supposed to stand for. This is unbelievably disgusting, racist and most certainly perpetuating the ugly American theme.
My thought exactly.
DeleteUnless they're 100% Native American and speak the language of their particular tribe, they have no business complaining about this ad because THEY are foreigners as well!
The keyword there is 'civilized'.
DeleteThe yahoos who have their panties in a twist over this ad don't quite qualify as civilized.
A little history
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_the_Beautiful
Most of the civilized world speaks more than one language.
ReplyDeletePeople likeTodd Starnes are an example of what is wrong with this country.
USA USA USA.... bullshit
Fat people boycotting their favorite sugar water, say it ain't so!
ReplyDeleteWhat are they going to think when they find out Katharine Lee Bates (the lyricist) was a lesbian who left the Republican party over their refusal to endorse the League of Nations.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin must believe in the Sarah Palin Curse......
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin posted a picture of their Seahawk's booster club cards after the Seahawks won the Super Bowl....
LOL
Sarah learned her lesson after voting for McCain and cursing him.
The Sarah Palin Curse is nothing to fuck with.
I'll bet every one of those singers could spell better than those who were complaining.
ReplyDeleteHEY COKE!
ReplyDeleteKeep it simple - we're ignorant ya know.
I watched the Super Bowl at a hostel in the Panama highlands last night, so I didn't get to see the commercials. This one was beautiful. Thank you so much for posting it, Jesse.
ReplyDeleteFunny how all the people here from Switzerland, Belgium, England, France, Germany and all over Central and South America speak English. Thank goodness (for my sake). I envy their ability to speak so many languages. I speak a passable Spanish, but I sure wish I knew as many languages as most of my fellow hostelers do.
Negee,
ReplyDeleteTa' hu Gee che neemee. Ta' naygeebygee.
Little Rabbit
BTW the above is an American language, one of the hundred or so tribal languages that are the true American languages. Want to know what I said? It's simple learn "American". :)
Considering everything, you're very good humored about all this idiocy, Little Rabbit!
DeleteWado.
Little Rabbit,
DeleteLOVE your comment well said.
MJ Matoza
Fear is very vital to religion and the right wing. This is scary for them.
ReplyDeleteI wish everyone who objected to this commercial would tweet their displeasure. That way we could identify all the bigoted idiots and avoid them.
ReplyDeleteMost of us don't tweet or have face books. We'll leave it to you that have social media presence to do it for us because a lot of us don't really run with the social media thing.
DeleteLeave it to me? I don't tweet or have a facebook page either. I was being facetious to make a point, that people hold these views in their hearts and some of them even say it in public (despite the fact that it makes them look horrible). Wouldn't it be nice if we could identify the bigots more easily?
DeleteTeaBaggers are NOW embracing Chris Christie as he has accepted their invitation to speak at CPAC in March. Finally he is sufficiently corrupted enough for them.
ReplyDeleteSpeaker line-up so far is listed on CPAC page - the usual tea baggers. It shows Palin as "invited" but of course she's waiting to answer so she can make the biggest splash that she can when she answers of course.
He might be out of his two jobs by March! Then what will the Teabaggers do?
DeleteThat's gonna be one huge seat to fill. I bet the teabaggers will vote to count it as two.
DeleteI loved it! But as it was airing I commented to husband that heads would explode over it! They are so predictable!
ReplyDeleteNancy B in SC
I hope Coca-Cola paid for those hateful tweets just to stir up publicity. I hope those people aren't real. I hope.
ReplyDeleteThe best beating yesterday was not on the football field.
ReplyDeleteIt was the one that O'Reilly did on the Kenyan Muslim Marxist
Drink Pepsi.
LOL
DeleteDon't tell me a Palin fan is a racist. You do know that Sarah's husband and a couple of her kids have Native Anerican heritage, don't you?
DeleteDelusional.
Deletewasilly in the house.
ReplyDeleteThose few little words is what the haterz are up in arms about? Even Sarah Palin didn't have time for puerile comments about it.
ReplyDeleteConsidering how most of us came from a different country (when our family members my grandparents etc came thru ellis island) you all know that big statue in New York and why it was built The Statue of LIBERTY............. how can they make those stupid (IMO) comments. we all had a different language when our family member immigrated here SMH! MJ Stock-Matoza and no its not a spanish name its portuguese from my late husband whos family came here, mine came from england where did yours come from?
ReplyDeletePeople who voice their fear and anger over such a nice thing, are the ones who cause Americans to be universally hated across the globe.
ReplyDeleteMakes you feel as if you need to apply decals on your luggage that reads: WE'RE NOT ALL ASSHOLES, I PROMISE!
THAT is an excellent idea. I would totally buy decals, a t-shirt etc to wear when traveling. When I was traveling two years ago, more than one Black man said "please don't shoot me" when I approached to ask a question, once when I asked for a ride. I can't tell you how small I felt when confronted with the reality of our national persona.
DeleteTEXASMEL
all those #boycottcoke heads will explode when they discover that the CEO of Pepsi is an Indian woman.
ReplyDeleteI thought this commercial was brilliant! The tweets and the outrage? Not so much. The loudest complainers are usually the most ignorant. The same people who think this country is "exceptional" are the ones who hope their IQ's are marked on a curve.
ReplyDeleteThere IS no language called "American".
We all laugh, love and cry in the same language. I have a feeling the laughers far outnumber the criers over this commercial.
What a bunch of idiots. The world is laughing at the American right wing today.
ReplyDeletesigh. every day there's another controversy with this group of supposedly christian people. they attack the cookies, they attack the pop, the want everyone to be like them. i personally hope we as Americans stay diverse because i am Native American and i hope there are more people who side with me on this because if those crazies win the battle, we people of color and different cultures are lost. stay with us America. don't abandon our diversity.
ReplyDelete
